NHL Power Rankings - Oct 21, 2008

Welcome to Waldo's inaugural power rankings. Hopefully I can update my rankings every week. Thoughts, discussion, and debate are encouraged. The Wild are off to a strong start, but I want to see how they handle the injury issues against a stronger opponent before they get to be number one. That being said I'm probably being optimistic anyway.

  1. Canadiens
  2. Wild
  3. Sharks
  4. Sabres
  5. Oilers
  6. Devils
  7. Red Wings
  8. Blues
  9. Capitals
  10. Rangers
  11. Bruins
  12. Penguins
  13. Thrashers
  14. Hurricanes
  15. Canucks
  16. Panthers
  17. Senators
  18. Avalanche
  19. Islanders
  20. Blackhawks
  21. Predators
  22. Maple Leafs
  23. Kings
  24. Stars
  25. Blue Jackets
  26. Coyotes
  27. Flames
  28. Ducks
  29. Lightning
  30. Flyers

Next week I'll add thoughts to go along with the rankings.

I don't think that I could put the

Red Wings out of the top 5, and as hot as the WIld start has been, I would not put them higher then 5 yet in part because of the quality of the compatition so far. Florida, Tampa, Atlanta, and Boston. Thursday against Buffalo will be a real test for us. luckily it seems we are getting healthy at just the right time. so I would start with buffalo and Montrial, Sharks, Detroit and then us.

I'll Admit

I probably have a negative bias for Detroit due to my general disdain for that team. I imagine they’ll move up next week unless they tank in their next few games.

I agree with Thor. It’s too early to move Detroit down. They’re still the best team in the NHL, and while the Wild are off to a winning start, they’ve basically played the equivalent of the Gopher’s football non-conference schedule.

That being said, please make this a weekly feature, and I’ll push it to the front page every week!

Don't get me wrong

I like the power rankings even if I think it is too early to place us so high, or the wings so low. I don’t think I am ready to put the Montreal so high either. like the Wild they have played a fairly powderpuff schedule so far, Toronto, Florida, Philly and Pheonix.

Having sad all this, i do think they are a “for real” team and so belong near the top. Buffalo on the other hand has played Montreal, the Rangers, Boston and Vancouver, that is why they get my vote for #1.
