NOTES:

  • The Wild dropped into last place in the Northwest after losing 10 of 14 games (4-9-1) in December.
  • Pavel Datsyuk, who leads the Red Wings with 26 assists and 42 points, has eight goals and nine assists during a season-high nine-game point streak.
  • Detroit is 8-0-2 in 10 meetings with Minnesota since a 4-2 home loss on Jan. 3, 2006.
  • The Red Wings are 6-0-1 at Xcel Energy Center since the teams played to a 1-1 tie on Nov. 15, 2003.
  • Minnesota's defense is tied with East-leading Boston, allowing a league-low 84 goals.
  • Marian Gaborik was officially placed on the IR to make room for John Scott.
  • Marek Zidlicky, who has been ill the past few days, was back on the ice this morning.

Questions to Answer

  1. Will the return of the C to Mikko Koivu's sweater matter at all?
  2. Does Marian Gaborik's injury situation being identified help the team move on and get past it?
  3. Can they build on a nice showing against San Jose and get the new month started on the right foot?
  4. Do Lidstrom and Chelios play a bigger role in today's game than they did in the Winter Classic?
  5. With Gaborik going out, is there any way they can make a move?

I Dont care what anybody says

The state of Hockey song is the best theme song in all of sports

Concerning the "Can We Get any Value for Gaborik"

I Think Doug Risebrough needs to approach him and tell him hey..your Free Agent Value is Extremely Low…what would be best for you is to sign a 1 or 2 year deal with us so you can rebuild your value in the Free Agent Market.

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:12 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Might be possible

But Russo seems to think that neither side is even interested in talking.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:16 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you think Gaborik might be forced to though

I mean….hes going to get next to nothing in the free agent market after this surgery…he might as well try to build it back up so he can atleast get somewhere near the deal he wanted.

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:18 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If he's smart

He signs with someone for one year to prove himself. THis is a waste of a season. However, if he’s really smart, he fires his agent. Ron Salcer has cost Marian Gaborik a minimum of 60 million dollars. Had Gaborik signed in the offseason, he wouldn’t need to worry about the surgery and proving himself.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:23 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True.

Oh well..this just bites the dust..atleast we will have some money to sign free agents and not have to carry the burden of his contract.

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:26 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

While that’s the case, I don’t know if I trust this regime to make the right decision or develop the players in the right system.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:30 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wild are getting good chances....

Even Without Gaborik and Zidlicky out…

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:22 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

John Scott is making his debut tonight

22 year old Defensmen…Stands 6’8 without skates. DAMN

Horrible defense leads to Detroit goal for Samuelsson from Zetterberg.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:33 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pretty play

But easy to see what was going to happen. Someone forgot to take the trailing man.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:38 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wild back to giving up the first goal of the game and not scoring in the first period. I’m going to guess that the 12/31 game was a fluke

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:34 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Names of Potential Free Agent Signings this coming off season with Gaborik being gone and us having money

After we Lock up Backstrom and either Bergeron or Foster.

Miroslav Satan
Steven Reinprecht
Alex Tanguay
Saku Koivu
Erik Cole
Michael Cammalleri
Maxime Afhinigenov

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:36 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

People to dump

Bergeron
Brunette
Miettinen

I want the Sedins and nobody else.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:37 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yikes..thats everybody from our Free Agent class pretty much last year

but i agree on the Sedins.. Maybe Reunite the Koivu Brothers..Possibly Erik Cole..Satan and Afhinigenov.

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:39 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, it is

Frankly, I’m not sold on Nolan or Zidlicky either. I’d rather have Ryan Jones and Patrick O’Sullivan than Bergeron, Zidlicky, Brunette, Miettinen and Nolan.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:41 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah they Made alot of Stupid Trade Mistakes...

I’m not so Ticked about the Ryan Jones Trade because i think Zidlicky can contribute…Bruno is just Bruno…Miettinen..i’ll give him some time…Dont Like Bergeron Much and Owen Nolan is Owen Nolan..hes like almost 40..hes like a Gary Roberts Type guy..crafty Veteran….Trading Patrick O’Sullivan for Pavol Demitra was Inexcusable.

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:44 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Barren

The cupboard is bare. There is nothing in Houston that excites personnel directors. The Wild have nobody in the WJC. There is no young talent. Even the young talent that is with the big team is mediocre or at least needs time and latitude to get better. Sheppard, Gillies, Pouliot and Clutterbuck aren’t the offensive talents that this team needs to have in order to be successful.

They need offensive talent. They’re almost better off tanking.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:49 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed...

i still Think Gillies has a bright future….Pouliot cant Learn anything…and Clutterbuck is only a Grinder…we have too many of thoughs…Maybe Tyler Cuma can develop into something nice…i do for one..Like Krys Kolanos

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:52 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I like Kolanos too, but he’s not exactly young, nor is Scott. Irmen has been a failure. Pouliot has potential, but not able to improve yet. Sheppard has a way to go offensively.

Cuma is a d-man, so that’s not going to be a big boon either.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kolanos

Kolanos is a journeyman who has played for about half the teams in the NHL. If he were a baseball player, he’d be described as a AAAA player. Great in the minors, can’t quite hack it in the pros.

by HockeyJoe on Jan 3, 2009 7:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

He’s like Jeff Taffe or Erik Westrum.

The guy on the other team that Minnesota should look into, if they’re looking for a guy to fit Lemaire’s mold, is Hudler.

by HockeyJoe on Jan 3, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thats if Lemaire is even Coaching Next year

Theres Been Speculation of Letting Him go in the off-season for the past two years.

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 7:53 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If

If that happens, does Risebrough keep his job? Those two have been working hand in hand since the start.

by HockeyJoe on Jan 3, 2009 7:55 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Takeover

It will be Ramsey’s team if Lemaire walks and it won’t affect Risebrough.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:56 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jiri Hudler?

I’d take Hudler, but I’d trade my left nut for the Sedins.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 7:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That'll happen

When Minnesota gives up every first round pick until 2020.

by HockeyJoe on Jan 3, 2009 7:57 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah yeah

Why you gotta kill my dreams?

Sure Goal…Whoever that was had Osgood Beat

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 8:13 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wild Powerplay

Shut up Clutterbuck…Zetterberg would murder you

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 8:26 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Now we have a 5 on 3 power play

Detroit Guy just shoots in out of play..not touched by a wild player..Nice Delay of Game

Owen Nolan with the goal on the deflection and rebound. Great play by the old man. We’re back at full strength.

WILD GOAL!!!! Antti Miettinen with a great steak and creates his own goal. 2-1 Wild.

Canada-Russia

Canada ties the game at 5-5 with 5 seconds left.

by HockeyJoe on Jan 3, 2009 8:57 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

DAMNIT

I Really Want to see Canada Lose

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 8:58 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They were really close. Russian defenseman blocked a shot, tried to smother the puck, lost it, and Jordan Eberle got it slipped it by to tie it.

Ridiculous.

by HockeyJoe on Jan 3, 2009 8:58 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ouch

Striiiiiiike one Mikko.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:00 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Waved off for played with a high stick. SHould’ve been waved off for Franzen standing in the crease after interfering with Harding

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:13 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is taking a long time. It shouldn’t have taken this long at all

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:15 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They are Counting that Goal!!!!!!!!

You Gotta Be Kidding Me…..Who From Detroit Made the Ref Drop Trow in the Penalty Box and Blew Him…You Gotta Be insane to count that.

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 9:17 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ahh

But it’s a goal for Hockey Town! Detroit is the darling of the West.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:18 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This game is going to get out of hand. Detroit has been given a gift and will win 4-2 now

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:18 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jesus, we’re already bailing out their industry, now we need to bailout their hockey team too? SCREW DETROIT>

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:19 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Greenlay the homer is finally right. The Wild have played a great game tonight and will get screwed out of a win, & I’m loathe to blame refs

Looks like the wild are going for the shootout...

who do we have other than Mikko Koivu thats good in the shootout…we lost Gaborik to Injury and Rolston’s Slapper to Free Agency

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:39 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Red Wings win. That was an absolute gift buy Toronto. Detroit did not earn the 2 points tonight.

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:41 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thats Bullshit....

Fuck those Refs…Fuck Bettman for even hiring them.

by Tony_O on Jan 3, 2009 9:42 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's not the refs

It’s Toronto. The refs on the ice, staring at the play from 5 feet away, made the right call

by nathaneide on Jan 3, 2009 9:46 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Horrible loss for the Wild. Absolute screw job. The “goal” was at least 4" above the crossbarm and Toronto gifted 2 pts to the Red Wings
