Because Speculation is Fun
NHL Live just reported that Saku Koivu has decided (was forced?) to leave the Montreal Canadiens. He will not re-sign with them, and Alex Tanguay will take over as the captain of the Habs.
Does this mean he is headed for Saint Paul to finish out his career with little brother Mikko?
Do Wild fans still want him around, what with the promised excitement of fast-paced action coming next season?
Speak up Wild fans. What say you? Do you want Saku on the squad?

I would love to see him
finnish (see what I did there? Finnish?) his Career here, but not at almost 5 mil/year. if he’ll sign for 3-4 mil for 2-3 years in order to play with his kid brother, then I would be all for it. I just don’t think that at his age we should pay him more then PMB for the same level of production.

Ah yes
But PMB is likely going bye bye. That’s my bet anyways. Him, Shep, and Harding. Just to start with.

While it was a handshake deal
with the previouse GM, we can’t trade PMB until after this season. and while Fletcher could disregard this handshake deal since he didn’t make it, I think that that could/would have a diliterioius affect on future contract negotiations with players. Also, PMB wants to play here, he likes playing for Minn, that is a good player to have on the roster. and while he may have underperformed last year, the team as a whole underperformed, while his 46 points was not that mutch lower then the elder Koivu’s 50 (same number of goals, +4 assists).
PMB is one of the few players on this roster that can create for other players. I wouldn’t be so quick to dump on him even with out the handshake “no trade” clause.

Yes
I think he has earned it; he seems like he would be a good guy to have around. But, like Thor said, for an affordable price. I would hope that with his brother on the team, something respectable to all parties involved could be reached.
Wait, Tanguay replaces Koivu as Captain of Les Habs?
The same Alex Tanguay that the media (and fans) in Montreal suggested he faked an injury to sit out part fo the Habs/B’s series?
Other reports are saying it was Kovalev offered the team captaincy.
Sorry to hijack the thread and start Habbing all over the place. Just seems like a contradiction to suggest Tanguay would be offered the “C”

Of course
like Koivu, Tanguay and Kovalev are UFA, meaning you cant really offer either of them the Captency until one or both are resigned. the Habs are in a kind of bind this offseason with all their UFA’s

might as well
he would make a really good 2nd or 3rd line center. Much improvement over Sheppard, and Belanger.
