Hating Hockey Hell
I believe I speak for many Wild fans when I say that I feel as though I am trapped in hockey hell right now. The playoffs are in full swing, with some amazing match ups, and the Wild are searching for a new GM to lead us all into the second ring of Dante's inferno. At the same time, I can't seem to find a fiber of my body that cares about it. Any of it.
If you have read past posts by me, you will know that I am a huge hockey fan. I eat it, breathe it, sleep with it, and if I could mate with it and have little Buddha Hockeys, I would. Right now though, I can;t seem to muster up interest.
It is hot outside, that is the first problem. I know, 69 degrees isn't hot to most people, but good lord, how the hell am I supposed to find outdoor ice at 68 degrees? I really should move to Alaska or northern Canada. For now, though, I am stuck here in the hot, so I will leave my freezer open and rub ice on my head.
Second problem is the tedium. When you read as many blogs and sites as I do, you come to find that they all like to report the major stories. It gets tedious at times, but they all need to cover the news for those people who are only getting their news from the one source. With the playoffs in round two, there are fewer games to focus on, and there are now fifty game recaps a day for each game. I can't even muster the strength to read Puck Daddy right now, because most of his stuff is about the same game I just read fifteen other people's take on. (Sorry Wysh, but I'll be back, I promise.)
The third problem, and this may get me in trouble, is the Pittsburgh / Washington series. Not for the same reasons everyone else seems to have an issue with this match up. I could care less that these two teams get more media coverage than the rest of the league put together. They should. They have the three best players in the game between them. No, I have an issue with this because I have to listen to the respective teams fans whine and complain about each other.
Ovechkin is a showoff, Crosby is a cry baby, and Malkin is not visible enough. Cry me a freakin' river people. This is likely to be the best playoff hockey we have seen in years, and the blogs and sites covering it make it sound like an episode of "Real House Wives of Southern Saskatchewan." Is it not possible for the national media to buy into the bickering between the two fan bases and cover the game in a way the rest of us can stomach? Please?
Problem four. The GM search. Everyone has a take, which I appreciate, since I have no idea who most of these guys are. However, when I hear people on NHL Live call in and comment on it, and they have no idea where Minnesota is, let alone what the Wild need, it bothers me.
The second part of problem four is that no matter who Leipold picks, Wild fans will immediately do one of two things: attack the choice as the worst thing that has ever happened in team history, or laud the incoming GM as a savior with dreams of Sugar Plums dancing around the Stanley Cup in their heads.
I can't seem to buy into the hype just yet. Maybe it's the weather, the fact that the season was so disappointing, the swine flu, or maybe it's something else. Whatever it is, I sure I hope it passes soon. I feel like a kid who got his candy bar taken away and has to sit and watch the thug eat it now too.

Yeah
That sounds about right, except that I can’t stop watching any Caps games. I absolutely love watching Ovi and the Caps play.

It's all you.
I am a Wild fan and season ticket holder, but man I still love the Stanley Cup Playoffs, withor without the Wild. Always have. Yeah I would love to have had playoff hockey here again this year. But I like Ice cream too but I really like it it with a ton of toppings on it. that’s how I view the playoffs, if the wild are not in it’s at the very least it’s a premium chocolate, if they were in, you could add a topping for every game or round they advanced, but that said I still like premium chocolate.
The SJ/Ducks series was a little bit of a let down, but, even though I hate the Ducks, I really enjoy watching them beat the snot out of the Wings. I wanted to see CalGary advance, just an Iginla respect thing, but love watching the intensity developing between the BlackHacks and Vancouver, and even better is that Pav is injured, that prick. The Pit/Was series is great because I believe Was and Ovie are the much better team, but believe the league is “pushing” for Pitt and nudging the officiating that way as well, can the Caps overcome that? Bos/Car have not had much chance to watch that one, but the Devils/Canes series was incredible, you had better not changed the channel on that one. The drama and storylines are more intense than any other in sports. What happens when you take a physically dominating team like Anaheim and pit them against the most extremely talented team like Detroit for not one game, but two weeks of strike and counterstrike? I lean towards might over flight, but I can’t say with any conviction…..Stay tuned. THIS IS THE GREATEST DRAMA IN ALL OF SPORTS!!!!
As far as the home team’s GM search, as a pretty big hockey fan, I have no idea, just like you. I lean towards Stan Bowman, but with no real insight, other than name recognition, pedigree and knowing how the Hacks have done since he has been there. But to be honest, I don’t know what part he has played in that recent success. Even more important is that, I don’t believe Leo can even aproach him until Chicago bows out and unless Bob Luango really stiffens up, that could be another month or more.
But honestly man, just enjoy the playoffs, because there aint anything that even comes close.
69 degrees
Pansy.
That said, I think everyone needs a break after the season whether we have to force it on ourselves or whether we collapse in a heap and sleep for 3 days when our team loses out of the playoffs (which is exactly what I plan to do). Don’t sweat it. I think all of us who write about it, especially, get some mental fatigue around it.
I can’t really get into the NHL playoffs either. The first game I’ve gotten into was that double hat trick Caps/Pens game the other day.
A reader emailed me yesterday to ask what I thought about GM search and I honestly don’t have an answer. Kinda vague notions one way or another, but that’s all. Nothing I could stand behind with any confidence.
With the Aeros
being so damn exciting, it’s hard to buy into the NHL playoffs the same way I normally would. That Corey Locke goal last night was somethin else.
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! HOW can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!

Hey...
I admit that I am a pansy when it comes to heat. I hate it when it gets above 32. Like I said, I should live in Alaska, or Canada.
With your Aeros doing so well, I can’t imagine the NHL would be much of a draw for you. I hope they go far. Calder cup rather than a Calder trophy? Would that be acceptable?

I'm fully behind Fletcher
I’m on board. Fresh, new, offensive. If they’re going to be mediocre, they might as well be fun.

Not sure what it is
But I have a feeling it is going to be Fletcher. Of course, since I had that feeling it will likely be anyone but Fletcher.

Just play
Playing is better than watching anyways. And if nothing else, it helps keep that excitement going for the playoffs. Unless Vancouver and Anaheim win. Then I’ll just watch the east and pray for the east to win the cup whoever it is. I can’t stand either of those teams.
Oh...
Also, if Anaheim and Vancouver go to the finals I am going to get back into this big. Because if those are my choices to represent the West, then I am going to become a HUGE fan of whoever comes out of the East.
Ugh… Nucks or Ducks. Makes me sick just thinking about it.
