Sykora Assigned to Houston

Just got this from the Wild:

MINNESOTA WILD ASSIGNS PETR SYKORA TO AHL HOUSTON

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club assigned right wing Petr Sykora (PEE-tuhr, sih-KOH-ra) to the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Sykora, 33 (11/19/76), recorded three points (2-1=3) in 14 games for the Wild this season. Sykora has posted 677 points (302-375=677) and 415 penalty minutes in 935 NHL games with New Jersey, Anaheim, the New York Rangers, Edmonton, Pittsburgh and Minnesota.

Have to admit, when I saw the headline it was cut off, and I figured they assigned Earl. Nope.

Wow.

I'm really surprised that Fletcher couldn't swing a deal with somebody for Sykora

I don’t think his contract would be too much..only $1.6 million…the question I have..was Fletcher asking too much?

How can you ask too much when the guy was on waivers? A 7th round pick would have been better than this.

In other words… I hope he wasn’t asking for too much.

Some equipment or a bag of pucks would have been better than this

I heard the Wild lost some equipment in a fire or something last month ;-p’’’

I guess they can at least stop paying him now

Which frees up cash and cap room—however minimal. At least in theory—I’m not aware of any other contractual/legal/NHL rules obligations, etc…

How will this affect other deals down the road?

There are already a number of players who don’t want to come here, I can’t see this helping.

Agreed. This can’t be good. Unless of course, Sykora is willing to tell other players that Fletcher worked with him, rather than forcing the decision on him…
