NHL Guardians Collection Set to Launch: Your Opinion Wanted

Back in October, the NHL announced a partnership with Stan Lee to create a company called Guardian Media, LLC. This partnership was created to present a line of graphic novels (read: comic books) with 30 "Guardians", each of which drew its origins from the 30 NHL franchises.
According to the press release, the story lines would take place in a "non-hockey" world, but would draw on elements of the game we all know and love. Not much else was released with this cryptic introduction. The last bit of information was that the line of superheroes would launch during the All Star Game. That process has begun, and the people behind the Guardians want your participation.
Make the jump for more.
I will be honest. I do not know the level of interest this will garner with the Hockey Wilderness community. We have some gamers, but no one has mentioned much of a love affair with comic books. Since it is NHL related, we figured we would present the information to you and let the chips fall where they may. Please. let us know in the comments if there is further interest in this project or not.
As stated before the jump, the process to roll out the characters has begun. This takes place in a Facebook based voting campaign, creating a face-off between two NHL teams to decide which team's character gets released first. For example, the Wild are currently pitted against the Dallas Stars:

As you can see from the picture, the winner of this matchup will be revealed on January 9, 2011. With there being little drummed up hype about this as of yet, the Wild hold a strong lead. If you have a Facebook account, you can vote, but be warned, it is an application, not just a "stop by and vote" site. You will have to give permissions, which is standard with any Facebook App.
Once inside the app, you can see the outline of each of the NHL teams' character, as well as the character's name, and a brief description of each. For example, The Minnesota Wild are represented by "The Wild," which appears to be the same mish-mash of Wild beasts that the logo is.
Rotating around the outside ring puts you into each of the different match-ups. You can vote in each once per day, and you can "multiply" your vote by further the social media campaign and publishing either to Twitter or to your Facebook wall.
The also have some video to tease you with:
I will admit, I am curious about the project, mostly in a "It's hockey related, so it better be cool and not be patronizing" kind of way. I am guessing there are some comic book lovers out there who will think this is very cool, and some hockey fans who will think it is pretty cool. I am concerned a bit about taking two rather niche markets, and combining them into an uber-niche market.
I do not know how many hard core hockey fans are reading comic books, and I do not know how many comic book fans are going to tune in to the Wild on a regular basis. I could be very, very wrong, and thus this post. We want to know what the level of interest is here. Please. express your thoughts below. Is this something you could get into, or are there other feelings out there?
I am more than willing to give it a chance, as Stan Lee is an absolute genius when it comes to making superheroes, and he isn't going to get involved with something he figures is a failure of an idea. If he thinks there is a market for this, I guarantee there is a market for this. If it were only a Gary Bettman brainchild, I would laugh it out the door. However, with Lee involved, the execution will be there. Let's just hope the market is.
In full disclosure, we are in conversation with the PR firm handling the Guardian Project to get a give-away going. We do not know what that might be, or what it might entail yet. Could depend on what your reaction is to this post. If there is interest, perhaps we get something cool to give away, if the reaction is cold, we may simply pack it up and move on.
So, Wilderness... what say you? Great idea? Total bust? Would you buy a few issues and give it a chance?

Hi my name is Monica and I read comics...
Shocking I know. But I am also worried about how the transition will work. My fear is making a mockery of the game; but I really don’t think the NHL nor Stan Lee would do that – so pushing that fear aside…
I don’t think it will be as bad as the Disney cartoon ducks fighting crime with hockey sticks was. (Don’t act like you don’t know what I am talking about). In every market there are those that will read comics. Geekdom is everywhere and who knows maybe it will bridge a gap and bring in more fans. That’s the hope right?
As a comicbook reader (X-men is my weakness and I have been known to visit Comic Cons… again a shocker to all I am sure) I am excited to see each of the Guardians released.
Being a former girl gamer.
I’ve been a gamer in the past, probably still would be if there were enough hours in the day. I like this idea but I also haven’t read a comic book in 13 years, I’m willing to give the idea a chance so much I already voted. Couldn’t hurt that bad right?
Geeks and Nerds shall prevail!
According to my friends: I talk about hockey way too much.
This could either garner a cult following or be a complete bust.
Doesn’t 30 superheroes seem excessive? I think that’s bigger than the Justice League! And will this line of thinking really bring people into the game of hockey? I don’t think so.
It’s a cool idea and I’m interested to see the outcome, but I don’t think this will increase the popularity or exposure of the NHL in the US.

There are hundreds of X-Men (Heros and Villians)
Never under estimate the power of geeks and nerds the world over to want to see the characters come to life:
Example: Spiderman is now cartoons, action toys, movies and on broadway (well kind of)
How many times to do see people dress up for movies or book releases because of characters? Check out a Comic or Anime Con – wanting to believe in these characters as true beings and then actually having the essence of these beings be these teams could fordge very powerful connections within the niche market.
Good point about X-men! And I’m not dissing on the comic fan, trust me! I’ve been big on Batman since I was old enough to read (or look at pictures for that matter).
I think we’re looking at different aspects of this campaign of sorts. Through a broad view I don’t see this as being the step the NHL needs to take to gain exposure. I love the creativity and the willingness of the NHL to step out of the box, but I don’t think this is going to separate the NHL in a big way. In a more narrow view (the niche market), I’m sure this will be a hit. How far they take it is anyone’s guess!

Well.....
I’ve never been big on comic books, but I’m a gamer and geek at heart. If the Wild’s super hero was a Dragon, I would definitely buy every copy. I’m still curious and open-minded enough to want to check it out. I think there might be some Hope.

Other Match-Up Posters
Have you seen the other posters for each match-up? It’s a pretty good preview of what each “protector” will look like:
