Meet Casey Wellman

Russo broke the story today that the Minnesota Wild will sign UMass sophomore forward Casey Wellman to a two-year, $1.8 million contract. You can read all of the details in BR's post below or Russo's blog.

One big thing about Wellman is that he plays center. The Wild aren't exactly overflowing with centers. This gives Wellman a lot greater of an opportunity to come to the team and get more of a chance. At this point in the season, might as well see what the guy can do at the NHL level.

But really, who is Casey Wellman...

Star-divide

There's not a whole lot of information out there yet on Wellman past his stats, but here's a briefing on what we do know about the Wild's latest signing. Study up and get to know him a bit before his debut.

Good to see we’re getting a young center with a ton of upside. Th

This seems okay. I mean, I have LOVED college hockey for a long time and will be the first to defend what a high level of play NCAA-D1 actually is, so any chance a college player gets to play in the NHL is great with me. It is also great to see the new management actually doing something in this arena.

I’m kind of concerned about him leaving with 2 years of eligibility remaining, but those concerns can be alieviated if it works out for the Wild.

Let's Go Wild!

I think...

part of that is that he’s already 22, as he played juniors before getting to college. If you’ve just posted a great year in college, haven’t been drafted by a team but have serious hopes of playing in the pros, you take your chance when your stock is at the highest. What if he went back to college next year and tore some knee ligaments next year? That could end his best shot. 22… one of the ncaa scoring leaders, a lot of interested teams, a shot to play pro this year? I completely understand that.

maybe he should take Sheps roster spot and they should send Shep to college to play for a couple years. Maybe he’ll learn how to score a goal.

I would suggest...

He could work on learning how to shot a puck. I know shep… I know. Shooting are for those guys who didn’t start playing until they were 4.
