The Hockey Wilderness 2010 NHL Trade Deadline Thread
Here you are, Wilderness readers, a place to join together and discuss all of the happenings of the day. I will update with trades as they happen.
Check out a nice preview of the Western Conference at the deadline by FanHouse's Bruce Ciskie.
For now, a few questions to discuss:
- Do the Wild make some moves, and if so, who and for what?
- Is this the last we've seen of Owen Nolan and Eric Belanger in Iron Range Red?
- Will Brian Burke add truculence?
- With Ilya Kovalchuk already in NJ, are there any blockbusters out there?
- Does Eklund's site crash due to "too much traffic" again this year? (FYI, I don't really care, I just wanted to make fun of him, and this question allows me to do so.)
- Will CapGeek.com survive the day?
- Will Pierre McGuire annoy me so much that I won't be able to watch anymore?
Here we go, trade deadline, 2010. Enjoy.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.
With GMs debating, and fans salivating.
And I’m drinking beer!!!!!!!!
It’s the most wonderful time ….. of the year!!!

I wish
Last year I had the day off. I made an error by not taking it off this year.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
My predictions
Owen Nolan will be a Shark.
Eric Belanger will be in the East
The Wild will pick up nothing but picks. No young talent, just picks
Guillaume Latendresse will not sign an extension today (no matter how much we want it)
Pierre McGuire will french kiss Dutchy because he speaks so damn close to his face
I will make at least three “Dany Heatley is a murderer” comments

I can't help it
It’s just so easy, kinda like driving your Ferrari into a tree and getting away with killing someone.

Good call

Man I love being right
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Oh Nate...
so much Dany hate.
I agree with most everything…except the Nolan thing. I know may be biased, as Owen in my wife’s Wild boyfriend, but, I really think news, if any, regarding him, would be a re-signing.
In Owen’s heart, he knows that San Jose has too much history losing in the playoffs.
I'd like to see Nolan stay
But he’s all but packed.

From Russo's post
OK, on to Owen Nolan. There was a point today, and the last few days actually, where I was convinced he’d be traded. Teams have shown interest.
But as of now, unless there’s a too-good-to-pass-up-offer, I think he’s staying. Here’s the deal from the best that I can decifer: Out of courtesy for Nolan and what he’s accomplished in his career and how he’s playing this season, Chuck Fletcher met with Nolan on Monday to ask if he’d want to be traded to a contender.
The Wild wants to keep him, but Nolan’s never won a Stanley Cup. It sounds like Nolan actually told the Wild he wants to try to help the Wild make what appears to be an insurmountable climb up this playoff hill.
"He’s a loyal guy," said Fletcher, but refusing to divulge the full extent of their conversation.
So right now I think he’s staying.
Nobody knows Fletcher well enough (though Russo says that he’s a straight-forward guy), but how much of this could be conjecture to keep people off-guard? I have no idea, but I think you have to see what you can get for Nolan. I love the guy, but this team NEEDS young talent.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Washington wants ....
A veteran 2-way forward with playoff experience. Hmm, now that would be a fit for Nolan.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Robbie Earl Recalled
It’s a Twins Trade!
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
From Russo
Robbie Earl recalled in case #mnwild trade a player today; Wild source says he’ll be returned if no trade
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
I am enjoying the twitter exchange about Russo saying “Earl to Calgary.” Russo has a sick sense of humor.
That was funniy
And would’ve been better had Billy Rob not tweeted it first.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Not Wild related (not really, anyway)....
This will please Boston.

Wouldn't be a trade deadline without Derek Morris
Back to Phoenix? WTF?
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
HA!
Andy Sutton gets a second and Derek Morris gets a 4th. Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
And it has happened
Skoula to New Jersey.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
And Jacques looks deep into his eyes and says “I wish I knew how to quit you”.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
I love this move. For them, I mean. I hated to see them separated for long. The kids have been stressed out, Skoula just cries all the time. The house seemed so empty.
RT @DownGoesBrown:
Reports say the Leafs will get a fifth for Skoula. No word yet what on whether it’s whiskey or scotch.

Interesting

Seidenberg and Bartowski from Fla for Craig Weller, Byron Bitz and a 2nd round pick.

Question...
What the fuck is this?

Or this?

Please, Wilderness readers. Do not, under any circumstances, but these items. I will reach through the computer and slap you.
is my screen malfunctioning?
Or are those hats actually neon?

Ouch
I bet those bills don’t bend either.

Depends

Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
I promise I will not but those items.
I shouldn’t make fun of you for this though, because 90% of my posts contain similar spelling errors.
I’ve already told friends, family, coworkers, etc that I would disown them if they ever bought a pink jersey to be worn by anyone over the age of 9.
I actually do have that hat in a respectable color scheme though.

Damn
Edmonton claims Ryan Jones
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
-I really Nolan stays. I like this team having a grizzled old SOB who’s been there, done that, and called his shot. Every team needs a graybeard, and he fits with the .org and the fans. And if that blurb from Russo is true, that’s the mark of a great man.
-Belanger I’m ambival…ambivel….I’m on the fence.
-Boogie, again see my poem regarding him. If Fletch bids adieu, my foot will bid bonjour to his balls. Yeah we have Scott, and he’s a great big SOB, but he doesn’t instill the fear that #24 does. Not yet anyways.
-Those hats are f’ing ugly. And I’m so g-d sick of this pink craze it makes me see Iron Range Red.
Er, “I really hope”.
Don’t judge, I’m on 3 hours sleep.

Fuck
Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter to Avs for Wojtek Wolski is official.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
In the "Who Cares" bin
Detroit sends Kris Newbury to the Rangers for Jordan Owens.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Yep
Surprising, considering how much time the GMs had to negotiate during the Olympics.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Breakdown on the Avs move
Seems like two teams swapping guys who are underperforming. Not sure why the Yotes needed to add Porter to the mix, but I think this helps Colorado much more than Phoenix. Mueller is big and is still very young, Porter showed great poise and touch at Michigan.
I think this could hurt the Wild, in that Colorado adds more young talent and a guy in Mueller who is going to play with a chip on his shoulder. Same with Wolski. He has flamed out the past 18 months, but has proven he can score. I see him as a spark for Phoenix as they drive into the playoffs.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
By the way
Scott Walker only returned a 7th rounder vs. Andy Sutton’s 2nd? What the hell is going on in the Eastern Conference?
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Speaking of former Wild players on Long Island
Looks like Richard Park is about to be moved. If he gets a second rounder, I’m going to eat my hat.

I have a trade to announce
Vancouver sends Mathieu Schneider to Phoenix. No work on who comes back.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Phoenix
These past two deadlines have been hot for the Coyotes. Last season they added young talent, this season they’re looking to make a run. I absolutely LOVE the way they’ve set themselves up.
I’m guessing they’ll be pairing Schneider with Morris. Have to like the potential of that pairing.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Yeah
I love the NHL comment “All of their transactions fit within the payroll budget they have been provided”

Jeff Halpern to the Kings from Tampa
Huh, this one’s great for LA.

Here we go
Eric Belanger to Washington for a 2nd rounder. Nice.

Wonder if anyone
Will force the Wild’s resolve with a very good offer on Nolan. It seems, based on Russo’s tweets, that the team is set on hanging on to him.
I sure hope that pays dividends this summer. Would suck to have him hang around and then have him leave July 1 for nothing. Real trust going on between the two sides with this.
indeed
It’ll be interesting to see how that unfolds.

Now he can back up Kipper
Ironic because I believe Kiprusoff was moved to Calgary partially to free up room with Sharks for Toskala.

There has to be more to that trade. Why would you give up a 535k cap hit backup goaltender for a $4 mil cap hit backup goaltender?
Because it's Calgary
And Sutter has to fuck it up every season somehow.

Raffi Torres from Columbus to Buffalo

NHL Draft
How does slotting in the draft work for playoff teams? Are they slotted by their regular season record or on their dismissal from the playoffs?
balanger trade
we got a 2nd round pick for a guy who was gone ne way after this season but im wondering how many mins does he average a game and who will be picking up those mins

From Wild via Twitter
Chuck Kobasew in the lineup. James Sheppard will play center tonight. Todd Richards expects Andrew Ebbett to see more ice time too.
Here's what I'm thinking for tonight
Andrew Brunette – Mikko Koivu – Antti Miettinen
Owen Nolan – Kyle Brodziak – Cal Clutterbuck
Guillaume Latendresse – Andrew Ebbett – Martin Havlat
Robbie Earl – James Sheppard – Derek Boogaard
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
That's my one issue
I know they want to get Ebbett more time, but moving him up to the second seems a bit much. I would imagine we’ll see Ebbett and Brodziak swapping linemates regularly.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
Clarke MacArthur to Atlanta for a 3rd and 4th

Yeah but where?
Let me guess …. Calgary? :)
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
If you want to make fun of an idiot
I had a little run in with this guy on the Wild’s Facebook page lol
Nick Goers
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! and @ Goken… I would take a 4th line college kid over PMB any day of the week! Him and Shepp’s are in the same boat sinking together…
Terry Goken
@Goers Im pretty sure if PMB was healthy he would have a little more than 2 goals 3 assists and a -8 in 44 games, JUST SAYIN. You cannot compare anyone to Shepp as far as letdowns go. Just because a player is hurt doesn’t mean he is worthless. So i guess you want to get rid of Kobasew, and Stoner too because they can’t play either? Get real man
Nick Goers
@ Goken… The Stoner extension is not exciting, not much of a player, similar to boogie! Kobasew actually has some skill to be playing in the league…
Terry Goken
@Goers, have you even seen Stoner play?! 2 goals 2 assists in the 8 games he’s played. He is the future stud defenseman for the team
Nick Goers
@ Goken… He’s nothing exciting to watch!
Terry Goken
@Goers. He hits, he fights, he scores, he has a half-rink pass to give Havlat a breakaway (which he scored on), and plays solidly defensively (plus one, the only wild player besides Robbie Earl to have an overall plus) what more do you want?
And then he went off about fighting me and since he played college hockey…he knows how to fight
What a joke. Sorry that this is way off topic but I thought it was funny
Oh yeah
And after reading the comments on the trade deadline thread I have learned three things
1. People want to trade Shepp Backs Nolan Burns Koivu Boogy Havlat AND Harding for either Crosby, Ovechkin, Parise, one of the Sedins, or Saku Koivu
2. If you play college hockey it makes you an expert in player analysis
3. People are EXTREMELY dumb

I didn’t hear even moderate rumors of Nolan being traded, beyond the normal speculation that follows a soon to be UFA. I can’t imagine why a playoff team wouldn’t want him. Is it possible they plan to resign him?
