The Hockey Wilderness 2010 NHL Trade Deadline Thread

Here you are, Wilderness readers, a place to join together and discuss all of the happenings of the day. I will update with trades as they happen.

Check out a nice preview of the Western Conference at the deadline by FanHouse's Bruce Ciskie.

For now, a few questions to discuss:

  1. Do the Wild make some moves, and if so, who and for what?
  2. Is this the last we've seen of Owen Nolan and Eric Belanger in Iron Range Red?
  3. Will Brian Burke add truculence?
  4. With Ilya Kovalchuk already in NJ, are there any blockbusters out there?
  5. Does Eklund's site crash due to "too much traffic" again this year? (FYI, I don't really care, I just wanted to make fun of him, and this question allows me to do so.)
  6. Will CapGeek.com survive the day?
  7. Will Pierre McGuire annoy me so much that I won't be able to watch anymore?

Here we go, trade deadline, 2010. Enjoy.

TRADES:

Derek Morris traded to Phoenix Coyotes from Boston Bruins for a 4th round pick in 2011. (9:32 am)

My predictions

Owen Nolan will be a Shark.
Eric Belanger will be in the East
The Wild will pick up nothing but picks. No young talent, just picks
Guillaume Latendresse will not sign an extension today (no matter how much we want it)
Pierre McGuire will french kiss Dutchy because he speaks so damn close to his face
I will make at least three “Dany Heatley is a murderer” comments

Every Pierre McGuire pairing goes the same way.. it’s just awkward. It’s disturbing to watch the NHL on NBC with him doing the commentary segments for that reason.

I will go against your predictions and say Nolan stays put though.

Oh Nate...

so much Dany hate.

I agree with most everything…except the Nolan thing. I know may be biased, as Owen in my wife’s Wild boyfriend, but, I really think news, if any, regarding him, would be a re-signing.

In Owen’s heart, he knows that San Jose has too much history losing in the playoffs.

You are going against Russo? How dare, thee.

by BReynolds on Mar 3, 2010 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

From Russo's post

In today’s blog

OK, on to Owen Nolan. There was a point today, and the last few days actually, where I was convinced he’d be traded. Teams have shown interest.
But as of now, unless there’s a too-good-to-pass-up-offer, I think he’s staying. Here’s the deal from the best that I can decifer: Out of courtesy for Nolan and what he’s accomplished in his career and how he’s playing this season, Chuck Fletcher met with Nolan on Monday to ask if he’d want to be traded to a contender.
The Wild wants to keep him, but Nolan’s never won a Stanley Cup. It sounds like Nolan actually told the Wild he wants to try to help the Wild make what appears to be an insurmountable climb up this playoff hill.
"He’s a loyal guy," said Fletcher, but refusing to divulge the full extent of their conversation.
So right now I think he’s staying.

Nobody knows Fletcher well enough (though Russo says that he’s a straight-forward guy), but how much of this could be conjecture to keep people off-guard? I have no idea, but I think you have to see what you can get for Nolan. I love the guy, but this team NEEDS young talent.

by nathaneide on Mar 3, 2010 9:01 AM CST up reply actions

What/who is on the table that’s worth trading Nolan for? For some reason I just don’t see us trading Nolan for a 2nd round pick.

by SpaethCo on Mar 3, 2010 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

The team needs young talent, and Nolan should be on a contender. However, I can see Nolan saying to him, “I want to be here.” and meaning it. How do you trade him if he does that? The warm fuzzies would be enough for me.

by BReynolds on Mar 3, 2010 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

My first thought was that his comments were out there to drive up the price. GM Translator 3000 says, “We won’t settle for what we’ve been offered, so you better up the ante.”

-I really Nolan stays. I like this team having a grizzled old SOB who’s been there, done that, and called his shot. Every team needs a graybeard, and he fits with the .org and the fans. And if that blurb from Russo is true, that’s the mark of a great man.

-Belanger I’m ambival…ambivel….I’m on the fence.

-Boogie, again see my poem regarding him. If Fletch bids adieu, my foot will bid bonjour to his balls. Yeah we have Scott, and he’s a great big SOB, but he doesn’t instill the fear that #24 does. Not yet anyways.

Breakdown on the Avs move

Seems like two teams swapping guys who are underperforming. Not sure why the Yotes needed to add Porter to the mix, but I think this helps Colorado much more than Phoenix. Mueller is big and is still very young, Porter showed great poise and touch at Michigan.

I think this could hurt the Wild, in that Colorado adds more young talent and a guy in Mueller who is going to play with a chip on his shoulder. Same with Wolski. He has flamed out the past 18 months, but has proven he can score. I see him as a spark for Phoenix as they drive into the playoffs.

Nick Goers
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! and @ Goken… I would take a 4th line college kid over PMB any day of the week! Him and Shepp’s are in the same boat sinking together…

Terry Goken
@Goers Im pretty sure if PMB was healthy he would have a little more than 2 goals 3 assists and a -8 in 44 games, JUST SAYIN. You cannot compare anyone to Shepp as far as letdowns go. Just because a player is hurt doesn’t mean he is worthless. So i guess you want to get rid of Kobasew, and Stoner too because they can’t play either? Get real man

Nick Goers
@ Goken… The Stoner extension is not exciting, not much of a player, similar to boogie! Kobasew actually has some skill to be playing in the league…

Terry Goken
@Goers, have you even seen Stoner play?! 2 goals 2 assists in the 8 games he’s played. He is the future stud defenseman for the team

Nick Goers
@ Goken… He’s nothing exciting to watch!

Terry Goken
@Goers. He hits, he fights, he scores, he has a half-rink pass to give Havlat a breakaway (which he scored on), and plays solidly defensively (plus one, the only wild player besides Robbie Earl to have an overall plus) what more do you want?

And then he went off about fighting me and since he played college hockey…he knows how to fight

What a joke. Sorry that this is way off topic but I thought it was funny

by Goken17 on Mar 3, 2010 1:56 PM CST reply actions

Oh yeah

And after reading the comments on the trade deadline thread I have learned three things

1. People want to trade Shepp Backs Nolan Burns Koivu Boogy Havlat AND Harding for either Crosby, Ovechkin, Parise, one of the Sedins, or Saku Koivu

2. If you play college hockey it makes you an expert in player analysis

3. People are EXTREMELY dumb

Back up Kipper or replace Kipper?

They’d have to be crazy to replace Kipper. I mean batshit crazy.

Russo has your lines on Twitter:
Wild lines vs. Calgary: Brunette-Koivu-Miettinen; Latendresse-Ebbett-Havlat; Nolan-Sheppard-kobasew; Boogaard-Brodziak-Clutterbuck

Nolan?

I didn’t hear even moderate rumors of Nolan being traded, beyond the normal speculation that follows a soon to be UFA. I can’t imagine why a playoff team wouldn’t want him. Is it possible they plan to resign him?
