Yzerman quietly interviewed last summer for the Minnesota Wild's opening - which went to Chuck Fletcher - but decided against it. Things changed this year because there are no longer any Olympic responsibilities, while Ken Holland and Jim Nill are going to sign long-term extensions. Can't help but wonder if being in the Eastern Conference, where he won't face the Red Wings as much, is also a factor.

It is difficult for me to believe that this did not get reported until now, but as I was reminded today, we aren't always told everything. Would certainly have been an interesting pick.

Opinions? Thoughts? Glad he didn't take it? Bummed he didn't?

Interesting.

Stevie Y would have been nice but I like Fletch and think he has done a pretty good job so far considering he didn’t have much to work with.

It would have been great, but we gotta play the hand we’re dealt.

In Fletch we trust.

After seeing Fletch work

I think I’m cautiously going to say I’m glad he didn’t take it. I think Chuck really has the business aspect down, and I think he’s the kind of GM that will trust the coaching staff to give him the right input to make good decisions.

Being a great hockey player doesn’t necessarily make people a great option once they’re off the ice; just look at Gretzky in Phoenix. It will be interesting to see what Yzerman does in Tampa.

that once The Great One left PHO, they started winning?

I think everyone noticed that :)

I may get rocks thrown at me for this, but could it be that maybe Gretzky isn’t so great?

Fletch rocks!

We should all just be happy He Who Must Remain Confined Forever is gone…

CF is really good at his position, and he’ll only get better. I agree with SpaethCo, I don’t buy that every ex-superstar automatically becomes a good manager or coach.
