Wild decide to waste a jersey on Sheppard

I have seen nothing in Sheppard’s flimsy game that leads me to believe that he will even be a third or fourth line player. He has no scoring touch, he isn’t a very good defensive player, he isn’t overly physical – what the hell is his role? Filler player.
NHL.COM - When analyzing James Sheppard, many point to his low point total last year (six), and his high draft position in 2006 (nine). There's one other number to look at when it comes to "Shep" (22).While yet to find his niche on the Minnesota Wild, the 22-year-old Sheppard will have at least another year to show why he was so highly coveted as a big, young center. On Wednesday, the restricted free agent signed a one-year deal to remain in Minnesota for the 2010-11 season.
The Wild also sent qualifying offers to Guillaume Latendresse, Josh Harding, Anton Khudobin, Nate Prosser and Matt Kassian. Morten Madsen and Jamie Fraser did not receive offers.
The Sheppard deal comes as a relief to a player who is disappointed in a rough 2009-10 season, but says he is completely focused on raising his game in a Wild sweater.
"Last year was not an ideal year for me," Sheppard admitted. "There is a lot I want to accomplish, and a lot of work I have to do to accomplish those things. It really is a relief to have this out of the way early, and it shows that Chuck Fletcher wanted me to be here to raise my game. He made that clear to me by signing me early in the summer, and he also made clear that there is a lot of work to be done for me in Minnesota."
Sheppard is confident he has a lot more to offer, but he makes no excuses for the inability to make an immediate impact. He acknowledged that several facets of his game need improvement, and he is devoted to improving all of them.
If I was the GM of the Minnesota Wild (that is my dream job) I say this; James thanks for you three years of service to the Wild but we won’t need you this season, we are going to try and land a player that will actually contribute on the score card. I mean seriously, who cares is Sheppard is first round draft choice, would it be different if he was a 2nd – 7th round pick, no one is going to take him off the Wild’s hands, he sucks. I don't think the Wild could get a bag of used pucks and dirty jock straps for him. I wonder if there is someone in the Wild's front office that is holding out hope (desperately) that Sheppard will all of a sudden Sheppard is going to blossom into this great offensive player that will lead the Wild to the Promised Land. Yeah! And I am going to be a super model. Wild Beat Writer Mike Russo has a very good interview with the Wild GM Chuck Fletcher that decided to give Sheppard yet another chance to stick up the Xcel Energy Center. I agree that Shep has been a disappointment...
but he is ONLY 22 years old. He is going to get better. Let’s be honest, I don’t know if it’s possible for him to be as bad as he was last year.
He was rushed into the league by HWSRN and JL. He should have been sent to Houston after he was drafted. That was a mistake by them. I’m not trying to make excuses for Shep, but it is a true fact that he was clearly not ready to be in the NHL when he was named to the team.
I am just hoping he gets it together next season. If he doesn’t , then I will be happy to see him go.
A year in the AHL may do wonders for him... The Wild absolutely have to put this guy in the A...
He won’t make any progress whatsoever if he stays in the NHL playing 5-8 minutes per night… If we wants his shittiness to… well not stop, that’s impossible, but slow down, he needs to play in the AHL… It’s the only way I see re-signing him make any sense… At the same time, it would’ve made even less sense to not give him a qualifying offer at the very least, because you can’t just give up on a player like Sheppard who still has time to grow. I will be pissed if he makes the lineup this year, seriously. It’s just a matter of patience, really. If he can get his shit together in the A, then we may see Shep’s good side someday.
The only reason he made the NHL in his first year is because of Walz’s retirement. But it was still dumb to not give him any AHL time whatsoever.

Yup, It's a shame to have such potential go to waste... hopefully he's still salvageable...

He was drafted to be Jeff Carter, and he turned out to be Stephane Veillieux. The AHL can’t save him. Nothing can. He;s a lost cause, and the Wild need to either bury him in the A, or just cut him loose. Maybe someday he can get his act together and contribute somewhere, but it won’t be here.

I wouldn't even compare him to Veilleux... Veilleux had heart... I would compare him to Pre-trade Pouliot.

I have to agree with BubbleWild48 Veilleux actually contributed to the cause when he was with the wild.
Just call me JS :P haha
I actually miss Veilleux, very much in fact.

Shep to the AHL
Would he have to pass through waivers, or can we place him in the AHL before the season begins? I agree that playing 5 minutes a night in the NHL just won’t get his development going. He sees no critical minutes, and I thought this guy was drafted to be a big-time center.
I would be willing to bet that the Wild could put him on waivers and no one would pick his ass up either.
I don’t know about that. If a team took him off waivers, they could send him straight to the AHL and let him develop properly like he was supposed to. Someone would claim him because he’s cheap and they could develop his game. I think we would be wise to let him come into camp, and if we don’t like where he is, start shopping him.

The ideal situation would be trading him...
But if we can’t, then we absolutely have to put him on waivers if he doesn’t deserve a spot on the team.

I definitely agree. It’s incredibly depressing watching a first round pick, #9 overall, get worse and worse each year. But in any case, my question still stands. Can we send him to the AHL before the season starts without placing him on waivers? I know Chicago has been considering burying Huet and his monster contract in the AHL before the season starts. So can we do the same thing with Sheppard if he still hasn’t shown improvement?

He would have to pass waivers I believe...
If someone picks him up, then so be it, it would be better than to be forced to keep his ass as a undeserving 4th liner..
