Update: According to CapGeek.com, Staubitz is an RFA, so the Wild will need to re-sign him, but that should not be an issue. He made $500K last season.

Update #2:

MINNESOTA WILD ACQUIRES RW BRAD STAUBITZ FROM SAN JOSE

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired right wing Brad Staubitz, a restricted free agent from the San Jose Sharks, in exchange for the Wild’s fifth round pick (#129) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

“Brad is a tough, physical player that will provide grit and energy to our team,” said Fletcher.

Staubitz, 25 (7/28/84), recorded six points (3-3=6) and 110 penalty minutes (PIM) in 47 games with San Jose in 2009-10, his first full season in the NHL. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta split the 2008-09 campaign between San Jose and the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League (AHL). He recorded three points (1-2=3) and 76 PIM in 35 games with San Jose and tallied five assists and 130 PIM with Worcester. Staubitz has totaled nine points (4-5=9) and 186 PIM in 82 career NHL games with San Jose. He was originally signed as a free agent by the Sharks on Sept. 19, 2005.

Minnesota now owns seven picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, including the ninth selection in the first round and four of the first 69 overall picks (#9, 39, 56, 69, 99, 159, and 189).

Staubitz vs Jordon Tootoo. Enjoy:

Interesting.

I had never heard of him before this. I’m bummed though because I love the Boogey man, and this probably means he is done here.

I am also a big Sharks fan, Staubitz is an extremely hard worker and a beast. Boogey was great but Staubtiz can actually put the puck in the net and skate well. Great move.

I’m agreeing with Tara: interesting. I’m not completely sold yet (him beating the crap out of TooToo helps, though), and as this likely means the end of Boogey in a Wild sweater, I’m a little upset, but I’m interested in seeing him play and after asking some SJ fans, he seems well liked there.

Staubitz!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok the kid can’t fight…he is fearless and was a big fan favorite at the tank. He’s got potential but can be a liability. For him to do well with the Wild and believe me as a SJ fan I am sad to see him go he will need to
- STOP taking bad penalties … learn to read the game … enforce when needed not just whenever you feel like it … Better puck handling…he’s got speed … more shots …

He’s got heart, grit and wants to play hockey… I think Shelley took him in under his wing a bit while they were both injured and you saw Staubitz playing smarter towards the end of the season but the play offs started and that was the last we saw of him and Shelley for that matter.

First night on the ice for the wild make him feel at home by screaming his name at the top of your lungs STAAAAUUUBITZ! I actually caught his attention a few times.

Anyway – All the best MN Wild and Staubitz…I hope this trade is good for both the player and the team.

Can't fight? I beg to differ...

According to hockeyfights.com, Staubitz has a 7-4-9 record. I think he can easily learn to take less penalties, enforce when the time is right and all that, I’m not too worried…

Excellent, just what we needed!

A tough guy who can put points on the board. Granted, he played for a much better team, but 6 points in 47 games is a ton better than Boogey, even though Boogey’s clearly the better fighter. Also, we may be able to sign him for less than what Boogey was asking for. Good trade, and it’s just a little taste of what CF has up his sleeves.

Good Move...

I am sad to see boogey possibly go, but we need a player that can do more than just skate 5 min a game. a player like Staubitz, Carcillo, Downie, Burish, they are the new “enforcer” class of the NHL. players that can skate and contribute away from the periodic fight.

Looks like Boogey's pretty much done.

I’ll have to retire my Boogaard sweater.

It's a decent trade

An enforcer that will take a regular shift on the 4th line and possessing of basic 4th line level hockey skills. From what I can tell, he’s got decent speed and balance and can play a gritty game. He just needs to work on playing a smarter one.

I love what Boogey can do as much as anyone, but I have to admit that the guy is a liability to the team at over $1 million a year for 4 minutes of ice time, regular injuries, being targeted by refs, having no one willing to fight him most nights, and not possessing NHL-caliber skating skills.

Staubitz isn’t a heavy weight, or even a very good fighter, but he will help balance the team, allowing the Wild to have toughness and 4 lines at the same time.
