Salary Cap Set for 2010-11

From Bob McKenzie of TSN:

Official numbers for next season. $59.4M cap, $43.4M floor.

Bonus points for anyone who can tell me the penalty to a team for violating either the cap or for not reaching the floor.

Now, what does this mean for the Wild?

According to CapGeek.com, the Wild have 19 players under contract, including Cody Almond and Casey Wellman, at a cap hit of $48,796,028 (includes Mark Parrish buyout). So that means the Wild have $11,578,972 to sign five players. Guillaume Latendresse, Josh Harding (or Anton Khudobin) still need to be factored in as well.

So, with this information in hand, what do you want the Wild to do next?

not reaching floor

I believe they just have to distribute the amount beneath the floor to all players at seasons end

PMB Strategy

Put him on LTIR, then you get his $$$$.

If he tries to come back, he has an “accident” in practice and goes right back.

penalty for "circumvention" of the CBA by exceeding the upper limit or not meeting the lower limit

is at the discretion of the commissioner. Actions may include fines, forfeiture of draft picks, cancellation (re-registration) of contracts, suspensions…

However, the only way to violate the CBA in this way (that I can think of) is to refuse to get down below the cap ceiling or get up above the floor at the start of the regular season. All contracts/transactions are subject to league approval, and no contract that violates the CBA (e.g. by exceeding the upper limit) can be approved. So, like I said, you would have to be above the ceiling (but below the summer ceiling) and then refuse to get back down below the ceiling by the start of the season (or the analogous situation re the floor).

Wait till this year.

Don't forget to factor in Koivu

Get Franchise the contract and build around him.

I say sign Koivu for around 5-5.2 mil for 4-5 years. If Chuck does the “PMB strategy” mentioned above the Wild will have Koivu’s contract extension covered and then some! haha

No offense to Buff, but if Holmstrom only gets 1.8 mil for doing what Buff does (AND is better at it) then I’m selling Buff’s 3 mil immediately.

Agreed

Thrashers took a big risk on this one. 17 goals in the regular season is not worth what they gave up in this deal even with Sopel and what have you. If this is the price, I hope we don’t make a deal. This draft is too deep for us to give up a high pick.

I want to spin the wheel of justice!
