NHL Entry Draft Open Thread

Your official Hockey Wilderness NHL Entry Draft thread is here. I know you were all waiting for it. The draft starts at 6PM central time, and is being broadcast on VS in the US and TSN in Canada. After weeks of preparation, we here at Hockey Wilderness are promising your expected level of conversation and timely news. Just as soon as Michael "People Close to the Source" Russo tells us what is going on, we'll tell you. Also, we will update this thread with trades or picks as the day progresses.

Here's hoping the Hockey Gods are smiling on the Wild today.

So now to decide

Do I watch the draft on Versus or TSN? Or is Versus just going to be simulcasting TSN’s coverage anyway?

My bet is they are simulcasting.

I hope so! Please, I’d like to have analysts that actually speak to hockey fans. As annoying as analysts are at times.

Wait a stitch… Speaking of “analysts,” would a TSN simulcast mean Pierre McGuire on my TV? Hrm… If this isn’t a lose/lose…

Ugh Pierre McGuire. Like I care about who his man crush from this draft will be.

I wonder

Think the islanders would give up their #5 for our two 2nd rounders and a player, say Schultz? Who am I kidding it would probably have to be Burns. Time to turn off my xbox.

I want to spin the wheel of justice!

I'm hoping here...

…but I want to see Nate’s first wild.com article about how all the calls were coming in about James Sheppard, but there just wasn’t enough as a package to allow the Wild to let go of their number one top-tier talent.

Make us proud nate!

That huge storm that has tornado warnings all around it is headed straight for Hutchinson/Cedar Mills (aka, my home.) It’s supposed to hit around 6. If I miss the draft, I will nooot be a happy camper.

From Russo

Before the draft began, word leaked from the draft floor that former Gophers defenseman Keith Ballard was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for Steve Bernier and the 25th overall pick. This could be contingent on who’s on table at 25.

Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.

by nathaneide on Jun 25, 2010 6:37 PM CDT reply actions

Also from Russo
As for the Wild, Chuck Fletcher’s got his paws in a lot of things, but it’s still unclear if anything of any trade sort would happen tonight. He had long conversations with Chicago and Ottawa on the draft floor, and sources say there is a deal on the table that could happen with Boston. It would bring a forward and a defenseman to Minnesota for a defenseman, with the Wild taking on more of the salary.

I’m still trying to dig to find out names. I don’t want to speculate, and it would be speculation because my source would not give me the names. Another source told me this is just one trade on the table of many trade talks, so this could be something the Wild just won’t execute on.

Fletcher did at one point huddle with assistant GM Brent Flahr and director of pro scouting Blair MacKasey for a long talk.

More soon.

Did it bennefit us to move down last year? simple answer, NO!

Yes it did

We picked up Matt Hackett and a prospect that helped us get Cam Barker.

Be reasonable

by danccchan on Jun 25, 2010 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly. Extra pick, still got the guy they were after, got a piece they needed to land a solid trade for a young defenseman. The Barker trade is, and was, a good one.

Schroeder would’ve been the better pick. But they should still move down.

Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.

by nathaneide on Jun 25, 2010 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Not with then intention

But an asset is an asset. Better or not than another pick, it still helped us get Barker.

And we picked up Hackett! Probably the best Wild pick in 2009!

by danccchan on Jun 25, 2010 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I say we stay with our pick. Fowler and Gormley are great.

by Kenny H on Jun 25, 2010 7:15 PM CDT reply actions

You did...

But Hurricanes are total !@#$ in the defensive prospect pool, so I thought it was a no-brainer, just wasn;t sure if it was between fowler or gormley, never thought of skinner

by danccchan on Jun 25, 2010 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Atlanta needs a defenseman

Here goes Fowler. Then the Wild should move down to 16 or 18. Poile would give up HUGE for Gormley.
