I don't post here very often...
But this news is too good to not say, ‘Thank You Wild’, for keeping my favorite player in Minnesota for a long time… as with Mauer and the Twins, it just can’t be quantified what having this type of leader secured for the long term can do for both team chemistry and the fanbase to have something to rely on.

Good Lord! That is huge.
I know Koivu’s the kind of guy who never takes a shift off and this deal is very much worth IMO, but I hope it doesn’t bite us in the ass at one point because this is a MASSIVE contract and a no-trade one at that.
That said, 7 more years of Kaptain K is gonna be SWEEEEET :)

I found out at work. My brother texted me and told me the news and I jumped up in the air and screamed YAY. My coworkers were like wtf haha and I had to tell them the Wild resigned their captain. Great news! Way to go Fletch!
2011-2012 $7,290,000
2012-2013 $5,400,000
2013-2014 $7,290,000
2014-2015 $5,400,000
2015-2016 $7,290,000
2016-2017 $5,400,000
2017-2018 $9,180,000
WTH?! I’m curious to hear the strategy behind this crazy contract because it looks like they knew they wanted a 6.75mil contract but wasn’t sure about the details so they just threw darts at a dart board…

Kind of strange that he gets the most money of the contract on his final year...

Reasons its not overpayment:
- Koivu became the Wild’s true #1 center since the 08/09 season so his 05-06 (21 points) and 06-07 (54 points) is him being a 2nd-3rd liner
- Until 09-10 season, Wild played Lemaire style trap where centermen are suppose to hang back and be the 3rd defensive player. Koivu scored 42pts in 57 games and 67pts in 79 games.
- 09-10 Wild struggled to change from trap style to offensive style. Koivu scored 71 pts in 80 games with a team struggling to understand the team system…
- He is the Wild’s captain
- He’s our #1 center
- He’s our #1 PP center
- He’s our #1 PK center
- He’s our #1 5-3, PP or PK center
- Logged #1 TOI for a Wild forward
- Best faceoff % for the Wild
- Most shots by Wild player (246, 2nd place is only 175)
- Tied for 1st for Wild forward in shots blocked
- Scored only 8 points on PP, meaning 63 points he made during regular minutes
- Linemates were Brunette (one of the slower players in the NHL) and Miettinen (who should only be a third liner)
- #1 center for Finnish national team
- Kills 7 UFA years.
What other roles besides #1 defenseman and starting goalie can Koivu not fill?
Koivu’s offensive numbers is expected to increase. Next year, no idea. Within those 7 years, definately. So as Koivu gets better wingers, the offense gets more spread out and as the team grasping the idea of an offensive style better, I think Koivu’s norm of 70pts should increase as the team gets better.
