Quick Lesson: News Sources
At one point or another, blogs are going to find their way into press boxes across the NHL. Perhaps networks such as SB Nation can even go so far as to hire "beat writers" and send them around the world with their respective teams. Right now, this is not the case. Each team has its compliment of beat writers, and for the most part, those beat writers do a fairly good job at what they do. As with anything, some are better than others.
The point of this post is not to lavish praise on the beat writers. We do that enough. The point is to point out that readers are still struggling mightily to separate the legitimate sources for news from those that either report completely inaccurate information as fact, or those that simply make it up as they go.
If you would like to come along for the ride, make the jump.
One thing that anyone who reads Hockey Wilderness knows, it is that I am a strong proponent for blogger access. The NHL has begun the process, but it has been a painful journey with many of the teams allowing bloggers in the box. I have defended bloggers, and I have criticized them, as I have done with MSM members. Who belongs in the press box and who does not is not a difficult choice to make, at least not from my perspective.
Obviously the old guard of newspapers, television, and radio are going to have first dibs. The thing that gets me, is we are told that there is not room in the box for everyone interested, and yet 85% of the chairs sit empty on any given night. This is not an attack on any one team. I have seen it at Vikings games, Twins games, Gopher games (and they credential almost anyone), and at Wild games.
Protecting the sanctity of the press box is what PR gurus get paid to do. There is no way in hell they are going to let a painted face, flag waving super fan into the press box and the locker room to embarrass themselves and the players. It just won't happen, and it shouldn't happen.
The point of all of that? Hockey Wilderness does not claim to be a source for breaking Wild news. At least the last time I checked, Nathan, JS, and I provide different angles on stories that you would not find elsewhere. As I once told Russo, we don't break stories, we comment on them. We will certainly pass on any news that is presented to us, or that we may come across, but 99.9999% of the time, that news comes from a member of the MSM, usually Russo himself.
With access, Hockey Wilderness could certainly be a place to come to for breaking news. We don't have that access, at least right now, and so we do our best to stay on top of happenings, and get the info to you as fast as possible. Regardless of the source, if it is legit, we want you to have it.
Now... what in holy hell are we getting at here?
While I am blocked from the feed, there are still ways to access Twitter feeds. Welcome to the internet. I run multiple accounts for various purposes, and blocking them all would be impossible. Also, signing out of Twitter, you can access anyone's posts you wish, so long as they are public.
So, we come to Mr. Brad Ratgen, "beat writer" for Hockey Buzz, the home of Eklund. Many people follow him. Too many in my opinion, but it comes with the connection to the site that cons people out of their hard earned money everyday. So be it. What I still don't understand is how people still believe he knows what he is talking about. To the point that they bypass the reliable sources and go to people like Ratgen for their news.
Case in point:
Per capgeek.com, #mnwild have 16 players under contract for next season and have $15,707,223.00 in cap space left to sign the remaining 7
Huh. Because if you go to CapGeek.com, it says that the Wild have 23 players under contract, for a cap hit of $56,846,026, leaving the remaining cap space at $3,528,974. Of course, CapGeek includes Nate Prosser, Casey Wellman, and Cody Almond in their number, none of which are assured a spot on the roster. Still, those three guys do not come close to adjusting the cap by $12 million.
Anyone follow the link to CapGeek and see where Ratgen went wrong?
The 16 players under contract is for the 2011-12 season. Yeah. Whoops. So, he read the wrong column on the website. Simple mistake to make, I guess. Yet for someone who claims to be a "beat writer," should he not have his own cap numbers? Should he not be able to assess the team's cap position without the use of outside sources? Should he not be able to work his connections with agents and players to get his own numbers?
I mean, I use CapGeek, too. It is as reliable a source as I have access to, and I have yet to find a time they were incorrect. The difference being that I can understand the difference between the column for 2010-11, and the column for 2011-12. For general purposes, when reading sites made using the English language and the standard Arabic numbering system, we read from top to bottom, left to right, but maybe things changed. One can never tell.
The thing that gets me the most is a tweet he posted just two days before:
@jrmehle Stop drinking all of Russo's kool-aid!!!!! Coveted is a little much, don't you think. Yawn :O
Stop drinking Russo's kool-aid. I'll give you all a minute to soak that up.
You with me? The guy who can't read CapGeek properly, and who "writes" for the same site that throws darts at a chart of players and makes up so called rumors, says that people should not trust the one guy who writes about the Wild on a regular basis with the connections and sources to actually get the story correct? Who should we trust, Brad? You? You still think Eklund has actual sources in the NHL.
Maybe I should run with the story that the Wild only have one player under contract, are $54 million under the cap, and are going to struggle to meet the salary floor. I mean, it's as accurate as what Brad is reporting. I could even site CapGeek to make it look official. Turns out, people aren't going to check my facts, they are just going to assume I am correct, right? CapGeek does say the Wild only have one player under contract. For the 2014-15 campaign.
Should we trust a guy whose main source of information seems to be Eklund and HF Boards?
The reason this irks me just a bit? Just a bit, mind you. I am all for people being able to express what ever opinion they see fit, whether it be based in fact or not. No, what gets me is that for all of the reasons given for why bloggers are not allowed access to the press box, Mr. Brad Ratgen has his credentials. Every game as far as I know. Bruce Brothers still has his credentials, despite not being able to tell you the difference between an RFA and a UFA.
Bitterness, thy name is Buddha.
Am I wrong, here? Please let me know if I am.
Author's note: I am not, repeat NOT criticizing the Wild's decision to credential who they do. It is their choice, and I respect their right to choose who they credential and who they do not. I simply do not understand the process. Perhaps it is not for me to understand, and that is perfectly fine with me. We will continue to do what we do, and if teams see fit to credential us, we will welcome that decision.

It does get frustrating.
Good blog writers should get a certain level of access to the team, in my opinion. They shouldn’t seek to be a beat writer type person, or present themselves as such. Russo works his arse off to make relationships, maintain information sources, present a pretty accurate and broad sense of what is going on with the Team, the players and the management.
A blog serves the fan experience of the team, channels and collects information, allows for opinions and theories, provides a place to discuss happenings or silly rumors. Good bloggers should get access to certain team events, Q&As, etc. Some separation needs to remain, as I think blogs go down hill when the service a relationship with the franchise more than with the fan base.
The Timberwolves SBNation blog, Canis Hoopus, is working to maintain a connection with the Wolves. They pulled together a Canis Hoopus night, a group rate ticket event, plus a private Q&A with David Kahn. They got invited to the pre-draft workouts for the sections open to the media. The have a certain level of access without being used as another Team Communication Vehicle.
I see no reason why the Wild shouldn’t allow a set number of Bloggers in the press box. I don’t know about the locker room… I think leave that to the Pro’s.
I think the Wolves are desperate for coverage right now. Any coverage. The Wolves are the laughing stock of Minnesota sports, which is a difficult feat when you realize just how bad the Gopher football team really is. The Wild may come around someday. I think they will start testing us a bit first, check our commitment level and ability to start at least somewhat impartial. Hopefully that happens sooner rather than later.

Once again, I'm forced to bow to you Buddha!
We don’t do news, we do information, transmission of news if you will. You could even call us an Editorial section or something. We give some facts, as well as some opinions. With news, it’s just an objective statement about happenings. With us, it’s subjective info, we tell you what’s going on and how it affects the Wild and it’s fans. Also, we like to think we entertain you enough for you to come here and have fun with us talking about our team.
And no, we would never stoop as low as making up stuff for your entertainment.

If you could post up that infamous video of Eklund using his dog to choose his playoff picks, that would only help your case.
HockeyBuzz is such a terrible site. These posters put up random rumors and people know its bad, yet they still read that crap.
The only ones worth listening to is the e5 rumors, and how often do those happen in the midst of 100 random ones that make no sense…
I love this site because like you said, it gives different opinions on certain topics. My favorite bit of HW is I am able to put my own views on those topics in the comments section or on the fanposts. Fans can contribute WITH the writers at the same, making them every bit as valid as the writers are.
This one?

Actually, it was a different video
It was for playoff picks and he used tennis balls…
I’m sure he does this with all the rumors…
But its hard to hate him with his kids laughing in the background…..
The only redeeming quality of hockybuzz is Julie Robenhymer
She doesn’t claim to be something she isn’t (i.e. more than a fan), and her videos are fun to watch. Anyways, I started reading hockeybuzz toward the end of this season, and the typical post from Eklund is, “I just heard from a reliable source that two teams are discussing a trade…more to come.” You just get fed up with it after awhile. Brad is the same story. I actually e-mailed hockeybuzz.com and asked Eklund and the site’s managers if they needed a new Wild correspondent because after the season ended for the Wild, Brad didn’t post a single article until after the playoffs were over. It wasn’t as if there wasn’t any news, and it didn’t seem like he was doing much to inform his readers. I finally gave up on him after his last post:
I’ve been a Chuck Fletcher supporter ever since he came to town, and he hasn’t done anything to make me waver in my support. I think the way he’s building this team is giving them a solid foundation for the future, and gives me hope that this team will be a perennial winner in the coming years. I think that the criticisms that Fletcher has received are misplaced. The only move I would question is the Barker trade, but he was injured at the end of the season, and didn’t show his true colors as a player.
In any case, I really think there are some very solid blogs out there to cover the Wild and the NHL, this one included, and I agree that there needs to be more access given to legitimate blogs, not rumor mongers. I didn’t know that Brad had credentials for the press box. Hell, if he gets them, there is no reason why a much more credible sight like the Wilderness shouldn’t.
It feels good to go on a rant. :)
I know this wasn't point of your rant...
But I like the Barker trade. The only trade I would question is the Kobasew trade.
Here's the difference
What we do here is cover the team from an unabashed fan’s perspective.
We don’t break news, we give the fan’s perspective on it. We don’t just document the play by play, we give it emotion. We don’t just recap what happened, we cover why it matters to the fans and what we may be able to take from it. We aggregate news other people create and give our opinions. We don’t have to be unbiased. We are able to vent and rant without fear of retribution from the team by revoking our access.
Sure, we’d love to be able to get in the room and ask Todd Richards why Petr Sykora was on the bench for 58:00, but instead we let someone else ask the question in the room and give our opinion on what the means for the team and the season ticket holders. We don’t have to ask Chuck Fletcher why they picked Mikael Granlund instead of Cam Fowler in order to give our opinion. Michael Russo is one of the best beat writers in all of sports, but for the most part, he can’t publish his personal opinion of a move made or not made. We can and we do. We don’t want to replace the Don, we want to put the fan’s spin on what he writes and the quotes he gets.
Sure, we may tend to be a bit more analytical than the average fan, and we may be able to take off the Iron Range Red blinders once in a while and be unbiased, but we don’t have to be. We can cheer a goal, boo a Canuck or say Fuck James Sheppard (even though we don’t mean that we hate James Sheppard, just the fact that his inability to play to his potential is frustrating).
It’s like SBN says. We are a community of the fans, by the fans and for the fans.
