SBN Expansion Draft: Minnesota Wild Protected List

Last time the Wild participated in an expansion draft, it was the one plucking has-been's and wanna-be's from the other teams. And the Wild received:

Draftee Previous Team
Jamie McLennan (G)  St. Louis Blues
Mike Vernon (G)  Florida Panthers
Chris Terreri (G)  New Jersey Devils
Sean O'Donnell (D) Los Angeles Kings
Curtis Leschyshyn (D)  Carolina Hurricanes
Ladislav Benysek (D)  Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
Chris Armstrong (D)  San Jose Sharks
Filip Kuba (D)  Calgary Flames
Oleg Orekhovsky (D)  Washington Capitals
Ian Herbers (D)  New York Islanders
Artem Anisimov (D)  Philadelphia Flyers
Stacy Roest (c) Detroit Red Wings
Darryl Laplante (C)  Detroit Red Wings
Scott Pellerin (LW)  St. Louis Blues
Jim Dowd (C)  Edmonton Oilers
Sergei Krivokrasov (RW)  Calgary Flames
Jeff Nielsen (RW)  Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
Jeff Odgers (RW)  Colorado Avalanche
Steve McKenna (F)  Los Angeles Kings
Michal Bros (F)  San Jose Sharks
Joe Juneau (C)  Ottawa Senators
Darby Hendrickson (C)  Vancouver Canucks
Jeff Daw (C)  Chicago Blackhawks
Stefan Nilsson (F)  Vancouver Canucks
Zac Bierk (G)  Tampa Bay Lightning
Cam Stewart (LW)  Florida Panthers

DUDE! Look at those names. Seriously, look at them. If there's one thing that can be certain, it's that the Winnipeg new-Jets and the Quebec new-Nordiques will have a better jump-start than the Wild had, if for no other reason than they don't have Doug Risebrough calling the shots.

The draft will take place today, on Thursday, and the results will be announced next Tuesday, after the Labor Day holiday. Stat-head Gabe Desjardins of Behind The Net is running the new Winnipeg franchise, and will face off against James Mirtle (formerly of From the Rink) of The Globe & Mail is running the new Quebec franchise.

So, who have the Wilderness chosen to protect and risk losing in the 2010 SB Nation Mock NHL Expansion Draft?

Protected:

G: Niklas Backstrom

D: Cam Barker, Brent Burns, Nick Schultz, Greg Zanon

F: Andrew Brunette, Matt Cullen, Cal Clutterbuck, Guillaume Latendresse, Martin Havlat, Mikko Koivu, John Madden

Unprotected:

G: Josh Harding

D: Marek Zidlicky

F: Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Kyle Brodziak, Chuck Kobasew, Antti Miettinen, Eric Nystrom, James Sheppard, Brad Staubitz

Two of our players will be taken in draft today, but we can only lose either one goalie OR one defenseman. Yes, I could have protected more players, but frankly, this gives us the opportunity to potentially lose some bad contracts. Is it likely? Not really, but I'll take a shot.

Who do you hope they pick? What would you have done differently?

I would have protected Pierre Marc-Bouchard.

Because I like saying his name. And calling him PMB.

Yeah

Unfortunately, I’d like to be rid of his contract.

has he played enough games the last 2 seasons to be available?

Oh yeah

08-09: 82 GP
09-10: 64 GP

Who? Butch?

71GP in 08-09
1 GP in 09-10

But he still qualifies, yes:

- Each team must leave unprotected at least two forwards who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.

What about Lats?!

Does he not need to be protected?

by ADN on Sep 2, 2010 12:54 PM CDT reply actions

Whoops

Simply skipped over him on filling out the post, he is definitely protected.

I really hope they pick up Sheppard…

by Gotty033 on Sep 2, 2010 1:32 PM CDT reply actions

With the rules in place with this draft

I highly doubt the teams will waste 1 of 2 possible picks from the Wild’s unprotected list on Sheppard.

ONE MORE YEAR! Haha

one can dream though right?

by Gotty033 on Sep 3, 2010 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

As for your picks

I agree with them except for Zidlicky. I’m pretty confident that Harding and Zids will be picked out of the group. If Zids was taken out of the equation, however, I think that Bouchard would be picked up (young, good talent). They both have around the same cap hit, and I think Zids is more of a sure fire contributor. To protect Zids would mean that we’d have to expose Zanon, but I don’t really think people will be knocking down the door for him (even though Wild fans love him).

At the same time, keeping Bouchard could be a positive if he stays healthy and Zids is getting old with a heavy contract.

by ADN on Sep 2, 2010 1:37 PM CDT reply actions

We can't lose both

We will lose either Zidlicky or Harding. My assumption here is that we lose Harding and Bouchard, though it might be Mittens instead.

If they take a goalie they can’t take a d-man?

by ADN on Sep 2, 2010 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Correct. The Wild can only lose one goalie or d-man.

I like it, but I would have exchanged Zid for Barker. I’m not totally sold on Barker yet, and Zid adds an offensive element on defense that this team really doesn’t get from anyone else. Sure, he makes some bonehead plays, but I think one outweighs the other. To me, Barker (or perhaps even Schultz) isn’t worth the cap hit on this team full of 3 million dollar plus defensemen.

by Jonsey on Sep 2, 2010 1:44 PM CDT reply actions

Also, should John Madden be in this list? I’m not clear about the rules if it applies to 40/70 games played in the NHL in general, or on the players current team.

by Jonsey on Sep 2, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Eek, whoops

Totally forgot he was signed.

Go back and look at who they passed on in the Wilds expansion draft, kind of sad what they could have had. Lots of good veterans who could have helped, plus Martin St. Louis, Evgeni Nabokov, Brent Sopel, Stephane Robidas and others were available.

by ncarp5 on Sep 3, 2010 11:28 AM CDT reply actions

I know for a fact that the Sharks used one of the expansion draft rules to protect Nabakov without actually protecting him. They traded players / picks to the Wild and Blue Jackets, and in return, the two new teams agreed not to take Nabby. As for the rest of them… I got nothing, except to say that HWSRN was in charge.

Did Joe Juneau ever put on a Wild sweater? Half the guys on that list I don’t recall seeing them play for us.

Many were UFAs

And at that time, you got a draft exemption if you “lost” a UFA

Andy Sutton, a 7rd pick, and a 3rd round pick for an 8th rounder and not getting Nabokov. That show go down as one of HWSRN best trades

by ncarp5 on Sep 3, 2010 11:44 AM CDT reply actions

How do you not get a 1st rounder for not taking Nabby?

by Chris Winner on Sep 3, 2010 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

It’s more about getting players than draft picks. Plus, the Sharks had to protect him from two teams, not just one. So if they give the Wild a 1st round pick, what do the give the Jackets?

In 2000, Nabokov had played a total of 11 NHL games, with only 5 starts and a 2-2-1 record. He was less proven than Josh Harding. You going to give up your first round pick to protect Josh Harding? Being the Wild, are you going to demand a first round pick from a team to get Harding?
