Big #mnwild news: Center James Sheppard had ATV accident in Vail yesterday, injured kneecap, had surgery & out 3-4 mths-Todd Richards says

Huge news from Russo on Twitter. This makes the decision of what to do with him a bit easier, at least in the short term, but it is unfortunate. This was to be the camp in which Sheppard either made it or was sent to Houston. Now, that decision waits three months.

This reminds me of

Erik Johnson’s freak accident with a golf cart. It’s unfortunate for Shep, since this season was the one where he was going to show the organization whether or not he was worth keeping.

As I was typing this post, a tweet from Erik Johnson to Russo showed up. “@Russostrib I’m not the only one now. Sad to hear though. Nice kid.”

Yikes

this really hurts Sheppard’s career (beyond how wrecked it is already).

In all seriousness...

No one wants to see the guy get hurt. Not even the most bitter among our ranks. Here’s hoping he has a fast recovery, and that the surgeon puts in one of them new fangled bionic knees…

I don’t want to see him hurt I just want to see him traded for a bag of pucks and a dozen hockey sticks.

Too bad he was hurt

You never want to see a guy injured. Plus it makes the decision that much harder and the team doesn’t get insurance coverage for his contract.

Exactly, this is worse news than it seems

I mean it’s bad enough he got hurt, but now who knows when he’ll be able to redeem his awful 09-10 season? Hope he gets well soon.

This may hurt his career BIG TIME…

Hopefully he recovers and the Wild can get this entire situation with him figured out. Maybe being off the ice will help him when he makes it back on it.

More from Russo

From Russo’s Twitter page:

#mnwild are currently investigating all details of Sheppard’s accident before determining course of action roster/contract wise

by Call of the Wild on Sep 7, 2010 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

could they send him down to Houston while he’s still injured? That way he would most likely clear waivers

by Hockeyfan_Miller on Sep 8, 2010 2:16 PM CDT reply actions

Nope. Injured players are either on the roster (on IR) or on LTIR. Cannot be traded, waived, fired, beaten, poked, laughed at, or sent to KMart.

They can clear up his space on the roster until he returns though.

by Eric B on Sep 9, 2010 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Indeed they can. One option is to suspend him, the other is LTIR. Either way works, but if they suspend him, they also do not need to pay him.

I think the LTIR helps the Wild the best because they can at least use the cap space in the 3-4 months that Sheppard is gone.
