I've been looking forward to seeing Jason Zucker at the X for the WCHA Final Five all year

I’ve enjoyed watching him on TV when I’ve had the chance, but have yet to see him in person (which is weird considering the amount of college hockey I usually attend in person). I was a little nervous during the WJC when he took that head-shot and missed the rest of the qualifying rounds. However, he came back and has pretty much dominated the WCHA. He is looking to be a First Team all WCHA selection as well as RoY.

The #2 seed Denver has drawn the #11 seed Mankato in the first round of the WCHA playoff best of 3 series this coming weekend. Under normal circumstances, this should be an auto-punch for DU to St. Paul next Thursday-Friday-Saturday (and, really, all logic says this should hold true). However, there are two things working against DU and Jason Zucker.

First, some back story… I am an alumnus of Mankato and still throw the majority of my college hockey support to Mankato hockey. I will have to pull for them this weekend. Again, under normal circumstances, this should mean an auto-pass for DU into the Final Five. However, I don’t want to pull too hard because a #11 finish should be embarrassing enough to this program to hasten the departure of its head coach, Troy Jutting. A series win and a trip to St. Paul certainly keeps him around—after all, he is under contract for something like the next 3 years. (Side note: there is very little that will dislodge coach Jutting form his job, really, but that is an even longer story and is besides the point.)

As I said, there are two very negative factors, from my point of view, at play that could keep DU from St. Paul and us from seeing Mr. Zucker in action:

  1. While I’d be happy for MSU and its players, a win “validates” coach Jutting—at least enough for him to keep his job: something I very strongly am against.
  2. Simply, to what I look forward with eager anticipation just doesn’t happen.

Sound crazy? Of course it is, but that is the shit I think about at 11:00 PM on Tuesday night, FML.

Number 2 there says something about the Wild’s playoffs, too, and for that I am deeply sorry.
