Hockey Wilderness Community 2011 NHL Mock Draft: Edmonton Oilers
The Hawks have defensemen. Some they stole from certain teams, shipping off their cap nightmare in the process, and some they drafted with picks they stole from other teams by trading off their cap nightmares. Either way, they have d-men. So, it was safe to say the fans weren't going to pick a d-man this time around. Right?
Right. With the 18th pick, the Chicago Blackhawks have selected Brandon Saad, a good sized left wing that is rated as a mid-round pick. Great pick for them at 18.
1. Edmonton Oilers: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
2. Colorado Avalanche: Gabriel Landeskog
3. Florida Panthers: Adam Larsson
4. New Jersey Devils: Sean Couturier
5. New York Islanders: Jonathan Huberdeau
6. Ottawa Senators: Ryan Strome
7. Winnipeg: Mika Zibanejad
8. Columbus Blue Jackets: Dougie Hamilton
9. Boston Bruins: Ryan Murphy
10. Minnesota Wild: Sven Bartschi
11. Colorado Avalanche: Duncan Siemens
12. Carolina Hurricanes: Mark McNeill
13. Calgary Flames: Joel Armia
14. Dallas Stars: Zack Phillips
15. New York Rangers: Mark Scheifele
16. Buffalo Sabres: Nathan Beaulieu
17. Montreal Canadiens: Jamie Oleksiak
18. Chicago Blackhawks: Brandon Saad
Up next in this fake draft, the Edmonton Oilers with the pick the received from Los Angeles in the Dustin Penner trade. Make the jump and help our friends out west make their second pick in the first round.
Taylor Hall, Magnus Paajarvi, Jordan Eberle, Linus Omark, Jeff Petry, Tyler Pitlick, Anton Lander, and they already added Ryan Nugent Hopkins. Now they get another pick? This is just disgusting. Flat out unfair and plain disgusting. How excited they must be about the future... must be nice.
So, with all of this young talent already on board, who do the Oilers at with this 19th pick? The prospects are a good mix, so it really should just be a matter of the best available player. According to most rankings I have seen, that player (in our particular draft) is Alexander Khokhlachev, who remains in free fall. I'm not sure why everyone is passing on the kid, he is already here, though he could use a cheeseburger or 20.
There is still a laundry list of players available, though, so choose wisely. This really is the last first round pick the Oilers get. This year.

John Gibson
is easily the best goaltending prospect in this draft, and while I would say they should go after a defenseman, there isn’t one available that’s worth taking at this spot. The Oilers haven’t had quality goaltending for quite some time now, and Gibson would be a really nice addition to this stable of way-too-good prospects.
Other: Connor Murphy
I picked him in the Lighthouse Hockey mock draft. The kid has some real talent but a fractured vertebrae had kept him off of many draft boards early on. After a great combine & U18 tournament he has answered many of the questions in regards to his health and is now ranked 19th in the ISS rankings. Size scoring & solid defense. Plus his father is former NHLer and current asst coach in FLA Gord Murphy so he’s got the ‘hockey pedegree’
Vote Yes on August 1st.
Armia went to the Flames already.
