NHL Draft 2011 Round One Open Thread

Draft_medium

It's here, folks. Day one, round one. If you are coming out to the X, be loud and let the hockey world know why Minnesota is the best hockey market in the NHL. If you are not, be sure to join the fun on Versus at 6PM central time. No mater where you are, we hope you will join us here for discussion throughout the first round.

Trades, picks, or just making fun of other teams, the Hockey Wilderness community loves to get together for big events. This is one of the biggest. If you aren't excited about this, you may want to move to the Congo. This is the future of the team, no hyperbole needed.

The Wild, as you should all know by now, hold the 10th overall selection. The Wild will be adding a very good prospect with this pick. Be excited about that.

To be fully prepared, check out the Hockey Wilderness Draft Page, which includes all of our off-season analysis, profiles on our top thirty prospects, our mock draft, as well as who everyone else thinks the Wild will select. We will update this page as the draft progresses, so stick around.

Also, if you are in town for the draft, be sure to check out the visitor's guide, and if you are in Saint Paul tomorrow, come down to the After Party at Bennett's Chop and Railhouse

After the jump, the order of the first round. Can't wait to see you all here for the first round!

But seriously, how is Philadelphia trading into the top 10

going to affect the draft? I was pretty sure Columbus would want to pick a defenceman. Philadelphia’s gotta want a forward, right?

I'd think Philly would be going for D

They now have JVR, Giroux, Simmonds, Voracek, Schenn… I think they’re pretty much set for now, but they have a shortage of actual defensive d-men. They have too many offensive d-men. That’s how I see it anyway, I could be wrong

Am I the only one who thinks...

Winnipeg have no business being called the Jets? Screw nostalgia, it’s A NEW TEAM, they didn’t get their old one back…

Totally agree. Winnipeg will be called the “Jets”, but still have Atlanta’s records.

I won't lose sleep either way.

If that’s what they want, then they should be able to buy it from Phoenix. You think any Coyotes fans are going to be protective over Teemu Selanne’s 72 goals?

by Georgie Fruit on Jun 24, 2011 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Nah

That’s one thing though, if WPG wants to retire Selanne’s jersey, they probably should be able to, seeing as he never played in Phoenix… but even that is kind of touchy…

This is Where I disagree..

There was too much tradition and fan pressure not to pick the Jets.

by TonyO on Jun 24, 2011 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

Tradition? Fan pressure?

They finally got their team after 19 years of whining, no one owes them anything. If they’re going to bitch about the team name, I know a lot of fans in Atlanta who won’t mind taking the team back, regardless of the name. Besides, it makes no sense to call them the Jets, they’re in Glendale.

How could the Wild not trade Zid?

I know he has a no trade clause, but if JML can fetch a second rounder, why cant we move Zid?

by wild32384 on Jun 24, 2011 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

Because

Zid has to waive the no trade, and someone would have to be willing to take on his $4mill cap hit… not many people would be willing to touch that… and I doubt that Zids opens up his no trade this year. Once he waives it, it is gone.

It is an absolute steal for you guys

Ask Kings fans what they think of Drew Doughty’s season last season, and they would say “inconsistent” too. That’s what Burns is. He is 6’5, a dominant physical specimen, but he skates better than Dan Boyle, shoots way harder… he is amazing, elite, in every facet. The complete, perfect defenseman at times. There is no one like him in the NHL. The Wild got absolutely hosed. You are in love with your players because you watch them every night, but the trade is not even close. Dan Boyle is now your #2 defenseman, and it’s not even close. I am in shock at this. It seems like only I and Doug Wilson have watched Brent Burns play. He is amazing. If there was one defenseman in the NHL I could bring to the Kings to play for the next five years, it would probably be Burns.

by jacktheboxboss on Jun 24, 2011 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Good luck

He’s the biggest headcase in the NHL. When he’s on, he’s great. When he’s not, he’s the biggest liability on the roster. Not worth it, especially when he wants to get $6M/year.

by BReynolds on Jun 24, 2011 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

An absolutely terrible trade

I am Kings fan that watches every good team in the West. I’ve watched every game SJ has played for years. Setoguchi is as overrated as they come. He put up less points than Brent Burns last season as a forward playing next to Joe Thornton on one of the highest scoring teams in the league. He is quick, but he has awful hands for a goalscorer and bad balance and edge control. Also subpar hockey sense, no playmaking ability, brings nothing defensively.

Brent Burns meanwhile is one of the most underrated players. He plays on a low scoring team where 2nd assists are hard to come by, yet he still outscored Devin Setoguchi. And Charlie Coyle is a slow “safe” draft pick with limited offensive potential.

This will go down as another gift for San Jose in the vein of the Thornton trade. Burns will likely go on to win multiple Norris trophy’s will the Sharks. You guys just traded one of the most dominant, complete two-way defenseman in the NHL, who is just getting better, and you didn’t even get back a top line forward. You didn’t even get back a complete second line forward. There is no one in the NHL who is 6’5 like Brent Burns, has his size and physical ability, and can skate like he can. It’s him and Doughty is the closest. You trade someone like that for a Jeff Carter at minimum. If they were going to trade him, that’s who you trade him for. A deal like this with a bunch of spare parts and a late first round pick, why didn’t you just hand the Sharks the Cup. As a Kings fan I am absolutely appalled by this. I didn’t think we’d see another Thornton type lopsided trade happen, let alone with the same team, in our division.

I have no idea what your GM was thinking.

by jacktheboxboss on Jun 24, 2011 8:53 PM CDT reply actions

What was he thinking?

Don’t spend $6MM on Burns because he’s a headcase.

Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.

by nathaneide on Jun 24, 2011 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah right

You really think there will be problems in SJ? We won’t hear a word about headcase for the rest of his career. He is an elite player who got treated like he wasn’t on a team where he had absolutely no help, where the GM never did anything to help his team be competitive. How would you act? Probably a little frustrated, same as Burns. Doesn’t mean anything.

by jacktheboxboss on Jun 24, 2011 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Your value on Coyle is way off. His value has increased drastically since last year and has become a great prospect. Setoguchi is very streaky but when he’s on can be a top line dominant player, much like Burns. The Wild weren’t going to resign him…

by Kingpin45 on Jun 24, 2011 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Setoguchi is never a top line player

Trust me. He had 42 points last year on one of the highest scoring teams, next to Joe Thornton. There are 3rd liners who get little PP time and have average linemates who put up that production. As for Coyle, he had a good WJC because he’s big and he got to play practically every minute of every powerplay in the prime position, in front of the net. If everything goes perfectly he’s a second line center. Burns is an elite player, everything they got back is “good” at best. It’s an awful deal. 6mil for Burns is very fair, and might turn out to be a steal in a few years. Face it, it’s an awful move. Just wait until you see Setoguchi’s “impact” next year. You think this will help the offense? Brent Burns brought more offense as a defenseman! This will HURT the offense. And whenever you trade a defenseman for a forward, and you’re actually hurting your offense, that is the definition of failing

by jacktheboxboss on Jun 24, 2011 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know about you

But I think Coyle and the first are what Fletcher had his eye on.

I don’t think that Setoguchi was a whole lot more than a 3 million dollar afterthought to balance the salaries.

"You don't understand anything, man. Leave your STUPID comments in your POCKET!"

by Georgie Fruit on Jun 24, 2011 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

the first is 26th overall

And Coyle was a late first round pick. You are trading one of the best, maybe the best in a few years (or this year, on a good team), defenseman in the NHL. If you want futures, fine, you get Brayden Schenn +, you get a top, top prospect or two. And if you’re really looking for scoring, you trade for an elite forward, someone who, you know, is better at offense than the defenseman you’re giving up!

by jacktheboxboss on Jun 24, 2011 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Coyle potential top 6 PFW

Who knows what we get with the 1st rounder… never know. We needed a potential 30-40 goal scorer… Seto is a safe bet for at least 25-30 with Koivu… can’t complain too much.

you Minnesota people

are just too nice and forgiving and laid back as a people. “Can’t complain too much.”

“We needed a potential 30-40 goal scorer… Seto is a safe bet for at least 25-30 with Koivu…”

Exactly. Burns should have gotten back a legitimate 40 goal scorer, like Jeff Carter. A legitimate 40 goal scorer on a normal good team, meaning 50 when put together with Koivu. Setoguchi is a 20 goal scorer on a normal good team, 25-30 with Koivu.

Burns should have gotten a 40 goal scorer on a normal team, he only got a 20 goal scorer. The difference is huge. Let’s not belittle it. The Wild just traded their best defenseman, and they got nothing back that will help them next season. Setoguchi will add some offense, but not as much as they lost in Burns. The Wild are now negative offensively from this deal next year, and a huge negative defensively. The idea was to return positively on offense.

by jacktheboxboss on Jun 24, 2011 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Burns can be a top player in the future, but Setoguchi who is only 24 and already has a 65 point year on his resume can’t improve? Get real. Coyle was a late first round pick but is now considering a much better prospect.

by Kingpin45 on Jun 24, 2011 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Again, you don't watch the Sharks

That was Mclellan’s first year. He played all season with Thornton, and Mclellan brought a new system that the NHL didn’t adjust to for most the season. It was a system where the Sharks defenseman shot the puck every time they got it, and Sharks forwards got to bang home rebounds. Setoguchi really didn’t have to make any great plays at all. This was the year the Sharks were flirting with setting the best record of all time the first half the season. Were they the best team of all time? No. But somehow they weer performing like it, because of the system. In other words, all their players overperformed statistically because they were getting gifts from the system. Setoguchi got so many open net rebound goals you couldn’t even count them. Since then the league has adjusted to that system, the easy goals aren’t as easy to come by, and look what’s happened to his production?

Why are you ignoring the facts? Setoguchi scored less points than Burns last season. That is the biggest fact here statistically. Setoguchi is a forward, he got to play with Joe Thornton, on a high scoring team, so how did he not score more points than Burns, a defenseman, on a low scoring team? He would have to be WAY worse for that to happen. And it did happen, so, therefore, he is.

Burns might be that player

But he’s not valued the way that a guy like Richards was.

That's ridiculous logic

He scored because no one else could? Having other people who can score HELPS your production, it doesn’t make it better. He didn’t hit 50 points this season not because of his goal total (17), but because of his assist total. That’s because no one scored around him. He’ll probably have 65-70 points in San Jose next season. Its a terrible trade. I wont harp on it any longer. Im upset with it because it’s not really fair. GMs are supposed to know well enough to not give away their best players, because it creates unfair situations. Now SJ has a leg up on everyone because they were in a position to accept a gift where others werent. If LA was deep at forward on needing defense (instead of the other way aeround), im sure they would have received the gift in exchange for Schenn and Simmonds. But because they weren’t in a position to take the gift, SJ got it, and now we’re at a disadvantage because your GM decided to give away an elite defenseman without asking anything elite in return. Why not Couture? Pavelski, at least. Setoguchi is the guy they WANTED to give away, of everyone they had!

It's extremely ridiculous

I have no idea what Olli Jokinen has to do with this. He used to be a good player. He’s tailed off. Nothing to do with your insane theory. Plus Burns isn’t the only offensive defenseman on this team. Let’s not forget Clutterback, Koivu, Havlat. Jesus. The more I think about it the less sense you make, and you made no sense to begin with. There are other scorers on this team at both forward and defense!

Also

Just because he’ll get 70 points with SJ doesn’t mean we lost the trade. Seto is exactly what we needed, Coyle seems to be a home-run prospect and we get a 1st rounder to boot. We have to look at what WE gained, not what SJ gained.

How is Seto what this team needed?

This team needed a 3rd line one-dimensional sniper who can’t even score goals, which is supposed to be his one strength? This team needed a Jeff Carter to play with Mikko Koivu. This taem needed a top line sniper. Setoguchi is not that. Setoguchi is Voracek, Brassard. Setoguchi is Mason Raymond if Raymond were slower, and a goalscorer instead of a stickhandler. He is not the top line player you guys need. You’ll see.

Coyle is not a home-run prospect. Jesus. He was a late 1st rounder. Look at the scouting reports when he was drafted. “Dont know if he has enough skill to have his offense translate to the NHL. Might just be a third liner.”

by jacktheboxboss on Jun 24, 2011 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Carter is a center, wouldn't have played with Koivu,

Coyle was a late 1st rounder and Datsyuk was a 7th rounder. Fact of the matter is, Coyle is now projected to be a top 6 power forward, we can live with that. Also, on SJ, Seto may have been as 3rd liner, but on the Wild, he suddenly becomes perhaps our top goal scorer. He’s not better than Burns, but he’s going to help us in a way we needed help.

So let me ask you this, you came to a Wild blog to argue that the Wild got hosed, but the fans here say you are wrong. I’ll put my knowledge of the Sharks, and especially the Wild, over yours any day of the week. You know, since you’re a Kings fan. You under value the Sharks players, over value Burns because he coming to a team you hate.

This is a good trade for both sides. That’s how things work. Not every thing works the way you want it to. If the Wild got fleeced, no one here seems to think that.

thank you

Maybe I should put it differently.

Burns vs Lidstrom, the Norris trophy winner this year: Burns is way, way bigger, stronger, faster, a better stickhandler, and he shoots harder. Lidstrom has better hockey sense, passes better, and shoots more accurately. But Burns has him beat in most areas.

Burns vs Shea Weber: Burns is taller, faster, a much better skater and stickhandler, is more creative offensively, and passes better. Burns has him beat in most areas besides toughness, defensive positioning, and shot speed.

Burns vs Pronger: Burns is faster, skates much better, stickhandles better, is more creative offensively. Pronger is better defensively, but Burns has him beat in most areas.

This is the player we’re talking about. He is an elite defenseman, maybe the best defenseman in the NHL on a good team. They got nothing even close back.

by unyieldingflan on Jun 24, 2011 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

so maybe he didnt bring it every night

maybe he was disillusioned with the stagnancy of the team. The point is the talent was there. I obviously think he should have been kept, but if you’re going to trade him because, liek you said, he wasn’t bringing it for this team every night, then you get a real return! They just got massive quantity over quality. This is the epitome of that type of trade. You need to get that one quality piece, the top liner, and then if you can get a prospect on top of that, you worry about that after you get the top liner on the table. What they did here is just a disaster. Setoguchi is going to be so bad for you guys. He was so reliant on Thornton and the Sharks specific system that helps its players get easy goals. He is going to be so awful for you guys.

by jacktheboxboss on Jun 24, 2011 9:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I beg to differ

Mark my words, Seto gets around 30 goals with a change of scenery and Koivu, which is exactly what we needed.

That's because they're homers

they watch their players play all season and fall in love with them. How many neutrals do you expect to watch the Wild, who are considered a boring team for the neutral? They just overvalue their own and undervalue players they know nothing about. It doesn’t mean anything about the trade. Perception is not reality.

One thing I love about the Burns trade is that Seto is only at 3 mil a year. A 3 mil first line winger is pretty good. that’s fantastic and allows us cap space to sign Granlund, Larsson, Zucker, etc… in the future. I am also loving the Phillips pick up. 95 pts last year is a lot of pts. In Fletch I Trust!!!
