Wild trade Brent Burns to San Jose

The Minnesota Wild have traded Brent Burns and the 2012 second round draft choice to the San Jose Sharks for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and the 28th pick in the first round in the 2011 draft.

More to come later, but I'm a fan of this move. What say you?

Setoguchi's contract is nice ($9M over three years), but Charlie Coyle's the key for me:

NHL Central Scouting's Gary Eggleston
"Charlie is a skilled forward, who can play a power game as well as a finesse game. He has very good size and athleticism. He has very soft hands and is a confident puck handler. His passes are accurate and proper for the situation. He has a long and strong stride and beats defenders with his acceleration and puck skills. He has a very good wrist shot to support his passing skills in his role as a major contributor to his team's offense. He should, however, shoot the puck more than he does to take advantage of his excellent shot."

This. So much. Fantastic trade for the Wild! Burns was overrated.

Why does Burn have to be overrated?

He’s a proven top pairing defenseman.

But at the same time, excited with all young pieces we picked up

I said this in the other thread

But the way that Coyle’s described, he seems a lot like Zibanejad. I like this.

You are getting

the 2nd highest goal scoring Defenceman in the NHL last year

- M. Beasley makes an alley-oop dunk. Assist: R. Rubio
- K. Love makes a 25-foot three-pointer from the top of the arc. Assist: R. Rubio
- W. Johnson misses a 16-foot jumper from the left wing.

I think Burns will do good with the fresh start. He’s solid, and he can score goals. Maybe they will let him play his game in San Jose.

Don't worry.

Burns will make an immediate impact, for the positive, for the Sharks. He has had a tendency to try to do too much for the Wild because they lack offensive scoring threats. When he tries too hard, he gets caught out of position. With the Sharks, he should be able to concentrate more on his game. I predict that he’ll be a steady allstar for you guys in a few years. Plus, he is one heck of a fun person.

Very sad to see Burns go , great guy and fun player to watch when he’s healthy. But good trade for Minnesota. Really excited to watch Setoguchi play.

We’ll see. I’m sorry, but MN has a bad history with turning good players into crap. It does sound good for us though.

Allow me to take a moment...

To Brent Burns, one of the best people and greatest personality on the Wild. I think I will miss Burns, the humanitarian, goofball, and one of ‘us’, more than I’ll miss his good, could be great but often frustrating, hockey.

This is a good trade for the Wild, though it certainly isn’t too bad for the Sharks either. Both teams addressed immediate needs. Burns has more value, in my opinion the Devin, but the sweetner of an additional first and Coyle for the future make this a great trade for the Wild.

Brodin, Coyle, Granlund, Larsson, Zucker, Hackett… it seems that the Wild are looking to put a new core in place in 3 years time.

Great trade.

As much as I love Burns, this was a fantastic way to get good young talent. Yes, I know Burns is still young but we need guys younger than 26.

I’m still shocked that this actual happened. I was at the draft tonight and literally screamed “WHAT?!” when Bettman announced the trade. I actually tweeted yesterday or the day before that the Wild should trade for Seto. I was pretty surprised when I heard they swapped Burns for him and a few other pieces.

I will always have a place in my heart for Burnsie. I’m excited for him to come back to the X next season. He deserves a standing ovation, that’s for sure.

Good luck Burnsie! We will miss you.

Bummer, but the right move

I’ve always liked Burns, but I think he’s got much better chances to win the cup with the sharks, so good for him, and I’ll always be a Burns fan.

It sounds like the Wild are actually sinking the ship a little to build a respectable team for the future. It’s about time

Top 6 player and 2 great prospects added to the system. Great work Fletch!

I’d say you guys robbed us only because I haven’t seen much of Burns. Not sure how Seto will fit into a team that’s weak offensively (no offense, pun intended). I was pretty excited about Coyle, but good for you guys.

And to be honest, I’m quite happy to get a guy like Burns. Still sad to see Seto go (always tough to lose one of the fan favorites, I guess).

Question: Is Burns a physical D-man?

I also can’t seem to find it, but he once laid out three guys right in a row. It was awesome.

I liked Burns. But yeah, you make this deal every single day of the week. Perhaps the Wild are starting to realize you can’t stock your roster full of defensemen. Liking the future for this organization.

Sharks fan here

Looks to me like a great trade for both sides. I’ve watched burns quite a bit and i am super excited to see him in teal. It’s sad to see seto go…but you guys (as wild fans) have shown nothing but class, so i’m excited to see what he’s going to do for you. He’s solid, and will do work for you guys. Best of luck, hope this can help ya guys get out of the slump and get to the post season…it’s always fun to watch when you’re in the mix!
