NHL Free Agency 2011 Open Thread

It's that day. That day when the world stops, and all of the hockey community focuses on TSN to see where the NHL's free agents will go. This year, we have a stunningly bad class of free agents, and not much excitement at all as most of the prime targets have simply re-signed with their team.

Boredom may ensue as we watch the talking heads talk about whatever it is they will talk about when there are no signings and no signings to care about even if they do. We can hope for some trades, we can hope for something spectacular to happen, but the likelihood is... nadda. Just a warning.

We'll be here for the day, tracking along with the hockey world as we find out who might come play for the Wild and where the Wild's former players head for their next challenge. After the jump, we will do our best to follow along with any signings throughout the day.

Remember, free agency starts at 11AM central time. For all our coverage leading up to today, please visit the Hockey Wilderness 2011 NHL Free Agency Page.

How about that crazy Ehrhoff deal that the Sabres put together?

10 years for $40 million (turns 29 in 5 days)
$10 mill – $8 mill – $4 mill – $4 mill – $4 mill – $4 mill – $3 mill – $1 mill – $1 mill – $1 mill

I hate contracts like this. A team should not be able to tack multiple years of such reduced value and extremely high front loading, just to dilute the cap hit… especially when it takes a player up till he’s nearly 40. Even with the Kovy condition, I think the next CBA is going to take a serious look at how contract values and cap hits are figured.

by Krotz the Wall on Jul 1, 2011 9:20 AM CDT reply actions

Agreed

The whole cap circumvention $hit that has been going on the last few years is ridiculous. Add to that the insane rise in cap floor which is forcing so many teams with no money to spend money they don’t have on marginal players, the whole cap is a joke.

by cgp711 on Jul 1, 2011 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

This will hopefully be addressed in the next CBA. It has to be.

There has to be some wording added to the CBA that lays out a % variance from the highest and lowest salary within a contract. Something like 25-30%.

Something like: if a player is making $10m one year (salary and bonuses), the lowest point in their contract could only be $7.0 – $7.5m

That could help the circumvention a little bit.

by gunslinger1 on Jul 1, 2011 10:19 AM CDT up reply actions

one other fix could be

that on contracts over four years, the cap hit each year of the contract will be the avg of the 4 highest paid years, one could also put in a provision that players with contracts past their age 35, if they retire before the contract ends, the teams are still stuck with the cap hit of the contract for the remainder of the contract. this would put an end to 10 year deals to players in their 30’s. with the above proposal, ehrloff’s deal would ahve a cap hit of 6.5m per year for the next 10 years, even if he retires after only 2. I really hate contracts like thes, and why isn’t the sabres going to be punished for this? wasn’t that the point of the slap on the wrist that NJ got to end contracts like these?

It is pretty clear

that the Wild will not really be singing anyone, but I am curious where Bruno and Mittens end up. I’d probably send a congratulations card for the team that signs Bruno and a sympathy card for whoever signs Mittens.

Also, you guys really got me thinking about D’Agostini yesterday and how he might look centering Havlat and Lats.

by cgp711 on Jul 1, 2011 9:27 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah...

I wouldn’t be surprised to see another AHL deal out there, but I don’t think we’ll see much from the Wild. Bagnall could even bee that depth D-man if the Wild don’t like anyone or the numbers being discussed.

Mittens could be a very good 3rd liner for the right team, or 4th liner. It all depends on what kind of money he gets and in what role he will be placed. He could be a pretty good depth signing for a team. It all remains to be seen. I hope Bruno goes to a contender.

Weak Class

You know that when Antti Miettinen is ranked as the 10th best Free Agent per Yahoo’s Top 50 UFA, this is a weak class. Is someone going to pay more than his $2.33 MM last year to get him? I hope for the sake of that team, they don’t.

This is a good deal for both sides. Its cheap, gives Harding a chance to prove himself healthy, and if Endras shows he can hang we can trade Harding at the deadline and Endras can back up the rest of the season. Gives us a shot to not lose a promising goaltender for nothing.

This gives the Wild an affordable backup that is both familiar and who wants to prove himself. This is a good deal for both parties.

As I mentioned on twitter

This is a great deal. Considering Harding’s last contract was for over 1m, 750K is a steal. Fletcher can now go into free agency w/o worrying about overpaying for a backup. That said, I also don’t think this would preclude the Wild signing another goalie if a better option became available (as unlikely as that may be)

I don't think there is any chance we will sign another goalie

With two signed for the big club, and Kuemper, Hackett and Endras fighting for playing time in the AHL where is the room for another goalie? Fairly non-existant if you ask me.

I wonder where we are going to get room for all these guys a couple years. I’ve read that both Granlund and Coyle could both step straight into an NHL lineup, Zucker, Phillips and Larsson may need some seasoning. May need to hold off on signing forwards to anything but 1 year contracts for awhile.

by ThatGuy22 on Jul 1, 2011 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

While 1 more year in Finland will help him

develop his body, it won’t help him with the adjustments to the North American game. He plays a positional game that depends on play making and his vision on the ice. It will take him some time to adjust to the smaller ice surface as well as the speed and physicality of the Pro game here. I would not be at all surprised if he started with the Aeros and starts getting call ups around the All-Star break.

by Krotz the Wall on Jul 1, 2011 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Even Koivu spent time in Houston. Helps with the adjustment to the NA game, gives him a chance to see the level of competition, be successful, etc. I think one year is a good idea. If he rips it up, bring him up.

Unless Granlund makes it a complete and obvious no brain decision that he has to be starting with the Wild, I’m pretty sure that Fletcher will want him to get his feet wet with the Aeros. has picked 2nd the past 2 years and they are a bit more than just a young goalie short of being competitive again.

by Krotz the Wall on Jul 1, 2011 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Good move for the Caps

With the threat of him leaving for Europe, getting a potential top 10 pick for him and a 2nd round. Think the Avs got fleeced

by Arols5 on Jul 1, 2011 1:07 PM CDT reply actions

To be fair,

The ’lanche do have a lot of young talent on that team, and they definitely needed a goalie to round things out. Still, they are going to struggle next year… that defense needs help. Very high price for a goalie that may or may not have his heart set on going back to Europe.

by Krotz the Wall on Jul 1, 2011 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

True

But they are a few years out from competing and it would be nice to have another top 10 pick to help them once those young players are ready. They also still have to sign Varlamov to a deal. Lots of unknowns in the deal.

by Arols5 on Jul 1, 2011 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Definitely...

Varlamov is not worth that price. Neuwirth… maybe. If that pick is anywhere near where I think it will be next year, that could really, really hurt.

by nathaneide on Jul 1, 2011 2:10 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Absolutely...

The contracts so far are only cementing the fact that the current CBA is broken. The Cap is too high and the cap floor is far too high. Contracts to mediocre FAs are too expensive. What with the cap hit loop hole and the average salary creep, things could get contentious. That TV contract wasn’t THAT good for growing revenues.

by Krotz the Wall on Jul 1, 2011 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no “play around the net” to Ward’s game. As a Preds fan glad to see him go for that stupid money. He isn’t worth a dollar over 2 mil and that is still a stretch.

by wrandsw on Jul 1, 2011 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.. misspoke what that...

I meant his play toward the net, not around.

by Krotz the Wall on Jul 1, 2011 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry just get frustrated at all the Preds fans that say he is a goal scorer when he is a 3rd line guy at best. 1st year was great in Nashville but could have lived without him the last two. The fact that he got PP time over Wilson and Goc was stupid.

by wrandsw on Jul 1, 2011 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Joel Ward to Washington, $3 mil per. four years. Yikes. Good for him, but damn, that’s a lot.

Per @DarrenDreger: Owen Nolan played in the Swiss league last season. Wants a 1 year NHL deal and is said to be drawing some interest.

Interesting.

LOL at Joel Ward's contract.

If that what he gets, Bergenheim is going to make bank.
