First Cuts at Camp Claim Nine

The Wild have announced that nine players have been trimmed from the training camp roster. None of them are bombshells by any means, and none should come as much of a surprise to anyone. This is all part of the process, and the cuts will likely continue fast and furious as the team plays four games in five days.

While training camp is a good spot to see where prospects stack up, it is also critical to work with the team that is actually going to be in St. Paul and get them all together and on the same page. Development can be done in Houston. This is for the big boys.

Cuts and some notes, after the jump.

Assigned to Houston Aeros camp

Joel Broda
Justin Fontaine
Mike Kramer
Sam Lofquist
Kyle Medvec

Assigned to Respective CHL teams

Tyler Gravoc
Colton Jobke
Josh Caron
Carter Sandlak

Thoughts

  • Joel Broda spent most of his season with the ECHL Bakersfield Condors last year after signing during prospect camp. It would not be surprising to see him in Houston, nor in the ECHL. He does, however, have an NHL contract, so no matter where he goes, he counts toward the 50 max.
  • Seeing tryouts Sam Lofquist & Mike Kramer assigned to Houston is promising. They far from secure, but have shown some fire, and it would be nice to see them find a place in the organization.
  • The assignments of Fontaine and Medvec this early is curious, but not overly disconcerting. They had little chance of making the team, and were slated to be in Houston anyway, but at the first cut? Not sure if there is anything to read into there.
  • The assignments of Colton Jobke and Josh Caron puts them back into the major junior program. This will be their 3rd and 4th years in juniors, respectively. They both have NHL that would count toward the 50 max if they were not assigned. Their development has not been great since signing during last year's prospect camp. These two are unsurprising, but we are left to wonder what the Wild do with them when they have exhausted their junior time.

Fairly minor news, but still, news that has bearing on the team's future. What do you think of the moves?
