Mikko Koivu Headed to All-Star Game

I am going to go ahead and expand Andrew Brunette's comment in Russo's story... It's about damn time.

In an interesting sixty second of time, NHL.com released a story with the "full rosters" that included no Minnesota Wild players. That information was quickly debunked as both Russo and the Wild tweeted that Koivu was on his way to Ottawa later this month for the corporate showcase of talent. How the corporate site for the league doesn't present all of the information is beyond me, but is less than surprising at this point. I digress.

Shake it off.

Mikko Koivu is headed to his first NHL All-Star game, despite being one of the best two way players in the game for the bulk of his career. He has made the Wild a better team, even in years with little to no hope. He is a machine on the ice, a leader both on and off. To be sure, if he were in a market like New York or Toronto, Koivu would be a mainstay of highlight shows and talk of the best players in the game.

A much deserved honor for a great player and an all around solid human being. Congrats, Mikko.

Also going (according to Russo) is Nick Johnson, or as he is known around here, the Best Waiver Claim Ever. Thank you to the Pittsburgh organization for deciding he was not needed in your franchise any longer. Johnson will be a part of the rookie skills competition. Nice to see a Wild rookie get some love, isn't it?

This part has since been removed form the story. Ah well.

Now the question has to be asked... will you watch the All-Star Game?

Best All-Star Waiver Claim Ever

Nick Johnson?

Is he replacing RNH? I haven’t seen him on the nhl.com list…

Must be. Not sure of the whole process yet. This is ridiculous.

I think your off on Nick Johnson

Here is the complete list from NHL.com

Nick Johnson is absent from the rookies. Those guys this morning that had him were just doing their projections. I think Mikko is our lone representitve baring an injury replacement.

They are missing Johnson. Russo is reporting he is on there.

Did I watch the Winter Classic when the game actually meant something? Nope.
Will I watch an All-Star game that’s a major joke and has no bearing on a season? Not a chance.

Even Skills Competition?

I usaully catch that because its kind of fun to see the top players in that setting. The game itself I’m not sure i’ve ever watched.

Not interested

The Skills Competition just adds fuel to the fire that is the circus of an ASG. Whether it’s a Home Run Derby, a Slam Dunk Contest, or whatever the NFL does at the Pro Bowl, those “skill” events just piss me off even more than the joke of a game.
Alex Ovechkin wears a hat, a pair of sunglasses, and uses two sticks and I’m supposed to be impressed and in a state of awe? Sorry, but not for me.

I would agree with you there.

I don’t like it when the league tries to make the game into something it is not. They are trying to attract more fans but what has always made hockey so great is it has the purest fans, not people who need it turned into the NBA to watch.

Since removed from the story...

I swear I’m not cracked. Maybe the replacements haven’t been named? I don’t know.

I’ll for sure watch the fantasy draft and skills competition. I’ll probably watch the ASG if I’m at home and not doing anything.

Come on!

You have to watch the ASG and the skills comp. I can put away the ‘we are so jilted being in the west and therefore im bitter’ and the ‘thats not hockey at its purest’ crap and just enjoy the allstar festivities. I think the skills comp is actually pretty sweet with the exception of the stupid best shootout one

by Burnsie4mvp on Jan 12, 2012 5:12 PM CST reply actions

I like the new skills comp. I don’t care a lick about the ASG itself. Nothing to do with the game. It is just pure corporate garbage. Season ticket holders don’t get to go because the league is too busy giving tickets to the second cousin of the CEO who gave $20 to Bettman’s brother. It’s a joke. Not about the fans.
