Wilderness Walk for 1-16-2012

Everyone is ready to see way more of this, right?

A month or so ago, the question was: How many ways can we come up with to say the Wild are pretty good? Now, the question is: How many ways can we come up with to say the Wild are absolutely cooked?

Last night's news about Mikko Koivu is not going to be well received. By any one. One thing I am a bit disappointed about, but not completely surprised, is the reaction from fans outside Minnesota is more about who replaces Koivu in the All-Star game than who replaces Koivu in the Wild line-up. Which is fair, but it sure would be nice to read about something that matters, and not the corporate boondoggle that is about to take place in Ottawa.

Ah well.

Links after the jump. I wonder what they're about.

I hope Fletch doesn't mortgage the future in a panic move.

Seriously, the names Russo tossed around this morning were pretty much garbage besides Ruutu who I wouldn’t mind having if Koivu were still healthy. Now we just need to take our lumps and get this season over with. Let Wellman play second line center, it won’t be pretty, but it will give management a good sample size to see if he is a NHL player (not sure if he is much more than a good call up right now).

wellman at 2nd line center

This makes a ton of sense. Lets figure out if we need to cut bait on this kid. If he succeeds we start next season with an experienced center.

Fletcher: please don’t deal anyone not named Zanon, Harding, Zid, Schultz, (or K bro if the offer is obscene)

I'm not too happy...BUT...

If Fletcher can maybe get some picks and we keep losing…we may at least have a really good draft. Aaaaaand that’s the only bright side I can think of at the moment.

Lot's of D-men that are projected to go early in this draft.

I wouldn’t mind us grabbing one that can play now instead of a project (no offense Brodin, you’ll be worth it in due time).

This season

From most comments, it seems like people are already looking forward to next season. Sheeesh! Let’s try to be a lil positive here. Maybe Mike Yeo gives a few trademark speeches (a la Houston’s playoff run) before every game, maybe Cullen and Heatley decide to carry this team on their backs while putting up season-highs, maybe…. oh who am I kidding? The Wild are done!! The fat lady has sung :(

Ways to say the Wild are cooked

1. Stick a Falk in them, they’re done.

2. Anyone up for some Pizza?

3. As the Stoners would say: We’re baked.

4. They just couldn’t bring the Heat.

5. It was a Cullenary disaster (Think about it)

6. POWE! The Wild’s bubble has been bursted

7. They Skoula’d the season.

8. They Zidlicky’d the season.

9. It’s Hards to win when the D isn’t Backs-ing up the goalies

10. Mikkoh-no!

Are you saying my jokes are inane? :(

Ohhh, who am I kidding! :P

Besides, you’re right, as far as nhl.com is concerned, there is no Minnesota Wild.

Your jokes aren't inane

because they’re jokes, they’re funny, and they’re posted in the right forum. But when a professional sports website makes every headline and video clip title a pun on someone’s name … that is inane.

So my jokes are good? JOY :)

You’re right though, you’d think they could lay off the puns a little bit.

oh, come on...

you guys ain’t done yet.. there’s only two teams in the West that should be talking this way (and maybe Edmonton).. however, yes, I do think the Wild will be looking over their shoulders at the Avs and Stars rather than grappling with ‘Nucks/Wings/Hawks/Sha-arks at the top.. but you’ve managed to beat a bunch of these teams before and you’ll do it again, with or without Koivu..
I, for one, am not on the “Koivu Out/Wild Dead” bandwagon..

Well

Considering the Wild have lost 13 of their last 15 (Only four of which were without Koivu), I have a hard time imagining them getting out of this particular pickle..

yeah, it's a big slump alright..

but my eye-test still says Minnesota will be a hard team to play against right up to the Playoffs..

We can only hope you're right

Because they haven’t been very hard to play against for anyone lately.

From Kent Youngblood
Yeo had some interesting lines out there for practice. He had Cullen on the top line with Dany Heatley at one wing and Nick Johnson on the other. Kyle Brodziak centered the second line, with Darroll Powe and Devin Setoguchi. The Third line was Warren peters with Cal Clutterbuck and David McIntyre. The final line was incomplete, as a player will be called up from Houston, according to Yeo. But Monday assistant coach Darby Hendrickson was skating with Brad Staubitz and Casey Wellman.

Yeo must have zero confidence in Wellman if he’s back down to 4th-line minutes again. Wild are missing three of their top-6, and Wellman is being asked to fill in with Staubitz. His time in Minnesota should really be done.

Either that

Or desperation to shake things up. I do have to say that it doesn’t make sense to put Wellman down there when he played so well with Cullen against San Jose.

Moving Clutterbuck and Johnson up I could see as a desperate to spark the team, but moving Powe up to the 2nd line over Wellman is more than just trying to find a spark. Nothing against Powe, but Wellman should have way more offensive talent, but Yeo is having Wellman play 5 minutes on the 4th line.

I think the writing is on the wall for Wellman.

Like I said earlier, good call-up, but doesn’t appear to be a full-time NHLer here.

I dunno, I'm not a fan of Russian players

There’s something about how they like to believe the KHL is a real league and always threaten to go there if they don’t get their way always turns me off.

The Wild aren'T fans of Russian players either

When’s the last time one of them played for the Wild? 2004? 2005?…Something like that, right?
