Stop SOPA

Please take the time to inform yourself.

Hockey Wilderness will have no content today, in protest of SOPA, the bill currently before congress threatening to remove the right of people like us t deliver content to people like you. The very act of our morning "Walk" would become illegal. A basic link inside a post leading you to the source information could be seen as a violation of the law as well.

Hockey Wilderness, and SBNation as a whole could be shut down for even the smallest violation, and even if that violation is done by a reader in comment of FanPost.

Take the time to inform yourself on this codification of censorship and blatant limitation of innovative thinking. Ask yourself if you want the US Government to protect old industries doing things the old way, or if you want to the web to be able to progress and create ever new ways to share and communicate.

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. Keep it civil.

(Note... if anything pressing happens, we'll let you know.)

Hold up

Clearly this bill is not the answer, but something has to be done about online piracy. Think about how dollars are stolen from those who created the content (its no different than the little chineese guy costing the Wild/NHL/Reebok by making counterfit jerseys). I think the idea for the bill is great, but the execution is terrible.

by Burnsie4mvp on Jan 18, 2012 10:25 AM CST reply actions

Agreed 100%. Being people who produce copy right protected material ourselves, we are all for ending piracy. The problem is, they let the wrong people write the law. If you want to end piracy online, you ask Google, not Sony.

Drug companies have a hand in it too

They’re mad that Canadian pharmacies sell the same drugs they make for less than they are gouging US residents. And they have a lot of money invested in politicians.

The movie industry’s always been a corrupt, book-cooking scheme, ever since they founded it in a place close to the Mexican border so patent violators could jump back and forth as needed. Maybe if they didn’t spend $75-150 million (or more!) on each crappy picture and charge $10-20 to see it, they might have more legal customers. When I see an interesting low-budget movie at the Riverview theater in Minneapolis for $3, the auditorium’s usually pretty filled.

Lines tomorrow according to Russo:

Seto-Peters-Heater
Clutter-Cullen-Wellman
Powe-Brodz-BWCE
Davey Mac-MacMillan-Staubitz

Obviously Peters is the #1 center by default, but I think the rest of these lines make sense especially after yesterday’s debacle. I’m not sure if it will yield better results but it can’t be much worse and at least Peters seems to be out there busting his butt, shift after shift.

I think it's been clear that Cullen has no chemistry with Heatley.

It has been tried a number of times out of necessity this year and nothing has been produced. I thought it was worth a shot earlier in the year when Heatley and Koivu were off a bit together, but now I see what I’m sure Yeo saw from the beginning, they just don’t mesh well.

In what way

Does Powe have anything to do with Belanger? Powe was brought in to play 3rd/4th line grinder/PKer. He plays that role well, injuries forced him to play out of his role a little bit.

Belanger, when he was here, was supposed to be our 2nd line center. Which he was bad at.

This SOPA Stuff

What is Ironic is that Wikipedia is Censoring themselves because anytime I try to look up something it comes up for 3 seconds and then it gets diverted to another site promoting to stop SOPA and asks you to put your zip code in. It refuses you to view what you want for more than 3 seconds. I put in my Zip Code and it takes you to another site and refuses to get you to your site.

They are in essence, Censoring themselves.

Actually, most of the “co-sponsors” of both bills backed down yesterday when Google went public with their protest. Only the primary authors are standing behind the bills, and one vote isn’t enough.
As for electoral votes, that’s only for the President of the United States. Congressional seats are still a direct election, which is where these two laws originated.
Also, the United States isn’t a democracy. Common misconception, but the U.S.A. is a representative republic. A true democracy would mean that the people, not a Congress, would vote on laws. We the people have that power in certain instances, it’s assumed that the people don’t have enough knowledge to vote and make their own laws.

Only thing that was cleared up (only because I didn’t explain myself well enough) was that the Congressional seats are still a direct election (which I knew but I didnt explain that Congress politicians say what they want to say to get elected but once in office they are persuaded by their own personal agenda or the Party’s agenda.)

I don’t think you actually need to explain that. The only people who actually believe that politicians will fulfill their word are the zealots that align themselves with one party. That’s only about 20% of the country that’s of voting age. 80% of the voting public is independent, mostly for that reason. They don’t see any major difference between the two candidates.
We really don’t need a lecture that Congress sucks. It’s been well established.

Well, just keep in mind that how you perceive civil disobedience is not how everyone views the topic. One of the great things about the U.S. is the ability to peacefully protest. It’s one of the freedoms protected by the 1st Amendment.
If it annoys you, then it annoys you. We don’t all need to be inundated with how it annoys you and therefore is wrong.
It may come a surprise to you, but some people actually find it more constructive to peacefully protest instead of whining about their representative but doing nothing about it.

And like others have said, censoring themselves is the whole point of this protest because if SOPA gets signed into law, it will censor the internet.
