We have heard of this thing called "winning," but the proof of life has yet to be delivered. What does it take to buy a win around here? Who knows, but maybe all it takes is a visit from a team that used to reside in the area. Norm Green still sucks.

The Stars are a good team with some recent struggles of their own. Those struggled likely coincided with the shutting down of the once red hot Eric Nystrom. Yes, that Eric Nystrom. Look on the Wild roster for the player returned in the trade, and you will see (way down at the bottom) "Cap Space Remaining." Sure hope that cap space provides something that will help at some point.

The Wild, on the other hand, have not been good at much of anything for the better part of a month. At some point, the Wild have to trip over a win. As Bruce said on Twitter, the Wild have given up on trying to arrange the deck chairs, and instead swapped the deck chairs for the chairs in the basement. Are Chad Rau, Matt Kassian, Jed Ortmeyer, and Nate Prosser the answer? If they are, the universe has a cruel sense of humor.

It's Hockey Day Minnesota. It's been a long, full day of hockey. Let's hope the Wild give it a proper send off.

By the way... good luck with lines. We're out of office all day. Watch for lines on Twitter, I guess.

Five Questions:

  1. Is it possible to win hockey games?
  2. Do any of the "new" guys contribute?
  3. Who is the hero / goat?
  4. Anyone care to actually play some hockey?
  5. Favorite part of the day?
Enjoy the Wild's warm up songs before the game:

Good news

Coyle feeling right at home in Saint John. He has scored two goals nine seconds apart tonight, meaning he has 4 goals in his first 3 QMJHL games.

Honestly

At worst, Zanon has been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Zidlicky actively puts himself and the puck in the worst positioning imaginable.

Right

The thing with Zanon is, what he’s good at, he’s very good at, but he’s pretty much one-dimensional. Zidlicky sucks at what he’s not good at and sucks at what he’s supposed to be good at.

I like what Chuck is trying to do, I do

Lord knows we’ve been boned in the talent department, and he is addressing that. BUT, if he is indeed trying to change the attitude of “suck,” that is something he could have/should have done by now.

Again, I’m not bashing him for what he’s trying to build—I think he is doing a good job and want to continue to see what he can do. . But, if it is as you say, that aspect should have been flushed out by now.

This “culture of suck” is something else on its own, IMHO.

Being from Minnesota, it would be rude to put something clever here.

by redheadzeb on Jan 21, 2012 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

I saw it on FRB and I think I agree

When the North Stars left, we hockey starved Minnesotans turned exclusively to the Gophers and high school hockey to fulfill our hockey related needs. So, when the Wild came back, they were never the #1 hockey team in everyone’s hearts here in Minnesota. Vets on the decline don’t want to be a part of a building/re-building team.

It seems like the vets rarely play hard, but the young guys do. With the awful drafting of HWSRN throughout most of the “growing” years of this organization, there weren’t many draft picks with a lot of skill making it up through the ranks. Hopefully, as CF’s picks make it up to the show, they will play with a lot of energy trying to prove themselves (as young, up and coming players tend to do), and set this organization on the track to long-term success.

New idea for contracts

Incentive-laden.

Forwards:
Goal = $100k
Assist = $25k
Goal against = -$10k
Shot on goal = $1k

40 goals, 40 assists = $5M
Give up 50 goals against = -$500k
200 shots on goal = $200k
Total earned = $4.7M

Defensemen:
Goal = $150k
Assists = $50k
Goals against = -$15k
Shots on goal = $2k

Example: 15 goals, 45 assists, 60 goals against, 200 shots on goal = $2.25+$2.25 – $900k + $400k = $4M

What do we think?
