Wilderness Walk for 1-23-2012

Steve Ott will sing on command. Who knew?

It's one of those off days today. It's Monday. Freezing rain last night turned into snow today, which makes me happy, but everyone else miserable. People are likely rather distracted by the fact they had to scrape 1/4 inch of ice off their windows this AM, though. (Hint: start the car, let it run and warm up first, then just slide the ice sheet off.) Ah, Minnesota, I love you.

Hockey news is a bit slow, though. Alex Ovechkin is facing suspension. Who's taking bets on that one? Other than that, nothing much going on. Links after the jump, and enjoy your day. If we missed anything, share it in the comments, would you please?

What about...

Ms. Jenna Privette? I was a little disappointed hockey day didn’t include a dedication to her. sometimes I think people forget this happened twice. One gut who didn’t forget was Jeremy Roenick who visited both Jabs and Jenna on a trip here last Friday. Class act from the guy, was very pleased to hear he had time for both of them on his stop here.

THIS!!!!!

I was extremely disappointed that they couldn’t even make mention to Jenna Privette. That one my one complaint about Hockey Day Minnesota.

From my understanding

There are conflicting reports if Jenna was even hit in the game. I am not saying she did or didn’t. She has a history of spinal injury problems and there is some confusion if the injury was hockey related or not. On top of that, the Jablonski story is the one people know. It was the shocker, the wake up call. Not to belittle what Jenna is going through, just telling you that human nature is to latch on the the one they heard the most about.

HDM was dedicated to Jablonski, thus that is why the story followed his plight and not hers. Wrong or right, there is enough to the whole thing that I can understand why it was done the way it was. Jenna’s story should be told, absolutely, but it is not like it is a major conspiracy to ignore her.

The funny thing is ...

There is a major conspiracy in her story. It’s pretty messed up, and I’m not taking sides, but wow. For the report to say there was no contact, for the officials (on & off-ice) to say there was no contact, then to see this video, it’s tough to take.

I would say this is why more people are not getting involved.

It’s a volatile situation and my bet is organizations do not want to be taking sides in it right now.

Interesting. I have never seen the video. Didn’t even know it existed.

I'm not generally a conspiracy theorist, but...

The whole Hockey Day MN should really be called Boys/Mens Hockey Day MN. The only girls game that was included was tape delayed and shown at 11pm. Would it have killed them to include one live girls/womens game on Saturday afternoon? If we’re promoting hockey throughout the State, shouldn’t we promote all hockey?

Does the lack of coverage of girls hockey also play into the lack of media coverage of Jenna Privette? (Not just on Hockey Day MN, but all the time.)

I follow Roenick on Twitter. He made several mentions of visiting Jabs – never mentioned visiting Jenna.

Regardless of if she got hit or not and regardless of if she had a pre-existing condition – she collapsed on the ice during a hockey game. SOMEBODY should be throwing a little love and encouragement her way.

“Hockey Day Minnesota” needs to be taken with a grain of salt. It is marketing, just like “State of Hockey.” HDM is a creation of a TV station looking for ratings. If it was truly Hockey Day Minnesota, there should be teams other than the Gophers involved as well. Would it have killed them to include a live women’s / girls game? No. But it would have killed their ratings, which is all they care about.

Again, I am not saying I agree. In fact, it is irritating. But it is what it is. I would watch a UMD or BSU game, etc before I would watch yet another Gopher game. I would also watch girls hockey, but most men won’t, and that is their demographic. It sucks, but it is the truth.

Yes. Absolutely it does.

Agreed. And there has been support, just not nearly as much as for Jablonski. Again, it sucks, but I think it has to do with the fact that Jablonski’s was first. It was shocking. It got the attention. Then it happened to Jenna, and the attention was already elsewhere. It should be more of a dig on the mass media than on those not giving support. Jenna didn’t make national news, so the support won’t be as big. Tough for people across the world to know about it if it isn’t getting media.

Also, and it sucks to have to say it this way, but the players aren’t as willing to be so open and supportive if it doesn’t get attention, because it doesn’t do anything for them. Some guys are just solid human beings. Other guys… it is all about image. They wouldn’t be at the children’s hospital if it doesn’t get on the news, etc.

Sigh.

Couldn’t agree more with everything you said. The fact of the matter is most fans want to see the big name schools/teams so they pick the gophers. Obviously UMD has been the better team for the past couple years, but most people who live around the metro area could give a shit less about the northern schools.

In regards to the girls thing. I can speak from experience of being a ref for the past 7 years. I began thinking girls hockey was a disgrace to the sport in some ways (no hitting, slow pace, etc) but through the years have gained tremendous respect for it. But truth be told, the majority of men don’t want to watch girls hockey (maybe for the reasons mentioned above). So basically until more people start attending the games lie, they will continue to throw it under the bus and tape delay it. Sad as it is, it is the truth.

In my head

I understand about the ratings and the fact that men won’t watch women’s sports. But in my heart it pissed me off.

I know a 10 year old girl who has been playing hockey since she was four and she would LOVE to see some female hockey players highlighted. She’s determined to play for Team USA in the 2022 Olympics and I’m planning to travel to wherever those Olympics are played to cheer her on.

Maybe I’ll start a letter writing/email/twitter/facebook campaign to FSN…live girls/womens hockey on Hockey Day MN 2013!

i like women's/girls hockey

I think the rule differences are a joke and I boycott them for that reason. Your telling me girls are too delicate to be able to check each other. That’s ridiculous and sexist and it pisses me off to no end.
