Wilderness Walk for 1-24-2012: Game Day Edition
Good news. The Wild game looks to be on NBCSN. Yep, national television. Against the Avalanche. Should be great to see everyone around the world talking about how boring the Wild are, yet not mentioning a word about the Avs and their overly stimulating style of play. Yep. Should be awesome.
Plus, you get the thrill of dealing with Adrian Dater, also just a fun treat that never, ever gets old.
Two choices. You can either skip this one, or you can bring the heat and join the comment section tonight. Should be a fun one to make fun of, if nothing else. We can all stand around and practice throwing flying elbows at each other, knowing nothing bad will happen since they don't land, and even if they did, it would just be against the Wild, so no big deal.
A few links. After the jump.

*Sigh*
I hope one day my cable provider adds NBC Sports so I can watch these games, I’ve lobbied them for the last two years and nothing.
I thought nbcsports didn’t start til this year …

Master of unsustainable passive regression.
I do think the NBC branding...
Gives it a little more credibility in the eyes of cable companies. Hopefully it will change soon. Otherwise my house switched to DirecTV and it’s been less money than cable, and the NHL network is on their “standard” tier as well.

DirecTv
I was looking to make the switch from Charter to DirecTv. How do you like it so far? Any problems with their service? Do they show all Wild games? The DirecTv rep made it sound like the best thing since sliced bread. Just thought I’d get a second opinion.

I have DirecTV
Honestly, I would keep my DTV over any cable company out there. I’ve had both Charter and Comcast, and their service compared to DTV was sub-par. Every Wild game is on DTV. You get NHL Network included in the package, which is pretty sweet. You honestly get 100+ more channels than you would on a cable company. The DVR (if you get the HD/DVR package) has way more recording hours than any cable company DVR. The new equipment makes it so weather blackouts are non-existent. Rain, snow, or shine, my service always comes through.
The only downside is that the OnDemand is not instant streaming. You have to download the program. However, since most people have Netflix (like myself), OnDemand is mostly obsolete.

Well it used to not work where I live, but maybe I should call.
Does it require a landline phone at all?
Not anymore. They switched from landline phones to high speed internet, and you only need it hooked up to your internet if you want to buy a movie or pay-per-view event.

Yep
And if you have the new DVR with the newest firmware and with their software upgrade, it’s fantastic. I love my DTV. It’s so much faster and user friendly than Comcast or Dish ever was.

Now if only I could watch my DVR or on-demand on my iPad or laptop
That’s the one place where XFINITY rules.

We are very pleased.
There was the little scare about the Fox Sports dustup, but that ended up being averted. You get FS North, NBCSN, and the NHL network, so all Wild games are shown, plus there’s a live game pretty much every night of the week between NBCSN and NHLN.
I was paying about $130/mo with Comcast before the switch. I’m down to about $91 (though I did buy my own DSL modem to avoid that rental charge). I know that’s an introductory price, but they spell that fact out pretty well when you switch, it will go up a bit after year 1, and then up to their normal rate after year 2 (which is the length of the contract, so you know), and that appears it will still be less than Comcast (certainly less than what I would expect Comcast to be in two years).
Occasionally I miss having OnDemand and ESPN3.com (because I’m one of them weird americans that watches soccer), but overall I’m glad for the switch.
