I'll begin with my first thought I had when I read this rumor on other SBNation sites. If these negotiations are secret and no one is releasing any information about them, how in the hell did this rumor leak? But, basically it sounds like the idea of teams receiving an amnesty buyout is back on the negotiating table. This could be very good for some teams, including the Wild, as they are a high salary team. Way over what the league had proposed earlier. So I thought, whether this rumor becomes real or not, we could have some fun with it. It's not like you actually wanted to work on a Friday anyway right?
I say let's take a look at the current Wild roster and see if we can't come up with some ideal candidates for an amnesty buyout.
Nicklas Backstrom, G $6 Million 1 year remaining
Yes it would remove a ton from the salary cap, but it also removes the starting goalie. Pass
Dany Heatley, LW $7.5 Million 2 years remaining
Once again, yes it would create a lot of cap space, but removes one of the few offensive weapons on an offensively challenged team. Pass
Pierre Marc Bouchard $4.08 Million 1 year remaining
Between concussion issues, not much offensive production when he is in the lineup, and his high salary, to me this makes him the most likely target. Not to mention there is a certain rookie looking to make the jump whenever the season does start, with basically the same skill set.
If the amnesty buyout becomes a reality, who would you pick if you were in GM Fletcher's position? Also, if the boredom of a Friday really kicks in, feel free to look at some other NHL teams and see if you can pick who they may want to rid themselves of. Such as Montreal, Gomez and his $7.3 Million is gone before the ink is dry on the new CBA. So people of the Wilderness, what do you think?
