Wilderness Walk for 2-16-2012: Game Day Edition
Deadline news, game night, so many things to do. I say we just just shut down and pretend the universe is made up of only one particle of matter. Distract yourselves with topics such as the meaning of life, the Roman Empire, pop tarts, giant purple elephants... whatever it takes to not think about the situation in St. Paul.
It still happens to be better than no hockey at all, right? Right? Anyone?
The Walk is dominated by talk of Marek Zidlicky, not surprisingly. If you don't want to read about it, go back to work. It's all about him, which is the bulk of the problem. It's. All. About. Him. Which is too bad, since the guy seems to really want to contribute, and yet remarkably, isn't.
So there's that.

To hell with trade value… Zids should never wear a Wild sweater again. Locker room cancers destroy team unity even more than losing. Excise one and maybe, just maybe, they can make progress on excising the other.

while i dont think Zid is the entire problem
I’ll be ecstatic if we can unload his fat contract for a lunch pailer (ie Brodziak circa 2008) and a 3rd. Anything more would fall into the Fletcher Rape Column (see: Heatley for Havlat). Too graphic?

Zids better be munching popcorn from the press box tonight
I don’t care if he’s had two not-horrible games, you can’t keep playing a player who clearly wants out while other guys (Falk and Lundin, who have been at least as good) sit in the press box.
You cannot tolerate the kind of “me-first” attitude that Zids has.

Zidlickygate continues
Yeo’s comment:
We want people that want to go to war for each other, that’s for sure.
With all the extra curriculars surrounding Zidlicky, I don’t think even Yeo believes Zidlicky is in that group. Tough to have a guy in the lineup who just wants out. At this point, another D getting injured is probably Lundin’s best bet to get into the lineup.

Reading this mornings comments in the Strib
I’m amazed at how easy people think it is to be coach or GM of a team. They think Fletch can just go out and make a trade to fix all of the Wild’s problems and that he should be fired for not doing it. They blame Yeo for being a rookie coach and thinking he is smarter than everyone else and that he should listen to Zids for ideas. I wasn’t really reading the comments when the Wild were winning earlier in the season, but I imagine they were in praise of the coach and the whole organization.
I'm surprised that you're checking out the Strib comments...

If I remember correctly...
the NBA came off it’s lockout at about that time. So was the Wild’s tailspin caused by the Jets triumpant return to Winnipeg or does basketball suckSO much that it’s return drained all the life out of the Wild? ;-P
Interesting theory...
Last summer, I was blaming the proximity to the Target Center as maybe a less-than-obvious but strong negative influence on our boys of Target Field and their craptastic MLB season…
Now that you really think about it, injuries (specifically to the M&M boys) were a major factor to the downfall of the mighty Twins. An organization that was exposed for just how shallow its depth was. Is it is just coincidence the same plight has befallen our precious Hockey Club? Could the suck from 600 N. 1st Street in Minneapolis be strong enough to travel the 10 miles east to St. Paul???
Being from Minnesota, it would be rude to put something clever here.
Dumb.
Wolves are much more entertaining than our attempt at a hockey club right now.
I don’t understand why people take sides to sports. I dig all 4 of our major teams because I like sports. Seems silly.
PEK > NBA ALL STAR WEEKEND 2012
I don't believe
the above was intended to be taken literally.
Not at all ;-P
And furthermore, I do agree the T’wolves are quite the entertaining bunch right now—makes sense after witnessing them being so terrible for so long.
Here’s the thing about a vacuum—eventually it can’t suck in on itself any further. In some cases, it will build up so much energy it will explode again. So… If my absolutely not based in science completely for jest theory holds true, the T’wolves pending success should explode out and transcend the sporting community of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Proximately speaking, this is nothing but good news for the Twins first, the Vikings next (if they continue to play at the Metrodome site), then the Gophers and eventually the Wild. We’ve been saying all along our esteemed Hockey Club is about 3-4 years away given what we know about the talent coming into the system…
Voila! There ya go. I think I’ve just proven my theory :) Of course… only time will tell.. Damn you time /shakes fist
Being from Minnesota, it would be rude to put something clever here.
Why take sides? Because basketball is stupid. any sport in which 100 points is scored regularly needs to be changed.
Football is watching a bunch of guys make the most predictable play possible, hit each other a few times, and then stand around for 35 seconds.
Baseball has got to be one of the most excrutiatingly boring sports on the planet, second maybe only to watching golf or soccer.
Why take sides? Because that is the entire point of the sports in the first place.

Well said! (Even though I have been known to watch – and enjoy- all of the above.)
I can't stand basketball or baseball, but I do enjoy football....
I just can’t stand all the ad-breaks, standing around, the huge squads full of unnecessary players…
Rugby is a far better game: Similar sport, no pads or helmets, same 15 players on the field for the whole game, fast-paced, far more athletic, the players are tough and not a bunch of overpaid whinners….I’d highly recommend it for anyone who is tired of boring football.

Zids scratched tonight
And we aren’t suppose to believe it is part of a trade? Supposedly this is Yeo’s decision, but didn’t Yeo say yesterday that Zids had played well the last three games? Something’s up . . .
Something could be up. I like it either way. If there is no trade, this is Yeo asserting himself once again. Don’t want to play for me? Fine. take a seat.

I love the benching if there’s no trade (yet) and this is just Yeo asserting himself. Now, we just need someone (cough*Kassian*cough) to squash that bug Bogosian…
conveniently, Bogosian has a lower body injury. I’m guessing it has something to do with Kassianitis.

seems to me like no one wants to play for Yeo at the moment. I do believe he is having some trouble get the most from his guys. You may spin it all you want but zids is just one guy and there are a few more that make up a team last time I checked. Yeo is Fletchers second rookie coaching error.
Yeah, you're just wrong
Zidlicky is the only one not buying into Yeo’s system, hence he’s the problem, not Zids.
Also, you can’t say Yeo’s a ‘’coaching error’’ when his team in first place before a blizzard of injuries to our top players occured. He’s only halfway into his first year and frankly does not have the players he would need for a successful playoff run, so it’s exactly 0% on the coach, if you ask me.

not seeing a lot of 'success'
with this so called system as of late. you can call it injuries but no really looks that motivated out there. and that to me is coaching. we saw it with Richards and we are seeing it again with Yeo. And if we don’t have the players….well thats a GM problem.
Lack of success
does not equal quitting. Zids is the only one who has quit playing for the team. If he is playing ‘better’ the past 3 games (although I am not sure I see it), it is because he has completely started playing for himself. Just take the first power play for the Wild against the Ducks (yes, the one on which his nice pass led to the goal). On the first rush, Zids was with the puck well ahead of Koivu, Heatley, and Brodz, with only Seto at the blue line. Rather than wait for the rest, he tried to bring the puck in alone, 1 on 3, and promptly turned it over. Then, on the next rush, he nearly turned it over again, only a good play by Brodz saved it, before Zids got the puck back leading to the ‘pass’. The first two plays have been much more characteristic of his play than the assist.
confidence
We are still recovering from a GM problem. It takes awhile to recover from 5 1st round bust in a row if you are insinuating that CF is the problem. Yeo is not the problem either. If your players lack the confidence to make one move or even have the puck on their stick and just chip it up the boards EVERY TIME… What is a coach supposed to do other than practice the way he does?
by wildfansec108row11 on Feb 16, 2012 1:11 PM CST up reply actions
Here we go again with this guy.
Look, you are entitled to your opinion, but I can’t see how any of this can be placed on the GM or coach. This team was not supposed to be good anyway. How do you expect the GM to improve this team overnight? Yeo has proven his system works when the players all buy in and execute. Richards was a mistake because he had no system, lost the players, heck even he looked lost and ran out of answers in his press conferences last year. He was just a poor coah, overmatched completely. Blaming Yeo and Fletch for this year’s problems is just ridiculous. I hope you return in a few years when the Wild are consistently good that teams do not just become good overnight and that buying expensive players through free agency and trades is not the way to win championships.
And yes I am aware that my previous post is littered with typos
My computer is having some extreme issues today.
It's a good way

TR couldn’t seem to match lines even when we had last change. Why would you consistenly match up Mikko, Bruno, and Mitten against Perry, Getzlaf, and Ryan. wtf!?!?!?
by wildfansec108row11 on Feb 16, 2012 1:19 PM CST up reply actions
I remember people saying that about Richards
just give him a chance. He’ll work it through……and as for Yeos system – first place in September does not give me much confidence in it. I have not seen it work since. And it’s merits are the talk of the town.
so fire everyone? if you are the GM, what coach do you hire toque?
by wildfansec108row11 on Feb 16, 2012 1:21 PM CST up reply actions
I think Fletcher had the chance to hire an experienced coach and chose youth. That I think was the second mistake Fletcher made in that category. To me that’s why he has to go. He gambled and we suffer. I would REALLY like to see an experienced coach in here who will make sure he’s getting the best from his guys – ‘good’ system or no.
top 6
You don’t think it’s the players at all?
by wildfansec108row11 on Feb 16, 2012 1:32 PM CST up reply actions
Nope
It has nothing to do with the fact that our last game, we had to play 5 forwards that have little to no business being in the NHL at all.
Therein lies the rub
An “experienced” coach who is available to be hired has to have been fired from somewhere else. Clearly they have failed previously in order to be able to be hired. That’s the problem. You can either keep going with the retreads, or try something new. Yeo won in the AHL and previously as an assistant. He had a good pedigree and Fletcher was able to give him a good evaluation from his year leading Houston to the Calder Cup finals.
Proprietor of Hockey Wilderness - We take Minnesota hockey WAY too seriously.
We all know
he is referring to Hitchcock. Do you have any insight that Hitchcock was interested in a rebuilding project like the Wild?
Try first place in December first of all.
Second, my bet is Yeo will be in MN longer than Hitch will be in St. Louis (and that is assuming you are mad Hitch wasn’t hired here). Especially when we have younger players coming up, a guy like Hitch doesn’t mesh well with youth too often whereas that is going to be right up Yeo’s alley.
ya.
Of course I hope your right. All I (we I think) want is a competitive team to watch and thus be proud of and thus would become the talk of the league and thus the league would take notice and then things like the winter classic might come our way. Right now it just feels a little like amateur hour.
It is Amatuer hour
Look at the roster we are trotting out, it has almost two lines of players that belong in the AHL. It is impossible to overturn a roster in a year or two. The reason we are not calling for Fletcher’s head, is we can look at our prospect system and acknowledge that when Fletcher came in we had a bottom 5 system. And now we have a top two prospect system. Fletcher has been setting us up for a continued era of success, not just trying to make the playoffs at the expense of the future.
I do need to point out one exaggeration
a guy like Hitch doesn’t mesh well with youth too often
That’s not necessarily true. Hitch didn’t mesh well with Filatov. That was one player, not every youth, and it’s pretty well established that Filatov is kind of a bust anyways.
Hitchcock has developed young guys well in the past. Dallas won a Cup, and Philadelphia was a very competitive team that went through some odd goalie struggles. Right now in St. Louis, he’s getting a lot out of both Shattenkirk and Pietrangelo. Elliot has found a resurgence under Hitchcock. Backes, a pretty young guy in his own right, has 100% bought in to Hitch and his system. In fact, St. Louis, as an overall team, is really young, but Hitch has them absolutely rolling. I think it’s fair to say that Hitch can work with young guys.
I think people have taken the Filatov/Hitchcock fiasco and blown it way out of proportion. Filatov is a hack who never put in the hard work (Sorry, Tom) to take the next step in the NHL. Ottawa tried Filatov and got rid of him for the exact same reason. He doesn’t work hard at all. No good NHL coach would tolerate a slacker. I can’t say with specifics, but I’m betting that Yeo would have the same problems with Filatov that Hitch did.
You know you're a Wild fan if Spam Whoopie Gerald-buns comes up in conversation
Mikael Granlund = Suomi Savior
This
Its more of “Hitch doesn’t mesh with players who won’t work in their own end as well as the offensive”
Partially true
Hitchcock’s system is pretty defensive, so if someone isn’t buying in on the defensive side, there are big breakdowns that are exposed. He may be more demanding, but every coach in the NHL today needs all 5 guys playing defense to be effective.
You know you're a Wild fan if Spam Whoopie Gerald-buns comes up in conversation
Mikael Granlund = Suomi Savior
No you are right, that was a bit of an over statement on my part.
I think Hitch can work with younger players, it helps in St. Louis that most of those guys have been NHLers for a while but you are right, he can work with them. I’m hoping Yeo can be even better, he’ll get to bring all of our prospects into the system and mold them his way.
Make that first place in DECEMBER, for a full month. Difference.
