Back in Denver for a rematch against the most exciting team in hockey. Woo.
Yes, the Wild were just in Denver. Yes the schedule makers for the NHL must think they are just so very funny. Yes the travel is ridiculous. But hey, the PA is worried about so many different aspects of the new alignment, it isn't just the travel (read: they want more money to allow the NHL to do what makes sense).
The Wild are coming off one of the worst loses in team history, the Avs wanting desperately to take the 8th spot from them, yet losing to the Oilers. Neither team is going to be happy, which could make a chippy "rivalry" even more so. Maybe this is the game Matt Kassian gets some revenge for the first meeting of these two teams. Maybe not.
Same lineup tonight for the Wild, as it looks like Mike Yeo gives his guys a chance to respond to the loss at home. Have to admit, I love the idea to not put Marek Zidlicky back in. Sends the wrong message, in my mind. Rather than seeing "We sucked, he's taking me out," the players see "If I whine enough, I can get back in." Big fan of the accountability level from Yeo.
There you have, folks. Big two points, as always. Enjoy the game.
Five Questions:
- Getting embarrassed can motivate or crush souls. Which will it be tonight?
- Backstrom back in the cage. Does it help?
- Wild need a leader. Who will it be?
- Any chance, any at all, that the Wild play the system for a full 60 tonight?
- How many times does Adrian Dater make himself look stupid tonight?

I thought he had a great game against the Avs last game. Yeah, he took a BAD penalty during our first PP, but you could tell he was peeved about it and came out and played a great game after. He laid a huge hit that set up the Heatley goal and overall had a good game I thought. Hopefully he can keep up the intensity.
I think so

And the passing was actually very good for 50 minutes against Nashville. The team just stopped working for the last 10.

Ah
IMHO, puck movement in general, even when they were winning, has been very suspect with this team. It is something that constantly frustrates me when I watch the Wild play. Then, watch teams like Vancouver or Boston… not even in the same league.
Being from Minnesota, it would be rude to put something clever here.
Well
You’re comparing the Wild to the Stanley Cup Finalists from last year. Obviously, the Wild won’t compare in most categories.
I will agree that the puck movement in general hasn’t be the greatest, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that both Stoner and Zanon can’t pass worth crap, and the defense as a whole hasn’t done a good job of starting breakouts. The breakouts seem to be too much:
1) Puck off the glass
or
2) Defensman skating it and forcing the forwards to stop at the blueline
Either way, not how the Wild want to play north-south hockey

Yeah
I realized it was a bad comparison, but it was the first thing that came to mind… I’ll go with St. Louis as well—I watch a lot of Blues games. I think you know what I mean; I agree it is obviously the breakout.
On the flip side, I think (again, IMHO) another team that has issues at times with puck possession but seems to be doing pretty well for themselves is the NY Rangers. I don’t watch as many of those games, but in the random sampling of those I have, I see them struggle like the Wild in that category. Again, just casual observation.
