2012 Yelnats Cup Playoffs: Round 1, Days 11 and 12

Were the Wild this pumped for a game in which they could suffer elimination? Find out! (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Greetings Yelnats watchers! Today, we've got 5 games on the docket, all game 6s, hence all possible elimination games. In case you missed it, the Columbus Blue Jackets, of all teams, are the first team to make it to the second round, dispatching the Dallas Stars in 5 games. Also, the Wild are in danger of getting eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks after leading 2 games to none. I decided to just watch the Wild game today. I'll watch all game 7s that occur tomorrow though. Tonight, we have:

Winnipeg Jets @ New York Islanders: Game 6

Edmonton Oilers @ Colorado Avalanche: Game 6

Minnesota Wild @ Anaheim Ducks: Game 6 (Featured game)

Anaheim Ducks @ Minnesota Wild: Game 5

1st period: The Wild's early lack of discipline put them in an early 2-0 hole, both goals scored by Ryan Getzlaf on the powerplay. One was on a slapshot from the faceoff circle, the other one from a one-timer set up by Corey Perry. Tom Gilbert injured Sheldon Brookbank with a heavy hit that also got him a roughing penalty. Rough, rough period for the Wild. The best chances they got were two posts hit by Devin Setoguchi. Dany Heatley, Tom Gilbert and Darroll Powe got penalties in the period.

2nd period: Dany Heatley FINALLY got his first goal of the series on a deflection in front of the net from a Kurtis Foster shot. It happened fairly early in the period and it gave the Wild some momentum, but the Ducks were pretty solid defensively. The 4th line got some brilliant chances for the Wild, but they couldn't solve Jonas Hiller. It turned out to be a pretty evenly matched period, but the Wild needed more or else they were out of the Playoffs.

3rd period: The Wild needed more of something, as I mentionned above. That something certainly wasn't ''penalties''. That's what they had though. The Wild took another FIVE penalties in the period and Corey Perry made them pay for one of them. That made the score 3-1 and things were looking pretty bleak until Cal Clutterbuck gave the Wild some hope when he intercepted a blueliner-to-blueliner pass and scored on the breakaway late in the period. Despite the Wild's best efforts however, they fell short and lost 3-2. The Wild are now eliminated from the playoffs.

Penalties shaped this series. They seemed to be the difference in every game. The Wild couldn't control their temper and after reaching the Conference Final last year and losing in 7 games to the Avalanche, they're out in the first round, eliminated ONCE AGAIN by the Ducks. One of those days...

Interesting tidbits: Well, the Wild have become the third team to get ousted. The rest of the Yelnats will seem kind of boring now! The Wild gave the Ducks 8 powerplay opportunities. Sheldon Brookbank will be out for the next 2-3 weeks after taking a hit from Tom Gilbert. It's a shoulder problem. Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf are now tied for second in the league with 10 points. Joffrey Lupul is first with 11.

Final score: Minnesota 2 - 3 Anaheim

Total shots: Minnesota 28 - 39 Anaheim

Boxscore:

Shots: Tampa Bay 6 - 7 Montreal

3rd period:

TB 11:08 V.Lecavalier (4) (M.Bergeron, M.Ohlund)

Shots: Tampa Bay 17 - 8 Montreal

Interesting tidbits: DING-DONG, THE WITCH IS DEAD! The Habs are eliminated from the Yelnats Cup playoffs. The shot totals per period were pretty interesting as well. Ryan Malone will miss the next 1 to 2 weeks due to a sore shoulder.

Final score: Tampa Bay 3 - 2 Montreal

3 stars:

#1 Vincent Lecavalier (G, A)

Final score: Carolina 3 - 1 Toronto
