The Minnesota Wild head to Detroit for their first road game of the 2013 season.
"The sky is falling, the sky is falling!" - Fans from both side of tonight's match up.
The Minnesota Wild lost their first game of the 2013 campaign, an embarrassing loss to the Nashville Predators in a game they had a chance to win, if they had just avoided the mental breakdown at the end. Of course, it's not like Niklas Backstrom is asked to make that choice every game. Thankfully.
Rather than stewing on the loss, the Wild head to Detroit to take on the Red Wings, a team that the Wild have had some success against in recent years. Jared Spureon sounds like he is out, and the Wild have called up Jonas Brodin to fill his role. Excitement, they name is every Wild fan on Earth. Josh Harding will get the start, and as it turns out, Harding owns at Joe Louis Arena. That, in and of itself, should be enough to boost the spirits of any Wild fan. Coupled with the intro of Brodin, and this is a can't miss.
The Red Wings are not flying as high as they once were, with Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom retiring, and a crush of injuries on their blue line, but they still have a couple guys you may have heard of. Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg can each win a game on their own, and the Wild have traditionally not had an answer to them. Maybe Brodin brought a tank they can use.
This will be the first road test of the young season, and it will be interesting to see if the players can bond a bit away from the pressures of home. There should be no excuses to offer, so finding a full game effort should not be an issue. If the team that showed up in the first period against the Predators, and the second period against the Avalanche can come out and play, the Wild will be dangerous.
Later today, we'll have some Q & A with the folks at Winging it in Motown, and of course, a game thread later tonight. While you are watching the game, be sure to check out the Minnesota Swarm thread as well.
