Wilderness Walk: 12-13-2013: $#!+ Luck Edition

The Sharks proved to be too high a... Hertl... for the Wild. BOW TO MY CLEVER PUNNERY! - Thearon W. Henderson

So, we're just about to start the third period, and I don't really have to start watching to tell you what's going to happen. Unless the hockey gods want me to re-do this stuff for a laugh (which I won't argue. I'll be happy to take one for the team), this is it for the Wild tonight. The Wild will lose, again. Another road game. And by my count, that takes the Wild to 3-9 against Western Conference playoff teams.

The Wild are still in the thick of things, but at the same time, it ain't looking great for the Wild.

But hey, the Iowa Wild won tonight! That's something.

So, the Wild loss means one thing: So far, yesterday's gambit of re-calling Brett Bulmer from Iowa didn't make the impact that they'd hoped. So far, he's got some hits, and a couple of shots on some minimal ice time.

Speaking of ice time, the Wild really miss Mikael Granlund. Before his injury, Mikko Koivu's two highest ice times (non-OT games) were 22:23 and 22:47, against Chicago and St. Louis. Makes sense, they're two of the Wild's biggest division rivals from whom they needed to get points against. But since Granlund got his concussion, here's a sampling of some of Koivu's ice times: 24:50 (PHX), 25:29 (COL), 22:49 (CBJ), 23:44 (vs. SJS), and 22:13 (ANA). With about 10 minutes left to go in the third period, Koivu's poised to break the 22 minute mark.

It's great to see Koivu do his best Ryan Suter impersonation when the team needs it. But the Wild struggled in the playoffs in part because Koivu didn't perform. They insisted that he was fatigued, not hurt. So, how is playing Koivu so many minutes going to be beneficial? There should be lineup depth on this team, and the Wild would be do good to utilize it, even if it means winning a few less faceoffs.

Anyway, we're pretty busy, so let's get on to the Walk.
