Day 1 Recap
Day 1 started off quickly off with a few surprise picks. While Seth Jones and Nathan Mackinnon were selected where they are projected to go, Tampa Bay skipped over talented Jonathan Drouin for a high risk/high reward Russian forward Valeri Nichushkin.
Drouin, considered by some to be a lock for a top three pick, found his way falling all the way to number #5 to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Likewise, Calgary also was able to catch a faller in Aleksander Barkov. Ranked #3 in the HW Draft Rankings (which will be published soon, don't worry!), he finds his way to the Flames at #6.
Day 1 finished off with another surprise pick in defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. Many expected the Oilers to select centerman Sean Monahan or defenseman Darnell Nurse, but the Oilers loved that Ristolainen gave them a safe prospect who also has a strong upside to be a solid #2 defenseman. Some consider this a safe but smart pick.
DAY 1 SELECTIONS
1ST OVERALL - The Colorado Avalanche select two-way defenseman, Seth Jones.
General Manager HDZx:
I think he is the best overall pick in the draft, but that’s because I value d-men so much.
2ND OVERALL - The Florida Panthers select goal-scoring forward, Nathan Mackinnon
General Manager DashyMN:
Its between Mackinnon and Drouin. Mackinnon would a tandem at center similar to Pittsburgh, which you can’t go wrong with, but a pure sniper like Drouin would fill the need for a left shot on the point either behind Kulikov for the PP. Sorry Jonny, but when you get a chance at #2 to draft somone with so many parallels to Sidney Crosby, we’ll take our chances in the 2nd round for that lefty point shot:
3RD OVERALL - The Tampa Bay Lightning select powerforward Valeri Nichushkin
General Manager John Fontana:
It’s only now that the Europeans are getting focus (with thanks to the combine). Rhetoric started earlier here in Tampa about Valeri Nichushkin, and this weekend, Barkov has turned heads at the combine.Nichushkin represents both a high-risk/high-reward package. He has the tools and is already playing at the adult level in the KHL. The risk being that If he doesn’t stick in Tampa and returns to the KHL, he doesn’t come back. Adjusting to North American hockey isn’t as easy as it looks but then again, moving up from Junior to the NHL game (even as a North American native) isn’t easy either ("Hello, my name is: Brett Connolly").
4TH OVERALL - The Nashville Predators select two-way forward Elias Lindholm.
HW Danccchan's Take:
Some are surprised Lindholm over Drouin or Barkov but the Swedish forward is extremely smart in all zones of the ice. Nashville have a number of defensive prospects and role players and Lindholm now adds some skill to that group. His two-way smarts will fit perfectly in a Trotz run system.
5TH OVERALL - The Carolina Hurricanes select dynamic winger Jonathan Drouin
General Manager wild32384
ISS Top 30 Best hands in draft. Controls puck & ability to make everyone around him better. Great creativity. Will fit nicely with Jeff Skinner and up and coming team.
6TH OVERALL - The Calgary Flames select two-way centerman Aleksander Barkov
General Manager niemonster3
He is a big center who is good on both sides of the puck. A great piece to start the rebuild.
7TH OVERALL - The Edmonton Oilers select all-round defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen
HW Danccchan's Take:
The Oilers have a hole at center and defense. The current defensive group is deep but lacks prospects with strong potential to be a top pairing player. Ristolainen gives them that and a player who is close to NHL-ready as well.
