HW Community Mock Draft 2013: Day 3

Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE

On the board: WildFinn. You have until 12:00AM CDT to make your pick!

Spots still open: MTL, OTT, PHI, VAN

Day 2 Recap

After a late start (whoops...), the draft resumed with prospects being selected at their projected spots. There were very few surprises on Day 2 with teams making the smart choices for their organization.

However, trades were now starting to happen as prospects begin to fall and as some teams get anxious on getting their top players.

With the New Jersey Devils about to select at #9, GM Flying Finns made a strong push and traded away their 15th overall pick, their 3rd and 6th round picks in order to push up. Once the deal was made, the Islanders were pleased to select Sean Monahan, originally ranked #6 by Hockey Wilderness.

Day 3 will now start with the Winnipeg Jets!

DAY 1 SELECTIONS

8TH OVERALL - The Buffalo Sabres select physical Russian defenseman Nikita Zadorov.

HW Danccchan's Take:

The team has a very well-rounded prospect pool so they add a prospect that brings a special talent; the ability to be a dominant hardhitting and gritty player

9TH OVERALL - The New York Islanders select two-way centerman Sean Monahan.

General Manager Flying Finns!:

A great two way center and leader with a very high hockey IQ in the mold of David Krejci.
Fantastic at draws and will form a dangerous 1-2 punch with Tavares-Strome / Monahan-Niederreiter in the future..

10TH OVERALL - The Dallas Stars select goal-scorer Hunter Shinkaruk

General Manager Mike Murphy "Dig Deep":

The first and most obvious reason is the name. I am not sure what a Shinkaruk is but it sounds like the Inuit word for “Snow Demon"… that alone is reason enough for me to take him. Apparently he also is pretty good at hockey which is a big plus.

There are a lot of needs in Dallas but what strikes me as something that is a serious problem is the recent trend to get older via trades and free agency over the past two years, especially in the top six forwards. Obviously Jagr is gone but Erik Cole and Ray Whitney remain and the two geriatric forwards are under contract until the end of the upcoming season. I heard from an unreliable source that Whitney and Cole are so old that they arrive to games in an oxen-drawn covered wagon like the ones from Oregon Trail. In a perfect world the veterans would serve as solid stopgaps and teachers until a prospect emerges in the Dallas system that looks like they are ready to play top six minutes and give Loui Eriksson and Jamie Benn a little bit of help putting the puck into the opponent’s net. Shinkaruk could very well be that guy.

Hunter Shinkaruk supposedly can play both wing and center which is something that Dallas should be thrilled about and he is one of the most outstanding offensive players available in this year’s draft. Shinkaruk represents skill, creativity, and a potential top-line scorer which is something every hockey team can use and the last time I checked the Dallas Stars play hockey.

Now, in accordance with the tradition I just made up, it’s time to give Shinkaruk a pair of boots, a cowboy hat, and a rack of ribs that is three times bigger than his head. Welcome to Texas Hunter. Now let’s go eat some ribs.

11TH OVERALL - The Philadelphia Flyers select huge two-way defenseman Darnell Nurse.

HW Danccchan's Take:

The team lacks bluechip talent at all positions so they pick the prospect with the highest upside. Nurse also has the look and playing style of a future Flyer!

12TH OVERALL - The Phoenix Coyotes select versatile and skilled Alexander Wennberg

General Manager jerem77

The 6-1 C/LW is a great skater with high hockey IQ. He is also responsible defensively and not afraid to throw his body around. Scored 14 goals in the SWE-1 league this past season as well as 2 goals in the World Juniors so the offensive upside is there as well.
