Wilderness Walk 7-12-2013

Could Jonathon Blum solidify the blue line? - Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

With no more Matt Cooke to talk about, we welcome Jonathon Blum (probably)!

So, while looking for stuff in my Twitter feed, I realized that I couldn't navigate it due to something called Sharknado.

Whatever that is.

So, we have a smattering of Wild News, and none of it was about Matt Cooke! So you guys should be OK with that.

Let's get to the Walk.

Wild News

Multiple sources say Wild will sign defenseman Blum | StarTribune.com- I like this. Low risk move, and as a former top prospect, might yield a decent return for the Wild. It seems like he might have been caught in a numbers game, and we'll see if a change of scenery does well for him. It can't hurt.

Wild close to signing Nashville Predators defenseman Jonathon Blum | StarTribune.com- The blog post when this news came out.

The Team of 18,001: Jason Pominville's Contract Extension- Giles analyzes the Jason Pominville situation. I know that the Wild gave up a lot for him, but you shouldn't consider a contract extension part of a trade. It's not guaranteed that a player will extend, and thusly not an asset you are trading for. I don't think that trade should hinge on whether the Wild can extend him or not. If Pominville leads the Wild to the playoffs, and maybe even helps them win a round or two, then it's a success for the Wild, even if they don't manage to extend him.

Off the Trail

Ilya Kovalchuk has retired from the NHL | Backhand Shelf | Blogs | theScore.com- Still pretty surprising. Remember: Kovalchuk's contract is probably a big reason the Wild have Parise. So there's that.

Kovalchuk retirement a little too convenient for all involved - The Hockey News- Ken Campbell does not like this. Easy to see why: It's pretty clear cap circumvention, even if Kovalchuk retired entirely because of his motivations.

NHL salary arbitration can occasionally damage relationships, can occasionally be hilarious | Backhand Shelf | Blogs | theScore.com- A look at arbitration.

Blue Jackets in no rush to sign Marian Gaborik | Puck Daddy - Yahoo! Sports- And I can get why.

Modernized version of ‘NHL 94′ to appear in upcoming ‘NHL 14′ video game | Puck Daddy - Yahoo! Sports- AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Respect
