With all the drama surround the Minnesota Wild in the last week, this story couldn't have come at a better time.
Some of you may remember last year when Bryan posted this story last May about a five year old named John "Mikko" Gegen was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, which is a form of cancer that forms in nerve cells. In order to give Mikko and his family something to look forward to during rounds of chemotherapy, Mini-sticks for Mikko was born.
Yesterday, Bryan got this tweet form the Mini-sticks for Mikko account.
This sweet, amazing, soon to be seven year old boy has now finished his treatment program, and all of his tests have come back normal. That means there is zero evidence of cancer cells remaining in his body!
The Gegen family sent this message through the Mini-sticks for Mikko website:
Dear Mini Sticks for Mikko & all the Magnificent Mikko Supporters,
What a difficult year it has been for Mikko and our family. Our little boy has battled what no person should ever have to face, but he’s made it…we’ve made it. I was reminded again tonight as I stumbled upon your cards, letters, and well-wishes from all over the United States and Canada, cheering Mikko on, lifting our family up in our darkest days…how truly blessed we are. Mini Sticks for Mikko and all of you have proven to us how truly kind and caring people are. People that don’t even know our little hockey fan, but are rooting him on anyways.
We can’t thank you enough for your support, letters, and the bunches and bunches of mini sticks you have sent Mikko’s way! Our entire hockey loving family has found joy in these mini sticks and they have put lots of smiles on our faces, along with a few chips in our coffee table.
We are ecstatic to report that Mikko’s scans at the end of May came back clear once again and he remains NED (No Evidence of Disease)! Early in June he had his hickman catheter removed from his chest as well as the feeding tube from his tummy. Mikko is officially footloose and fancy free! He has been swimming like crazy, tubing at the cabin; a ring bearer in a wedding and his Make A Wish trip to Hawaii is just a few weeks away. We are all loving this wonderful summer and making up for lost time.
Mikko will continue to have scans and bone marrow biopsies ever three months with his next one will be at the end of August. We don’t know what our future holds, but we do know that today is a gift….the answers to all of our prayers. We continue to take life one day at a time.
From the bottom of all of our hearts we thank you, thank you, thank you!
Jon, Shelly, Mikko, Michael & Jeffrey Gegen
Hockey Wilderness helped to round up some sticks to send, and I want to take the time to thank each and every one of you for sending things in to help the Gegen family, sending prayers and well-wishes, and being the amazingly supportive community that you are.
I am not a parent, and I cannot imagine how tough the last year was for this family. On behalf of the Hockey Wilderness community I would like to say WAY TO KICK CANCERS BUTT MIKKO!
