The quest for an emergency backup goaltender for the Minnesota Wild continues, as the Wild will host 11 goalies granted try-outs. The tryout will be held Thursday, November 18, with two finalists being chosen to compete during intermission at the Houston Aeros game at the X on Sunday.

This contest is, of course, to replace the irreplaceable Paul Deutsch, the emergency backup that was signed to a one day deal last season when there was question if Matt Hackett could make the game in time to be the backup for Josh Harding. Deutsch now counts as a "pro" and would need to clear waivers before the Wild could use him. That risk is not that the Wild would lose him, but rather the time needed to accomplish that process.

Thus, the contest.

For those paying attention, Hockey Wilderness has a bit of a vested interest in one of the contestants, as Defending the Blue Line Founder & President Shane Hudella competes for the honor. The rest of the list is below, in the press release. Anyone out there know the rest of the field?

Good luck to all, and especially to Shane.

The National Hockey League's (NHL) Minnesota Wild today announced Bud Light's Search for the Next Paul Deutsch, a contest to find the club's future emergency goalie, has selected 11 goaltenders to compete in an on-ice competition. The contest comes following the Wild's signing of Paul Deutsch, a beer-league goalie who served as Minnesota's emergency backup netminder in a game last season. Goalies from across the state have declared their case to become the Wild's next emergency goalie on, posting resumes of their hockey playing career supplemented with videos of their skills. Eleven netminders were selected and will take part in on-ice auditions before a panel of judges including Wild Goaltending Coach Bob Mason, Paul Deutsch, and Wild TV Analyst and former professional goalie Mike Greenlay on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 7-9 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center.

The 11 goalies selected to take part in the on-ice auditions for Bud Light's Search for the Next Paul Deutsch include:
  • Tyler Brigl - 27, Saint Paul
  • Kevin Donohue - 23, Minneapolis
  • Ryan Ess - 31, Minneapolis
  • Shane Hudella - 41, Hastings
  • Amy Jones - 29, Brooklyn Center
  • Treye Kettwick - 29, Minneapolis
  • Mark Klaers - 44, St. Louis Park
  • Mark Ostlund - 24, Saint Paul
  • Alan Strahota - 27, Burnsville
  • Joshua Swartout - 24, St. Louis Park
  • Adam Timperley - 30, Rogers
Two finalists will be invited to take part in a shootout against celebrity shooters during the second intermission of the Houston Aeros vs. Rockford IceHogs game at Xcel Energy Center on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. The goalie that does the best in the shootout will be named the Wild's next emergency goaltender, with the runner-up named next in line. The two finalists will receive an authentic Wild jersey with their name and number on the back and a Bud Light Prize Pack courtesy of Bud Light.
