For the second game in a row, the Wild seem to have forgotten to show up and play. There’s losing two in a row, and then there’s this; A straight up embarrassment.
The Wild held the momentum almost 100% for the first period. Big penalty kills, nice power plays, and most of the period was spent in the Detroit zone. No scoring, although there a few chances where the Wild could have gotten on board.
Second period got off to a rough start. Detroit scored two goals in rapid succession, one by Damien Brunner and the other by Todd Bertuzzi. The Wild kept their heads in the game, and managed to pull a 5 on 3 powerplay, which led to a beautiful little goal by Zach Parise. After Powe pulled a penalty, the Wild were able to pull it to even with a goal by Tom Gilbert right after the PP expired. Both the kids (Mikael Granlund and Jonas Brodin) pulled assists on it. Henrik Zutterburg scored for Detroit again when Harding stepped a bit too far out of his net and no one else was back to cover the net. Detroit scored again on a powerplay goal from Pavel Datsyuk, making the score 4-2. Momentum swung like a horrible pendulum all period.
Bertuzzi scored again about 5 minutes into the 3rd, making it 5-2. Parise somehow scored a goal off Zetterburgs butt just after the halfway point of the 3rd period. The game was all but done at that point though. The Wings played a rough game, and the Wild never really recovered. They got out shot, out hit, and seriously out played.
The most frustrating part of this game is the fact that the Wild have played better than this already in the short season. They DOMINATED Colorado. It just seems like the team can’t get it get together for the whole game. There are one or two periods of great play, and one period of "worse than the worst game last season" play.
Luckily, they are only 4 games into the season. There is still time to recover. But whatever the Wild have been doing is clearly not working. Change the lines, be strict about bedtimes, make the team practice harder…I’m not sure what the answer is, but something has to change quickly before the losing gets out of hand.
Brightsides of the night-
Suter/Gilbert actually looked good
Brodin didn’t look out of place
Onto the questions
- Is tonight the night Ryan Suter arrives? He got a point, I guess that counts
- Zach Parise needs to be on. Again. Is he? Yes. One of the only ones. 2 goals for him tonight
- Will the real Mikko Koivu please stand up? Nope, he sat back down
- Can Josh Harding continue his dominance of the Red Wings? HAHAHAHA
- So. Jonas Brodin, eh? Decent. Shitty game for him to start in.
