That was a bit of a bummer, huh?
It seems that all of the optimism the Wild blogosphere could muster couldn't will the Wild to end the Blackhawk's tie-aided point streak. And it wasn't even really all that close. The Wild trailed 4-1 at the conclusion of the first period, and trailed 28-10 in shots before the Wild scored two goals in the third. When the Wild made it a one-goal game, Patrick Kane went off like the Wild were a cab driver not even a minute later to put the game out of reach.
The 5-3 score was respectable, but when it mattered, the Wild were dominated to a degree not seen since the Hawks shipped Cam Barker to them.
So what does it mean?
Right now? Chicago just told us what we already knew: This team isn't ready to topple the elites in the league. Not consistently. Not on the road. Not yet.
For the bigger (i.e., playoff) picture, this loss allowed the Wild to be leapfrogged by San Jose, Los Angeles, and Detroit. With Phoenix getting a loser point last night, that bumps the Wild down to a tie for 9th. And the Wild are lucky LA scored late in the third, or the Blues would have gotten a loser point of their own, knocking them down to 10.
The Wild don't play until Saturday, so it can get worse. Nashville, Edmonton, and Calgary could all catch up with the Wild by then, just about everyone ahead of them in the standings has at least another game to add distance. Two points here, as in any game, would have been huge.
Also, the Wild don't play 'till Saturday. Blegh. A whole week without Game Day Editions? It's lean times for Tony Wiseau, childrens.
So with that, let's move on to some happier times! Hockey Wilderness has just recorded and released their first podcast, which you can listen to here.
