DAY 9 SELECTIONS

47TH OVERALL - The St. Louis Blues select Ryan Graves, defenseman from the Prince Edward Island Rocket of the QMJHL

General Manager mightymikeD:

But.. he’s not considered a 2nd Round pick!!". So say people who don’t understand how the Blues work. These are the same people who think it’s hilarious that Brian Elliot makes Elite-goalie money. Fools.

The First reason that Ryan Graves caught my eye was the fact that, although his Scouting Report on MyNHLDraft is completely blank , he already has a healthy profile on HockeyFights That’s the sort of Leadership that fits right in to the David Backes School Of Excellence
In addition, his name is very similar to another elite player on the Blues’ current roster and therefore, to make life easier for the mailman delivering the welfare checks, we’ve decided to bunk him in with Ryan Reaves. The two Ryans will share Reaves’ luxurious residence, currently located just behind the Purina Building (next to the dead hobo and the meth heads cooking a rat on a trash fire)

I smell a sitcom!!

The second reason is that, at 230 lb, graves is one of the heaviest players in the draft. Our elite prep-team believe that it will only take a few months of feeding him Turduckens, making him take long baths in tubs filled with onions and celery and regular rubdowns with BBQ marinade from our expert masseurs to get him to the stage where he’s ready to "Fill" a "Gap" in Ken Hitchcock’s stomach gameplan , no, actually, it is "Stomach". Ken Hitchcock drafts players so that he can eat them. It cuts down on the injury list for the established players when they don’t have to let him gnaw on their limbs during intermissions.

48TH OVERALL - The Detroit Red Wings select defenseman Dillon Heatherington from the WHL's Swift Current Buffalos.

HW Danccchan's Take:

Mobile and defensive, Heatherington is already a very good and quick defensive defenseman but also has the mobility and stick skills to develop his offensive game. Detroit is going to give him tons of development time to tap his offensive potential!

49TH OVERALL - The San Jose Sharks select William Carrier, left winger/center from the QMJHL's Cape Brenton Screaming Eagles.

General Manager J.A.Berty1330:

Carrier is a good-sized, good-skating, physical, power forward. He is good down low and has soft hands in front of the net. He got off to a hot start offensively, before slumping after his team lost their top scorer. Carrier then suffered an ankle injury and missed the rest of the season. Despite this, Carrier still finished 2nd on his team in scoring with 42 points in 34 games.

There is some concern that his offense was a result of Lavoie (Cape Breton’s leading scorer traded halfway through the season). However, even if his offense doesn’t pan out, his good-skating, physicality, and two-way play should seem him become a 3rd liner.

Carrier could be SJS’s replacement for Ryan Clowe. He projects as a 2nd/3rd line guy and is a safe bet to make the NHL given his size, skating, physicality, and defensive acumen even if his offense doesn’t develop.

50TH OVERALL - The San Jose Sharks select left/right-winger Arturri Lehkonen, from the SM-Liiga's KalPa Kuopo.

General Manager J.A.Berty1330:

Lehkonen was the 2nd leading scorer for KalPa at just 17 years old. Lehkonen is undersized, coming in at just 5’10" 150lbs. However, he is a great skater, with great top speed, acceleration, and agility. He pairs his great skating with a good shooting arsenal. He has a hard, accurate wrist shot with a ‘lightning quick’ release. He also has an excellent one timer. Finally, he has decent vision and is a good playmaker.

Unfortunately, Lehkonen did suffer 2 concussions this season. This is definitely a concern moving forward, especially for a small player like Lehkonen. If he can put the concussions behind him, his offensive potential is very high. Drafting Lehkonen is a risk, but both Pulock and Carrier both seem to be fairly safe bets to make the NHL.

51ST OVERALL - The Toronto Maple Leafs select defenseman Mitchell Wheaton from the WHL's Kelowna Rockets.

General Manager Corporal_Klinger:

This 6’-5", 228 lbs monster is a stay-at-home-type defensemen from the Kelowna Rockets Defence Works. He’s got a great reach to keep both shooting lanes and the crease clear, and with his size and strength he could be NHL ready sooner rather than later. (But we won’t rush him like we did with Luke Schenn. Honest.)
He has the potential to make a complimentary pairing with some of our more offensively-minded defence prospects like Jake Gardiner or Morgan Rielly, or as part of a shutdown pair with someone like Stuart Percy. Either way, this a pick we’re happy to make.

52ND OVERALL - The Buffalo Sabres select center Jimmy Lodge from the OHL's Saginaw Spirit.

HW Danccchan's Take:

Sabres seem to have a lot of picks in the early parts of the draft so they don’t mind using another pick on a high reward forward. Lodge started the season very slow and slightly disappointing but caught fire around the New Years and has been part of the hottest OHL lines.

53RD OVERALL - The Washington Capitals select left wing Anton Slepyshev from the KHL's Salavat Yulaev.

General Manager The Noogie:

"Slepyshev is one of the rare 17-year-old forwards who has been able to step into the KHL and produce, albeit at a marginal level. His production is along the lines of what elite prospects Evgeny Kuznetsov and Vladimir Tarasenko did in their 17-year-old seasons, though, for example. Slepyshev is an above-average skater who is tremendously agile and is also able to get up to a notable top gear. When you combine his great agility with the fact he has high-end puck skills, he really is a nuisance to check. Slepyshev is very effective at dodging opponents and creating space for himself. I’ve seen times on penalty kills where he would dance around the opposing zone for 15-25 seconds because several opponents keep missing him. Slepyshev has a plus if not near that shot and he knows it, as he has a shoot-first mentality with the ability to score from way out. He can still make plays and doesn’t have tunnel vision, but I wouldn’t classify him as a playmaker. Slepyshev’s physical game needs some work as while he’s average-sized, he’s got a bean pole frame and can easily be pushed off the puck. He will show some physical effort, although that at times could be better, and has some defensive value too, but his strength level is way behind where it needs to be."

"Slepyshev is already a very good skater, and with a bit of refined technique could become a great one. Slepyshev has very good top end speed, and quick acceleration despite a stride that is a little bit too short and choppy. A small bit of work would change Slepyshev from a very good skater to a great one. He already possesses the balance, agility and strength on his skates that is necessary to compete at the next level.

Slepyshev is a talented offensive player. He loves to shoot and has a very good array of shots. His wrist shot and snap shot both are hard, accurate, and feature a quick release. Slepyshev has very good hands, and is able to dangle around defencemen. He’s not afraid to drive the net and generated chances in close with his quick hands. He is a hard worker engaging in and winning numerous puck battles along the boards, and is willing to take abuse in front of the net. Slepyshev could however use some work on his playmaking."

54TH OVERALL - The Dallas Stars select defenseman Jan Kostalek from Rimouski of the QMJHL.

General Manager Mike Murphy "Dig Deep":

Kostalek is a right-handed blueliner that is considered to be a "safe" pick compared to some of the other blueliners still available and I think the Stars should play it safe when it comes to their blueline. Dallas should do their best to land a right-hander in the draft because their current blueline is full of lefties and a very old but still valuable right-hander in Stephane Robidas. Kostalek has 2nd PP unit potential because of his ability to move the puck but that isn’t his true strength and value. Jan Kostalek is celebrated as a guy who looks like he’s built to play tough minutes one day, he is excellent with his positioning, his physicality, and his stick. He might not be a big body (a 6’0" blueliner) but Kostalek has shown that he is calm and collected under pressure and makes good decisions with the puck.

So grab a beer and some steak sauce Mr. Kostalek, you are playing hockey in Texas now.
