Day 3 Recap

The NHL Entry Draft is starting to see some surprising picks.

New Jersey Devils went ahead and select Russian powerforward Valentin Zykov. He was only projected to be select a few picks later, the Devils love his the all-round package he brings to the ice: grit, shot and two-way play. There are questions about his ultimate offensive upside but it seems the Devils are fine knowing that he is a safe but gritty prospect.

The Bufalo Sabres, the first team to select a prospect with a second pick went for a high risk/high reward prospect in Anthony Mantha. With the selection of a safe but physical Nikita Zadorov, the team felt it had a strong enough forward depth (featuring Mikael Grigorenko, Johan Larsson, Zegmus Girgensons etc.) to gamble on a prospect that scored 50 goals in the QMJHL. Talented but he has questions on consistency and work ethic.

And possibly the biggest surprise so far is the Ottawa Senators selection in Shea Theodore. Theodore lacks muscle to play consistently well defensively, his offensive potential is off the charts. His passing accuarcy is breath-taking and the Senators could use another offensive prospect to partner up with Erik Karlsson.

But it did not stop there, one last pick of the day was by the Detroit Red Wings with another surprise pick. Jacob De La Rose a well-experienced junior player in Sweden, was selected by the Red Wings for his ability to wreck havok along the boards and on the forecheck.

DAY 3 SELECTIONS

13TH OVERALL - The Winnipeg Jets select dynamic undersized forward Max Domi

General Manager PimpinaintParise:

We will pick Max Domi, we feel like he is the best center right now on the board, and like his skating ability mixed with potential offensive explosion.

14TH OVERALL - The Columbus Blue Jackets select two-way Frederik Gauthier

General Manager Tony Wiseau:

I will continue to build the team in the direction that it’s been heading since the Rick Nash trade. It’s been getting tougher, grittier, and harder to play against.

Good for us, too. The move to the more finesse Eastern Conference allows us to zag where most other teams have zigged. We’re no longer trying to out-grit the stifling Western Conference, we’re out forging on the path cleared by Boston.

I’m going to double down on this team-building by selecting Frederik Gauthier from Rimouski. I feel his 6’4’’ frame and his ability to score and defend will pay dividends, and exemplify the kind of play I want to see from the Blue Jackets.

There are some flaws. The main one is that he’s still raw, but with three first round picks, I feel like I can afford to take a guy with upside, but with a higher possibility to progress slowly. He’s also, as you might guess from his size, not the fastest skater, but he’s been improving. The fact that he doesn’t use his size to it’s maximum potential is also something to be noted, but his recent massive growth spurt may be the culprit, perhaps he’s still learning to use it. But if you give me the opportunity to get a guy that big who can score, dish it, and play defense, then I’m going to take that guy. If there were no flaws to his game, I wouldn’t get him at 14.

15TH OVERALL - The New Jersey Devils select Russian powerforward Valetin Zykov.

With the #15 Pick, the New Jersey Devils are proud to select Right Wing Valentin Zykov from QMJHL’s Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

Valentin is going to be the guy that trys to replace Zach Parise in more then one way. The kid’s only weakness is his skating, both top end speed and acceleration. He has quick hands, strong balance, and a nose for the net and is not afraid getting dirty. When he was drafted for the Drakkars, he was not expected to be a goal scorer for them. But in fact, that’s exactly what he has done for them. Flying under the radar, Zykov has excelled on the smaller ice of North America, quietly playing in 63 games racking up 40 goals and 35 assists and a positive 29 rating.

Some fear that being Russian, he could jump back to the KHL at any point, but in fact this is unlikely, due to the success he has on smaller ice and his want to be in the NHL (Its the reason he came over to the QMJHL). He fills a deep need for pure right wings in the Devils prospect pool, something they only have one other player that fits that bill, and he is not projected to be a top 6 player.

16TH OVERALL - The Buffalo Sabres select goal-scoring winger Anthony Mantha

HW Danccchan's Take:

The Sabres are rich at the center position and with the addition of Zadorov earlier in the draft, their defense seems to be one of the best in the league.

So why not add another element to the equation? A big goal-scoring winger.

Mantha has the size and skills that teams drool over in terms of offensive wingers but he has some problems with consistency and defensive commitment. However, the Sabres are not afraid of prospects with a little risk after seeing how they select Mikael Grigorenko and Joel Armia the last two drafts.

Considering their depth throughout the entire team, they can risk the big gamble pick with their second pick in the draft.

17TH OVERALL - The Ottawa Senators select offensive defenseman Shea Theodore.

HW Danccchan's Take:

The team is full up on talent and depth so they select the BPA, defenseman Shea Theodore, who has arguably the best offensive upside from a defenseman in the entire draft.

Karlsson, Cowen, Wiercoch and Ceci represent the Senators future but could use an extra prospect with some top offensive ability. Theodore is that player, a defenseman that can make extremely accuracy passes and make them consistently. He is a player that can break the puck out, can make those breakaway passes, or simply skate the puck up himself.

18TH OVERALL - The Detroit Red Wings select physical forward Jacob De La Rose

General Manager Amerinadian:

De La Rose is a bigger forward with above-average puck possession skills and good offensive instincts. He’s also developing a strong two-way game, which fits in well with the Red Wings’ system. The Wings will allow him time to develop in the AHL before bringing him up to the NHL, so he will have time to fill out his frame and learn the North American game. He’s also Swedish, and the idea of playing for the team that starred Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg could be an additional motivating factor for the 18-year old.
