On the board: Kyle Nicolas. You have until 11:44AM CDT to make your pick!
Day 7 Recap
After yet another late start (sorry about that...), the 2nd round continues with impressive picks being made.
The second of the draft have been picked as the New Jersey Devils select Tristan Jarry of Edmonton Oil Kings. The second goalie picked in the draft, he has proved himself well as he got an impressive 1.61 GAA and a .936 save percentage in the 27 games he played.
Another stand-out pick came from the Dallas Stars as they select another powerful left winger, J.T. Compher. Despite his 5'11" stature, he plays like someone who is bigger than him with impressive strength and speed for someone of his size.
To close out the day, the Phoenix Coyotes selected a small, yet powerful center, Nicolas Petan. While he isn't a towering giant like many other prospects, the 'Yotes hope that his skills and strengths will bring good hockey back to the Arizona desert.
Day 8 begins with the Winnipeg Jets.
DAY 7 SELECTIONS
38TH OVERALL - The Buffalo Sabres select a powerful defenseman, Steven Santini.
HW WIMinnesotaWildFan's Take:
He was named best defenseman at this year’s IIHF U18 World Championship, and is very well rounded in his skill set. This 6’2 205 lb player is also an impressive skater, and really knows how to hit too.
39TH OVERALL - The New Jersey Devils select an impressive goaltender, Tristan Jarry.
General Manager goaliemon:
Why take a guy that is currently a back up goaltender? Well, hes behind another strong goaltender by the name of Laurent Brossoit who is a prospect for the Calgary Flames. He is still young and has yet to have a chance to prove himself to a heavy workload that a starting goalie would see. However, in limited starts over this past year, he as posted very impressive stat lines. 27 games played, 1.61 GAA and .936 Save percentage. How sheltered are his starts? A little bit, but he does have a playoff shut out from this year as well, so he has proven he can play against playoff teams. He also has a 16 save shut out bid in the CHL U17 Top Prospects game.
Jarry’s flaws are few, and infact there is nothing he can do about them until he becomes a starter and can prove he can handle the riggers of being a number one guy. He likes to play the puck, something that the Devils have grown accustom to over the last 21 years. He has strong side to side movement and is mentally tough, not letting weak goals get to him (Hes not Flurry). His rebound control is above average, which is why I decided to go with Tristan Jarry over other available goaltender prospects.
40TH OVERALL - The Dallas Stars select yet another forward, J.T Compher.
General Manager Mike Murphy "Dig Deep":
It came down to a choice of taking the best available player and of the names that were left on the board Lehkonen, Compher, and Petan stood out. I am going with Compher for Dallas because the USA development program has been outstanding as of late and Compher is touted by some to be the best of that crop available in this year’s draft (after Seth Jones played for USNTDP last year).
Compher is a high-energy player, he is a dogged forechecker, he isn’t afraid to take the body, and he has shown flashes of true offensive talent. He isn’t a big body but possesses great strength and speed for his frame and plays like he is a much bigger man than his 5’11" frame. Compher might be a little bit raw and there is no doubt that he is going to need to bulk up and add a lot of muscle to his frame to play his style at the professional level but I like his potential and I think his style of play is very welcome on a team that is embodied by Jamie Benn.
This makes three forwards in three picks for Dallas. DARING STRATEGY YOU SAY? Or perhaps I keep missing on d-men and am really hoping a desirable one falls to me at 54. It is true that Compher doesn’t have a cool or unique name (huge bummer) but he has a great smile… so there’s that.
Welcome to Texas JT. Grab a belt buckle, a revolver, and the nearest horse. It’s time for some Texas hockey.
41ST OVERALL - The Philadelphia Flyers select powerful left/right winger Edgars Klavins.
HW WIMinnesotaWildFan's Take:
Klavins is an extremely good puck handler, and despite his not so giant 6’3" stature, he is still a pretty good skater.
42ND OVERALL - The Phoenix Coyotes select small, but powerful center Nicolas Petan.
General Manager jerem77:
Although a bit small at 5-9 he’ll bring skill, skating and hockey sense to the desert.
