Good morning Wilderness! It's another beautiful day in the State of Hockey, and both teams that matter have been snakebit like the girl at the end of True Grit (SPOILER ALERT).
Minnesota United had a chance to take the lead in the 87th minute with a penalty kick by league-leading scorer Christian Ramirez. Ramirez shanked his shot wide, missing his first penalty kick of the season. The game would result in a 0-0 tie.
Similarly, the Minnesota Wild sat atop a 41-16 shot-on-goal differential at the end of the game, but only 1 of those shots found the goal behind Jonathan Quick.
There were a few plays of note, with Jason Zucker just missing getting his throat slashed by a skate- don't worry, he's fine. Zucker also had a nice shot off the goal-post, breaking hearts of Wild fans everywhere. The goal would have been his third of the season.
Partway through the game, Christian Folin laid a hit on Anze Kopitar.
Mike Richards took offense to the (very clean) hit, and tried to fight with Folin. Folin only threw one half-hearted punch, and settled for escorting Richards to the ice like the tiny little baby that he is. For this, Richards would be assessed an instigating minor, a fighting major, and a 10-minute misconduct for the instigating minor, and the Wild ended up on the powerplay.
Maybe the most poignant commentary on the sad affair can be found in the Jewels from the Crown Recap:
Feel however you want about this sequence of events, but it was of no consequence as the Kings' survived the ensuing power play.
Eventually, Matt Cooke would tally his first (beautifully backhanded) goal of the season, but it was not enough, and the Wild would lose 2-1 despite devastating dominance in the shot differential.
Despite my urge to add some Pearl Jam to the walk (as The Noogie went to the concert last night), I feel the following song is far more appropriate... so on to the walk!
