No Hedman, No Bishop, No Problem for the Wild

New, comments

The Minnesota Wild grounded the Lightning with a 7-2 win Saturday night at Xcel Energy Center.

Marilyn Indahl-USA TODAY Sports

You get a point! And you get a point! And you get a point! Everybody gets a point!

The Wild welcomed the newly, revamped Tampa Bay Lightning to the corner of 7th Street and Kellogg Avenue. After the first period, the Lightning may as well have been the last people trying to scalp a ticket because it looked as if they forgot there was a game.

The Lightning were coming in the second half of a back-to-back after beating Winnipeg 4-2 last night. That meant Evgeni Nabokov was going to spell normal starting goaltender Ben Bishop. They were also without top young defenseman Victor Hedman for the game, who has an injured hand and expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Not sure that would have mattered tonight.

Thirteen Wild players walked away with a point following a lopsided 7-2 victory at Xcel Energy Center. Marco Scandella, who had himself a fantastic evening, got the scoring going early in the first period by driving the net and squeaking one through Nabokov . He'd later add an assist and a fight to complete the Gordie Howe hat trick.

Thirty-nine seconds later, Wild captain Mikko Koivu got his first tally of the year. The Wild really ramped up the pressure on Nabokov  and Company in the first and would not relent.

Anton Stralman would break the shutout for Darcy Kuemper a few minutes later and that would be the closest the Lightning would come to evening the score.

Erik Haula scored his first of the year a minute and change after Stralman's goal to let the Lightning know that the Wild weren't going to be had that easy. Jason Zucker scored his first of the game to finish the scoring in an impressive scoring outburst that was the first stanza.

2:11 into the second period Zach Parise would get two cracks and on the second attempt would get one by Ben Bishop. Oh that's right, the Wild chased Nabakov in the first period, so the plan to rest Bishop was all for naught. Thomas Vanek would then set up an alley-oop pass to Jared Spurgeon for an easy slam dunk goal to get the score to six.

The Wild would eventually transition in to lock-down mode and held the Lightning to only 19 shots on goal for the game.

Nikita Kucherov would tip a puck past Kuemper. Kuemper let in two goals Saturday night, tying his season total entering the game.

Then in a late third period penalty kill, Marco Scandella cleared the puck past the Lightning defender and let Zucker go and get it. Zucker, who looked like he was shot out of a cannon, corralled the puck and lifted a back-hander for the 7th goal of the night.

One negative on such an offense-filled game; the power play got one opportunity and was unable to score and mustered only one shot. The power play is now 0-for-20 for the season. Mike Yeo didn't really want to talk about the power play's ineptitude in his post-game presser. The penalty kill was able to kill all four power plays that the Lightning had, including 26 seconds being down two men.

Zucker, playing the 4th line, leads the team with four goals. The Wild have out-scored their opponents 19-6 through 6 games. The Wild penalty kill now has more goals than the Wild power play.

On Tap

The Wild will now head the Madison Square Garden to take on last season's Prince of Wales trophy winner New York Rangers on Monday. The Rangers are 4-4 with 8 points and are in 7th place of the Metropolitan Division.
