Wilderness Walk: Matt Moulson Edition

The Wild, despite my prediction that it would be otherwise, swung a big Trade Deadline deal.

Again, a lot to get to, what with that whole "Trade Deadline" thing, so let's get going!

Wild News

Wild adds goals and grit in trade for Buffalo's Moulson | Star Tribune- And you know what? As much as Chuck Fletcher didn't want to get a rental, this wasn't a bad deal. In fact, from what I could tell, it was really a Buyer's market out there, as you'll be able to deduce by looking at the trade deadline deals to follow. All Matt Moulson does is score goals. Greasy ones. And on the power play, too. You may be able to correctly identify that these precise skills are ones that the Minnesota Wild tend to struggle with.

A deeper look into today's Matt Moulson/Cody McCormick acquisitions | Russo's Rants | This comes at you from all angles. Interestingly enough, the Wild acquired Moulson because he was one of the only people that didn't come at the price of a Wild prospect. Those targeted were Mathew Dumba, Kurtis Gabriel, and Gustav Olofsson. For those of you calling Gabriel a bust, and wondering who the hell Olofsson was, SUCK ON THAT!

But really, Russo, you think Nino Niederreiter may end up on the fourth line? Really? They better think on that if they're seriously considering that. Or maybe see if the Wild can trade Dany Heatley to the KHL.

Wild GM sends his team a message: 'We want to win right now' - This was a rental, so definitely a move for the short term. For two second-rounders, particularly one from a draft that's supposed to be as weak as this next one apparently is, it's not a price too high. Perhaps the Wild will revisit him down the road, but with 20 games left (and possibly playoffs), the focus will be on the here-and-now with this trade.

Wild return to last year’s well, acquire Matt Moulson from the Sabres | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports- Buffalo and Minnesota teamed up last season to make the Jason Pominville deal happen. Pominville helped drag Minnesota to the playoffs before getting annihilated by Dustin Brown's elbow. The Wild face the LA Kings on March 31, so we should probably put him on the bench that night.

Minnesota Wild Acquires Matt Moulson From Sabres- Only two players on the Wild have had more 30 goal seasons than Matt Moulson. And one of them was Dany Heatley, so it's really like only one other player. He will probably help the Wild a lot.

Minnesota Wild beat deadline buzzer, trade for Matt Moulson and Cody McCormick | March | 2014 Articles- Let's not forget Cody McCormick, who will add grit to the lineup, and hopefully work out better than the last 2,000 bottom-line players Fletcher has brought in to add grit to the lineup (with the exception of Matt Cooke).

The Team of 18,001: Wild Acquire Moulson, McCormick- While playing on a terrible Buffalo team, Moulson's stats compare favorably with the Wild leaders. His 17 goals and 28 points would be 3rd on the Wild, behind Zach Parise and Jason Pominville. Only Zach Parise exceeds Moulson's 8 PPGs, and his 16 PPPs would be tied with Parise. And, again, only Parise and Pominville exceeded Moulson's 133 shots.

And the Wild will have ample time to practice with Moulson before putting him out there in game situations, as the Wild don't play until Saturday. Let's see what he can do here!

Off the Trail

Thomas Vanek to Montreal, as Canadiens shock NHL deadline day | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports- The big news of the day, if only because Vanek netting such a small return (no knock on Collberg) was incredibly surprising. Not giving up a prospect was a big goal for Fletcher, but Vanek came very cheap. There's been questions about Vanek's motivation level, so I can see how the Wild may have preferred Moulson, anyway. What a disaster of a season for the New York Islanders.

Marty St. Louis traded to NY Rangers for Ryan Callahan, picks in blockbuster | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports- Martin St. Louis sent a letter to Tampa Bay fans, apologizing for no specific reason (in particular, but one must assume taking his ball and going home over being snubbed from Team Canada, but only initially, by his GM was what he was apologizing for).

Marian Gaborik traded to LA Kings; can he recapture his game? | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports- Maybe if his groin doesn't explode.

Jaroslav Halak era in Buffalo ends, as Sabres ship goalie to Capitals | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports- Sources say Halak will have his number retired in Buffalo.

Tim Thomas dealt to Stars as dream tandem with Luongo dies | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports- Florida decided to only pump Roberto Luongo's tires.

Ales Hemsky scores twice vs. Senators, gets traded to them a day later | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports- Hemsky has had some good seasons in the NHL. Perhaps a change of scenery will help?

NHL -- Scott Burnside: Trade deadline winners and losers - ESPN- See who other than the Islanders lost!

No deal: Kesler not traded | ProHockeyTalk- The big piece of the deadline that went unmoved was Ryan Kesler, who despite making Team USA, still wanted to be traded. I would have liked to see him in a Wild uniform, but alas, the price was too much. Though it doesn't seem the Wild were in on him.

Canucks GM Gillis: ‘We entertained multiple offers but none fit our expectations’ | ProHockeyTalk- When your best trade offer features Brandon Sutter, I can see why they wouldn't be crazy about it. Kesler has two years left on his deal at a very reasonable 5 million dollars, so they don't have to sell low on Kesler.

Ducks GM is confused about not landing a big player like Kesler | ProHockeyTalk- The Ducks sent Dustin Penner out of town, but couldn't get anything done. They had a deal for Kesler on the table that allegedly had 2 1sts and 2 2nds heading to Vancouver.

Steven Stamkos cleared to play Thursday vs. Sabres | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports- So, that's good news for Tampa Bay, after trading their best player in franchise history. (And yeah, I know they got Ryan Callahan, who is pretty awesome, but still).
