Wilderness Walk: Afterburner Edition

New, comments

The Wild take 2 points but allow a loser point to the Flames. Now 1 down from San Jose and LA. 2 down from Vancouver, 3 from Calgary, 5 from Winnipeg. 25 games to go.

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The Wild team that took the ice in the first period last night, shutting down gaps, making crisp passes, and ultimately scoring 2 goals was not the same team that sleepwalked through the final 2 periods.  The Wild were again outshot, and faded quickly after having a lot of jump in the opening stanza.

But the team found a way to win, and that is a strong characteristic of a playoff team.  KapFinn Koivu iced the game with a sweet shot from the left side that fooled Jonas Hiller. The Wild must continue their quest to reassert their game across an entire 60 minutes.  Devan Dubnyk was terrific, and did what Minnesota fans have come to expect of him since he arrived.  He gave the Wild a chance to win.

The Wild's biggest loss of the night was not surrendering the loser point, but Jared Spurgeon going down with an upper body injury in the first period after only 1:26 on the ice.  The rest of the D corps had to put in a lot of minutes, and Matt Dumba played a great game with a goal and a couple of crucial blocks on the back end.  Expect Christian Folin to be recalled if Spurgeon isn't ready to go by tomorrow.
