Stifled all night by the Oilers suffocating shot blocking and their own inability to shoot the puck, the Wild dropped a game to an inferior opponent and missed an opportunity to continue their torrid climb up the standings. While it is only one loss and there are plenty of games to play, the Wild still need to grab what will be a likely minimum of 25 points out of their remaining 22 games (69 points currently, 94 estimated to make playoffs) of which include 2 against the Predators and Blues, and singles versus the playoff bound Ducks, Blackhawks, Rangers, Islanders, and Red Wings. The road forward is not easy. The Wild also only have 1 game each left against the Jets, Kings and Flames - the teams tangled with them in the standings.
Coming to help is new Finnesotan Sean Bergenheim. Check out Tony's Write-Up on the newly acquired forward. GM Chuck Fletcher still has some cap space left should he want to pursue a defenseman before the trade deadline on March 2. It will be interesting to see how the roster shakes out over the next few weeks with the addition of Bergenheim, the potential addition of a depth defenseman, and the returns of Jared Spurgeon, Ryan Carter and Matt Cooke looming. Stephane Veilleux is likely headed back to Iowa, at least for now, as rosters expand following the deadline and the Wild can carry as many players as they like, so look for Jordan Schroeder to stick for the rest of the season.
All in all, this was only one game, and there is plenty of opportunity for the Wild to take care of business. But it's sure easier to take to points from a team like Edmonton than it is to from a team like Nashville, and the Wild get to see that firsthand in Nashville on Thursday.
